The translation of foreign playwrights as a step towards modernity in 18th century Spanish drama

2013

This article is the English version of “La traducción de piezas extranjeras como vía hacia la modernidad en el teatro español del siglo XVIII” by Francisco Lafarga. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. After analysing the attempts at renewing Spanish drama in the 18th century, together with the numerous allusions to foreign drama in this period, attention is paid to the assimilation, by means of translation, of a number of French models (tragedies, comedies of manners, pieces of opéra-comique, etc.), which reached an uneven success, determ…

In the Beginning Was Silence: Brian Friel's Revisitation of the Artist

2017

When writing his 1997 play Give Me Your Answer, Do!, Brian Friel made an “exciting discovery”: Harpocrates, the God of Silence. For a writer who had been so much at pains to show on stage the inability of words to communicate the innermost feelings, this infant god was readily embraced as the perfect symbol with which to begin and end, as in the Ancient Rome, this transcendent performance. By placing the character of Bridget, an inarticulate autistic girl, at the beginning and at the ending of Give Me Your Answer, Do!, Friel counterbalances the “sound and the fury” that pervades modern life as reflected in the three couples of the play, while, at the same time, this reminds the audience of …

Tove Jansson’s Picturebook Who Will Comfort Toffle? as a Heroic Poem
This article offers an analysis of Tove Jansson’s picturebook Vem ska trösta knyttet? (Who Will Comfort Toffle?) from 1960 as a heroic poem and dramatic monologue, representing an alternative reading to earlier studies of this picturebook as a coherent narrative. Drawing on theory about heroic poetry, poetry and picturebook analysis, we provide a reading that expands those interpretations of Vem ska trösta knyttet? that emphasize the romantic and psychological projects of the book when read as a narrative story. By reading Vem ska trösta knyttet? as a heroic poem, we explore the text as an uttered, ritualistic, and i…

The new England code : controlling female agency in contemporary American tv drama

2008

Masteroppgave i engelsk - Universitetet i Agder 2008 In an attempt to contextualize the DC observations, the overarching super-genre of melo-drama has been given particular attention. The relevance of melodrama is evident as the main ‘corpus’ of the survey, Cold Case, embodies a range of melodramatic traits. Furthermore, as will be seen in Chapters 1 and 3 particularly, melodramatic and Puritan value sets tend to overlap, especially in the attitude towards family. All chapters include analyses of individual Cold Case episodes, and each analysis comes with a description of scenes within the episode written in a slightly more subjective language. This has been done in order to provide the rea…
