Public opinion is not worried about drug dependence and other addictive disorders anymore. The changes in consumption patterns and the lack of visible situations related to drugs consumption have removed this problem from the top of the media’s agenda; however, we are able to establish that this is not a settled problem from the past, but quite the opposite. The present study aims to provide a sociological overview of anabolic steroid use in Valencia (Spain), with particular attention to social factors that promote and sustain the recreational use of this drug. We consider not only the extensively documented health risks, but also the social determinants associated with its use.
