Third-stage larvae of the Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex (also known as sealworms) have been reported in at least 40 marine fish species belonging to 21 families and 10 orders along the South American coast. Sealworms are a cause for concern because they can infect humans who consume raw or undercooked fish. However, despite their economic and zoonotic importance, morphological and molecular characterization of species of Pseudoterranova in South America is still scarce. Effect of potential antidotes on the acute toxicity of acrylonitrile

Rats were intoxicated with lethal doses of acrylonitrile by different routes of application, and the effect of potential antidotes was studied. The cyanide antidotes 4-dimethylaminophenol plus thiosulfate showed some protective effect only after oral but not after i.p. or inhalatory acrylonitrile application. Of the sulfhydryl compounds cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, cysteamine and diethyldithiocarbamate the two antidotes cysteine and, to some lesser extent, N-acetylcysteine proved especially effective. Cysteine, at a dose of 200 mg/kg (i.p.), prevented the lethal effect of 100 mg/kg acrylonitrile (i.p.) even when given 2 h after the acrylonitrile dose. From these experiments a tentative sched…

En esta Tesis Doctoral se ha caracterizado el mecanismo de acción de hidrolizados y péptidos antihipertensivos derivados de la proteína láctea lactoferrina bovina (LF). En concreto, se ha determinado su efecto sobre los principales componentes del sistema renina-angiotensina (RAS) y del sistema endotelina. Para ello, se han utilizado diferentes aproximaciones experimentales que incluyen en primer lugar ensayos in vitro para determinar los efectos inhibitorios sobre la actividad de la enzima conversora de angiotensina (ECA) y sobre la enzima conversora de endotelina (ECE).
