The Export Strategy and SMEs Employment Resilience During Slump Periods
2021
Abstract The Spanish economy was the most hit by the Great Recession. It suffered a greater decrease in the gross domestic product (GDP) (affecting especially internal demand). However, it suffered a greater increase in exports (the so-called Spanish “miracle”). Particularly, Spanish SMEs incorporation into exports has been spectacular since 2008. Further, this has coincided with a huge increase in unemployment. Therefore, our main objective is to investigate the moderating role of exports in job destruction associated with recessive contexts of domestic demand using Spanish manufacturing SMEs as a case study. We obtain for SMEs that export participation helps compensate for the decrease in…
Fish introductions and light modulate food web fluxes in tropical streams : a whole-ecosystem experimental approach
2016
Decades of ecological study have demonstrated the importance of top-down and bottom-up controls on food webs, yet few studies within this context have quantified the magnitude of energy and material fluxes at the whole-ecosystem scale. We examined top-down and bottom-up effects on food web fluxes using a field experiment that manipulated the presence of a consumer, the Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata, and the production of basal resources by thinning the riparian forest canopy to increase incident light. To gauge the effects of these reach-scale manipulations on food web fluxes, we used a nitrogen (15N) stable isotope tracer to compare basal resource treatments (thinned canopy vs. con…
Camouflage accuracy in Sahara-Sahel desert rodents
2020
1.Camouflage helps animals to hide from predators and is therefore key to survival. Although widespread convergence of animal phenotypes to their natural environment is well established, there is a lack of knowledge about how species compromise camouflage accuracy across different background types in their habitat. 2.Here we tested how background matching has responded to top‐down selection by avian and mammalian predators using Sahara‐Sahel desert rodents in North Africa. 3.We show that the fur coloration of several species has become an accurate match to different types of desert habitats. This is supported by a correlation analysis of colour and pattern metrics, investigation of animal‐t…
Basic assumptions for introducing circular solutions in the buildings sector
2016
An Approach for Network Outage Detection from Drive-Testing Databases
2012
A data-mining framework for analyzing a cellular network drive testing database is described in this paper. The presented method is designed to detect sleeping base stations, network outage, and change of the dominance areas in a cognitive and self-organizing manner. The essence of the method is to find similarities between periodical network measurements and previously known outage data. For this purpose, diffusion maps dimensionality reduction and nearest neighbor data classification methods are utilized. The method is cognitive because it requires training data for the outage detection. In addition, the method is autonomous because it uses minimization of drive testing (MDT) functionalit…
Musiikkiterapia 4-vuotiaan lapsen aloitteellisuuden ja omatoimisuuden tukemisessa : Downin oireyhtymään liittyvien erityispiirteiden tarkastelu tapau…
2014
Suomessa syntyy vuosittain vajaa sata lasta, joilla todetaan Downin oireyhtymä. Jokai- nen lapsi, jolla on Downin oireyhtymä, kehittyy yksilöllisesti, vahvuuksineen ja haas- teineen. Downin oireyhtymään liittyy kuitenkin joitakin erityispiirteitä, jotka vaikuttavat lapsen kokonaiskehitykseen. Lasten, joilla on Downin oireyhtymä, kielellinen ja motorinen kehitys viivästyvät tavanomaisesti kehittyviin lapsiin verrattuna, mitkä seikat vaikuttavat omatoimisuuden ja aloitteellisuuden kehittymiseen. Kielenkehityksen viivettä aiheuttavat muun muassa auditiivisen prosessoinnin vaikeu- det. Varhaiskuntoutukseen kuuluu yleisesti puheterapia ja tukiviittomien opetus, jolla pyritään tukemaan lapsen ja …
Explaining classroom teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education
2019
Teacher attitudes have been identified as an important resource when striving towards inclusive education as defined in the Salamanca Statement (1994). This study surveyed some key factors associated with teacher attitudes towards inclusion. The participants were 1,456 classroom teachers in Finnish primary schools who were asked about their readiness to include in their classrooms a student with a specified special educational need (SEN). The results were reviewed in association with some background variables, including workload concerns, evaluation of professional skills and the opportunity to get extra support if needed. The results show that classroom teachers’ positive attitudes towards…
Utterance fluency in Finnish Sign Language L1 and L2 signing
2021
This paper explores the fluency of first language (L1) and second language (L2) signers of Finnish Sign Language. The phenomenon was approached by measuring utterance fluency using speed and breakdown parameters. The findings revealed clear differences between L1 and L2 signers regarding the measured fluency parameters. On average, L1 signers produced more signs and had fewer breakdowns per minute than L2 signers. However, the slowest L1 signer and the fastest L2 signer were more similar to each other than the averages of the L1 group’s (129.3) and the L2 group’s (71.4) signs per minute might suggest. The number of breakdowns per minute differed between the groups, with L2 signers breaking …
Using Temporal Expectation to Assess Auditory Streaming in Mice
2018
Auditory streaming is the process by which environmental sound is segregated into discrete perceptual objects. The auditory system has a remarkable capability in this regard as revealed in psychophysical experiments in humans and other primates. However, little is known about the underlying neuronal mechanisms, in part because of the lack of suitable behavioural paradigms in non-primate species. The mouse is an increasingly popular model for studying the neural mechanisms of perception and action because of the range of molecular tools enabling precise manipulation of neural circuitry. Here we present a novel behavioural task that can be used to assess perceptual aspects of auditory streami…
