Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products

2021

Abstract Spatial downscaling has recently become a crucial process in the regional application of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. Extensive gaps in auxiliary optical/thermal infrared observation data (mainly caused by cloud cover) and gaps in coarse-resolution passive microwave SSM data lead to spatiotemporal discontinuity in downscaled SSM maps, thereby limiting their applications. An improved downscaling method for the 25-km European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) SSM product was proposed to obtain daily seamless downscaled SSM series at a 1-km scale. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daily land su…

The transient gravitational-wave sky

2013

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

Una tipología de desajustes entre competencias y educación utilizando un análisis comparativo entre países

2015

This paper aims to discuss the value of the diplomas and the situation of downgrading on the labour market. Its novelty is to compare skills both acquired and required in employment, using a self - assessment carried out by young higher education graduates a cross nine countries of Europe, Japan and Canada. More precisely, we illustrate the incidences of diploma and skill mismatches using three higher education graduate surveys, two international surveys (CHEERS, REFLEX) and a Canadian survey (NGS). We define possible over - education and skill mismatches and then present an empirical typology to show the most frequent cases of mismatches. The ideal situation which corresponds to a perfect …

A more efficient match between firms’ demand, VET supply and human capital capacities through bottom-up, participative governance

2013

Abstract One of the main challenges facing EU territories is the development of strategies to better adapt to changing global socio-economic trends. Lifelong education and training is a main strategic tool and a key component in the achievement of EU goals. One component of the lifelong education concept is Vocational Education and Training (VET), aimed at closing the gap between workers’ skills and qualification and changing demand in labour markets. Although local partnerships seem to be an adequate tool to implement VET strategies, some authors identify obstacles that can be attributed to bad practices. Thus, more evidence is needed to support the idea that local development and public-p…

Physical activity using social media during the COVID-19 pandemic: the perceptions of sports science students

2021

Abstract During the period of the COVID-19 lockdown, sports organizations and companies had to look for new ways to connect with their customers by offering physical activity (PA) alternatives to do at home. This study explores the perceptions of 175 undergraduate sports science students regarding their social media (SM) and PA patterns during the first Spanish COVID-19 lockdown period (March to May 2020). From their homes, the students completed an ad hoc online questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 software to perform descriptive and inferential analysis (t-test). The results show that the participants used SM during the COVID-19 lockdown to visualize or practice PA, percei…

Crisis, convivencia multicultural y "efectos de barrio". El caso de dos barrios de Valencia

2015

Variational methods for the steady state response of elastic–plastic solids subjected to cyclic loads

2003

Abstract Solids (or structures) of elastic–plastic internal variable material models and subjected to cyclic loads are considered. A minimum net resistant power theorem, direct consequence of the classical maximum intrinsic dissipation theorem of plasticity theory, is envisioned which describes the material behavior by determining the plastic flow mechanism (if any) corresponding to a given stress/hardening state. A maximum principle is provided which characterizes the optimal initial stress/hardening state of a cyclically loaded structure as the one such that the plastic strain and kinematic internal variable increments produced over a cycle are kinematically admissible. A steady cycle min…

Loss of Neuroglobin Expression Alters Cdkn1a/Cdk6-Expression Resulting in Increased Proliferation of Neural Stem Cells

2018

Abstract: In the quest to unravel its functional significance, neuroglobin (Ngb), a brain-specific neuroprotective protein, has recently been proposed as an actor in neurodevelopment. As neural stem cells (NSCs) are fundamental during brain development, the present study aimed at investigating the role of Ngb in the growth and proliferation of NSCs by comparing an Ngb-floxed (Ngb(fl)-)NSC line, equivalent to the wild-type cellular situation, with an in-house created Ngb knockout (Ngb(KO)-)NSC line. Ngb(KO)-NSCs were characterized by an increased growth and proliferation capacity in vitro, supported by RNA sequencing and western blot results reporting the downregulation of Cdkn1a and the upr…

Multiple modes of cell death in neuroendocrine tumors induced by artesunate.

2020

Abstract Background The paucity of effective treatment in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) encouraged us to investigate the therapeutic value of artesunate (ART) promised by its inhibitory effect against various tumors and broad safety profile. Methods We evaluated the impact of ART on three NET cell lines, BON-1, QGP-1 and NCI-H727 on cellular and molecular levels. Results Our results showed that ART induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through phosphorylation of eIF2α, which further gave rise to autophagy in all three NET cell lines. Specifically, apoptosis and ferroptosis were also observed in BON-1 cells, which made BON-1 cell line more vulnerable upon ART treatment. The different sens…

ER stress in human hepatic cells treated with Efavirenz: Mitochondria again

2013

Background & Aims ER stress is associated with a growing number of liver diseases, including drug-induced hepatotoxicity. The non-nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor Efavirenz, a cornerstone of the multidrug strategy employed to treat HIV1 infection, has been related to the development of various adverse events, including metabolic disturbances and hepatic toxicity, the mechanisms of which remain elusive. Recent evidence has pinpointed a specific mitochondrial effect of Efavirenz in human hepatic cells. This study assesses the induction of ER stress by Efavirenz in the same model and the implication of mitochondria in this process. Methods Primary human hepatocytes and Hep3B…
