Effect of wavelength dependence of nonlinearity, gain, and dispersion in photonic crystal fiber amplifiers

2005

Photonic crystal fibers are used in fiber amplifiers and lasers because of the flexibility in the design of mode area and dispersion. However, these quantities depend strongly on the wavelength. The wavelength dependence of gain, nonlinearity and dispersion are investigated here by including the wavelength dependence explicitly in the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for photonic crystal fibers with varying periods and hole sizes. The effect of the wavelength dependence of each parameter is studied separately as well as combined. The wavelength dependence of the parameters is shown to create asymmetry to the spectrum and chirp, but to have a moderating effect on pulse broadening. The effect…

Chromatic Dispersion Control in Mode-Locked Yb-Doped Fiber Lasers Based on a Microstructured Optical Fiber

2013

We present an experimental study on the use of solid core microstructured optical fibers (MOF) for managing the chromatic dispersion in an Yb-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked by a saturable absorber. The performance of the laser, in terms of pulse width and repetition rate, was investigated as a function of the net cavity dispersion.

Observation of induced modulational polarization instabilities and pulse-train generation in the normal-dispersion regime of a birefringent optical f…

1998

Four-photon mixing in a low-birefringence fiber is strongly influenced by the orientation of the pump and signal waves with respect to the fiber axes. We experimentally investigated the dependence of the modulational gain spectra on pump power and polarization by mixing orthogonal pump and probe light beams in a birefringent optical fiber. With a pump on the fast fiber axis, a cascade of sidebands was generated in the regime of normal fiber dispersion. These sidebands are shown to correspond to 0.2–0.3-THz trains of pulses with complex polarization profiles. The analysis reveals that, at particular values of the input pump and probe powers and signal frequency detuning, trains of dark-solit…

Extreme statistics in Raman fiber amplifiers : influence of pump depletion and dispersion

2010

OSA 2010 NonLinear Photonics Best Student Poster Award; International audience; We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of pump depletion effects on extreme statistics observed in fiber Raman amplifiers. We also report on the impact of the dispersion of the fiber.

High Order Harmonic Passive Mode-Locking In Double-Clad Fiber Laser

2009

We report passive mode-locking of a soliton erbium-doped double-clad fiber laser operating at the 322nd harmonic of the fundamental cavity frequency. Repetition rates scalable up to 3 GHz have been obtained with a pulse duration of about 1 ps and a pulse energy of about 18 pJ. The supermode suppression at the 322nd harmonic is better than 25 dB. The dynamics of emergence of this operating regime is also presented revealing a very long timescale.
