Translation as a measure of literary domination: the case of Quebec literature translated in Spain (1975-2004)

2010

Recent literary manifestos claim that “the center is no longer the center” (Le Devoir 2007). Indeed, it is generally admitted that Quebec literature has been more or less independent from the French field since the 1970’s. However, the analysis of the translation of this literature –its international circulation, and the almost compulsory stopover in France before being selected for translation by the agents of other literary fields– reveals various mechanisms through which the French symbolic center still exerts its power. Drawing on the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture to the international space (Casanova 1999; Sapiro 2007, 2008; etc.), this article argues that transl…

Factorization of strongly (p,sigma)-continuous multilinear operators

2013

We introduce the new ideal of strongly-continuous linear operators in order to study the adjoints of the -absolutely continuous linear operators. Starting from this ideal we build a new multi-ideal by using the composition method. We prove the corresponding Pietsch domination theorem and we present a representation of this multi-ideal by a tensor norm. A factorization theorem characterizing the corresponding multi-ideal - which is also new for the linear case - is given. When applied to the case of the Cohen strongly -summing operators, this result gives also a new factorization theorem.

2011

When in March 1938, the Francoist troops entered the Catalan territory, one of Franco’s priorities, was the abrogation of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia through a law passed on 5th April 1938. Catalonia then experienced one of the most tragic periods of its history; in the first years, the regime displayed a very severe anti-Catalan policy. The Francoist retaliates were massive and systematic. In line with the executions and the imprisonments, a wide cultural repression also started. The main objective was wiping out the Catalan identity, attacking the language and the different expressions of culture. An important set of laws and regulations are in the origin of what historians quali…

Liberalism, how many divisions?

2022

Liberalism is a very broad political family which, if taken in the broadest sense, brings together authors with diverse positions whose only common point is their attachment to freedom. Therefore, to find one’s way around in this political family, it is essential to establish classification criteria. There are many possibilities: Liberals can be classified by nationality, by period, by preferred field of interest (economic liberalism, political liberalism), etc. This article proposes to classify them following two criteria, the conception of freedom on the one hand, and the utilitarian or jusnaturalist basis of the attachment to freedom on the other. These two criteria generate an operation…

2015

This text provides on reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 women of South Italy. The research aimed discussing the role of medicine as a social practice that imposes the domination of traditional representations in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus and breast). It is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib. The survey describes how language of medicine and power of male representations performs the sub…

2017

The consideration of the friendship crisis occurring between adult men is based on two contemporary French plays: Pour un oui ou pour un non by Nathalie Sarraute (1982) and Art by Yasmina Reza (1994). In both cases, the reason for breaking off the friendly relation was a spontaneous reaction of one friend who judged, hurt and humiliated the other. This proved the first persons will to dominate the other and to subordinate him. All attempts of negotiation failed. The two plays’ texts have been com pared with the ideas of sociologists and philosophers describing hum an relations in the contemporary world, such as Zygmunt Bauman, Edgar Morin and Pierre Bourdieu.
