A quantitative study of the pancuronium antagonism at the motor endplate in human organophosphorus intoxication

1995

Nine patients with organophosphorus (OP) intoxication developing neuromuscular transmission defects were given pancuronium 1, 2, or 4 mg intravenously (IV). Thirteen patient controls with hypoxic encephalopathy received similar dosages. The responses were monitored electrophysiologically using single and repetitive nerve stimulation (20 and 50 Hz). In OP patients, pancuronium did not alter the amplitude of the single CMAP, whereas its repetitive discharges were reduced. Severe neuromuscular blocks were reversed only partially by pancuronium 4 mg. In less severe blocks, 1 and 2 mg resulted in marked improvement. In the patient controls, pancuronium 4 mg induced a severe neuromuscular block b…

Effects of hypocaloric very-low-carbohydrate diet vs. Mediterranean diet on endothelial function in obese women

2009

Obesity is a cardiovascular risk factor associated with endothelial dysfunction, but the effect of different weight loss strategies on endothelial function is not known. The effect of diet on endothelial function in two hypocaloric diets, a very-low-carbohydrate diet (A) and a Mediterranean diet (M), was measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Design Using a longitudinal, randomized, open study design, subjects were engaged in a 2-month weight loss diet. FMD, inflammatory cytokines [interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha] and a marker of oxidative stress [8-iso-prostaglandin F2alpha (8-iso-PGF2alpha)] were measured in subjects on three occasions: before init…

Pedotechnique applications in large-scale farming: Economic value, soil ecosystems services and soil security

2019

Abstract Since ancient times Humans and Soil have experienced interwoven links. Nowadays soil scientists continue to stress such links highlighting the importance of soil in: i) satisfying the ever growing Human demand for food, water and energy, and ii) providing ecosystem services that mitigate climate changes, influence human health and improve biodiversity. Pedotechniques are recently used to generate soils suitable for table grape cultivation in order to increase productivity and grape quality, thus to get substantial financial returns. We show one emblematic study case of pedotechniques applied in Sicily (Italy). Aims of the investigation were: i) stressing threats to soil security de…

Synthesis, biological evaluation, and molecular docking studies of aldotetronic acid-based LpxC inhibitors

2022

: In order to develop novel inhibitors of the bacterial deacetylase LpxC bearing a substituent to target the UDP binding site of the enzyme, a series of aldotetronic acid-based hydroxamic acids was accessed in chiral pool syntheses starting from 4,6-O-benzylidene-d-glucose and l-arabinitol. The synthesized hydroxamic acids were tested for LpxC inhibitory activity in vitro, revealing benzyl ether 17a ((2S,3S)-4-(benzyloxy)-N,3-dihydroxy-2-[(4-{[4-(morpholinomethyl)phenyl]ethynyl}benzyl)oxy]butanamide) as the most potent LpxC inhibitor. This compound was additionally tested for antibacterial activity against a panel of clinically relevant Gram-negative bacteria, bacterial uptake, and suscepti…

METAMORPHIC EVOLUTION OF SPESSARTINE QUARTZITES (COTICULES) IN THE HIGH-PRESSURE, LOW-TEMPERATURE COMPLEX AT BAHIA MANSA, COASTAL CORDILLERA OF SOUTH…

2001

Lenses of spessartine quartzites (coticules) are associated with greenschist intercalations in coastal exposures at Bahia Mansa within the mainly metapsammopelitic Western Series, which forms most of the basement in the Coastal Cordillera of central to southern Chile. The chemical compositions of the coticules can be explained by protoliths formed from ferriferous and manganiferous hydrothermal precipitates mixed with aluminous alteration-derived material on top of oceanic crust. The peak conditions of metamorphism were calculated with multivariant reactions: 270–370 °C, 6–8 kbar. A retrograde P–T evolution was marked by decompression to 2 kbar during cooling below 300°C, influx of an exter…

The fine structural organization of sternal glands of pseudergates and workers in termites (Isoptera): a comparative survey

2008

1873-5495 (Electronic) Comparative Study Journal Article; Thirty-nine species belonging to different families of termites are studied to give a comprehensive view of the evolution of the sternal glands. Several modifications occurring at cuticular and cytological levels are described in neuter castes. The outer epicuticle is always pierced by epicuticular pores. In advanced termites the epicuticular filaments greatly increase in number and length creating a thick layer. The pore canals gradually enlarge while the cuticle changes into a lattice structure lining an extracellular space in which the secretion is stored. Two classes of cells are present in basal termites (Mastotermitidae, Hodote…

Responses of microbial activity and decomposer organisms to contamination in microcosms containing coniferous forest soil.

2002

Soil respiration from microcosms contaminated with pentachlorophenol, 2-ethanolhexanoate, creosote, CuSO4, and benomyl was measured in order to evaluate usefulness of soil microcosms and microbial respiration rate monitoring as a toxicity test in soils with high organic matter content. Coniferous forest soil and its organisms were used as test objects. In addition, how a short-term low temperature period including frost affects respiration dynamics in stressed soils was studied, i.e., whether contaminants reduce resistance of the community to other (also natural) stresses. In addition, at the end of the experiment, effects of contaminants on faunal and microbial community structures were an…
