Studying The Hydrological Response Of Urban Catchments Using A Semi-Distributed Linear Non-Linear Model

2000

A conceptual rainfall-runoff model for urban catchment, which incorporates, semi-distributed modelling concepts has been developed. In the proposed model, the catchment is divided in external sub-catchments connected to the drainage network. Each external sub-catchment is modelled as two separate conceptual linear elements, a reservoir and a channel, one for the pervious part, the other for the impervious part of the drainage area. The drainage network is schematised as a cascade of non-linear cells and the flood routing is simplified in the form of kinematic wave and represented as a flux transfer between adjacent cells. Tests carried out using data from the Parco d'Orleans experimental ca…

High-skilled migration and the knowledge society. Theories, processes, perspectives

2018

The recent economic crisis has led to an upswing in migration from the Mediterranean countries of Europe towards its central and northern development hubs. This overall increase in migration also includes high numbers of the so-called skilled migrants, consisting mainly, though not exclusively, of young people moving within Europe for study or specialisation, or seeking employment that matches their skills profile. It is no coincidence then that this new trend for skilled migration within Europe forms the main thrust of the cognitive and research interests of sociologists, economists and migration geographers. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the theoretical debate on skilled migrati…

Effects of agricultural drainage systems on sediment connectivity in a small Mediterranean lowland catchment

2018

Traditional drainage systems combining man-made channels and subsurface tile drains have been used since Roman times to control water excess in Mediterranean lowland regions, favouring adequate soil water regime for agriculture purposes. However, mechanization of agriculture, abandonment or land use changes lead to a progressive deterioration of these drains in the last decades. The effects of these structures on hydrological and sediment dynamics have been previously analyzed in a small Mediterranean lowland catchment (Can Revull, Mallorca, Spain, 1.4 km2) by establishing an integrated sediment budget with a multi-technique approach. Moreover, the recent advances in morphometric techniques…

Risk factors for bile leakage after liver resection for neoplastic disease.

2022

Biliary leakage (BL) remains the most frequent and feared complication after hepatoresective surgery. Placement of the abdominal drainage at the end of liver surgery remains controversial due to the delicate balance between risks and potential benefits in case of BL. The study was aimed to detect possible risk factors for BL occurrence after liver surgery. We enrolled all oncologic patients who underwent liver resection from June 2016 to March 2021. BL was diagnosed according to the ISGLS definition. We have examined demographic characteristics of the patients, type of neoplasia, presence of cirrhosis, neoadjuvant chemotherapy and type of intervention. Uni- and multivariable analyses were p…

Management scenarios preventing salinization under irrigation with saline water.

2006

Management scenarios aimed at optimizing irrigation in a Sicilian vineyard characterized by a cracking clay soil irrigated with saline water were explored for seven soil profiles (Baglio 1-Baglio 7), by using the simulation model soil-water-atmosphere-plant environment (SWAP), which accounts for shrinkage and cracking. Accurate prediction of water content, theta, was obtained for the seven profiles by expressing the soil hydraulic properties according to the Brutsaert retention equation coupled with the hydraulic conductivity model proposed by Gardner (B-G model). A satisfactory prediction of the electrical conductivity of saturated extract (ECsat) ad was obtained using for the dispersivity…

Cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics of ceftaroline in neurosurgical patients with an external ventricular drain

2019

IF 5.217; International audience; BackgroundOwing to its antibacterial properties, ceftaroline could be attractive for prevention or treatment of bacterial post-neurosurgical meningitis/ventriculitis. However, few data are available concerning its meningeal concentrations.ObjectivesTo investigate ceftaroline CSF pharmacokinetics in ICU patients with an external ventricular drain (EVD).MethodsPatients received a single 600 mg dose of ceftaroline as a 1 h intravenous infusion. Blood and CSF samples were collected before and 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after the end of the infusion. Concentrations were assayed in plasma and CSF by LC–MS/MS. A two-step compartmental pharmacokinetic analysis was c…

Duodenal perforation due to an abdominal drain placed after appendectomy in a child

2008

Insertion of abdominal drainage after appendectomy is controversial. We report on a case of duodenal perforation due to a silastic open drainage tube placed in the right para-colic gutter after appendectomy for perforated appendicitis. This case offers a clue against too liberal usage of abdominal drainage after appendectomy. Conservative management of bowel perforations secondary to abdominal drainages should be attempted in the absence of generalised peritonitis.

Endoscopic cytology in biliary strictures. Personal experience

2008

The differential diagnosis between malignant and benign biliary strictures is the cornerstone of the management of jaundiced patients. The aim of our study is to define the role of cytology of the bile withdrawn during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), to reach a diagnosis of the nature of biliary stricture. This retrospective study was conducted on 67 consecutive patients affected of ingravescent obstructive jaundice who underwent ERCP+/-PTE (percutaneous transhepatic endoscopic)+bile withdrawn+stenting. We founded hilar stricture in 21 patients (31.3%), middle third the common duct stricture in 17 (25.3%), and lower third stricture in 28 patients (41.4%). In one patien…

Factors affecting between-lake variation in the occurrence of epidermal papillomatosis in roach,Rutilus rutilus(L.)

2009

The theory of island biogeography predicts that the probability of a species occupying an island depends on a dynamic equilibrium between extinction and colonization. Epidermal papillomatosis is a disease manifesting as skin tumours on fish. We studied the factors affecting the occurrence of the disease in roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), in 34 lakes. The results of discrimination analysis suggest that maximum depth, percentage of the drainage area of the lake covered by lakes in the vicinity and altitude best identified diseased lakes. Comparison of diseased and non-diseased lakes revealed that lake area could also be regarded as a variable contributing to the occurrence of the disease. The sa…

A Randomized Trial of a Schlemm's Canal Microstent with Phacoemulsification for Reducing Intraocular Pressure in Open-Angle Glaucoma

2014

Purpose To assess the safety and effectiveness of the Hydrus Microstent (Ivantis, Inc, Irvine, CA) with concurrent cataract surgery (CS) for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in open-angle glaucoma (OAG). Design Prospective, multicenter, randomized, single-masked, controlled clinical trial. Participants One hundred eyes from 100 patients 21 to 80 years of age with OAG and cataract with IOP of 24 mmHg or less with 4 or fewer hypotensive medications and a washed-out diurnal IOP (DIOP) of 21 to 36 mmHg. Methods On the day of surgery, patients were randomized 1:1 to undergo CS with the microstent or CS alone. Postoperative follow-up was at 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Wa…
