Effect of soil permanent grass cover on growth, yield and water status of rainfed olive trees in Sicily

The study was carried out in an olive grove located along the hills of northern Sicily where soil had been managed for decades by chemical weeding. Starting in 2008, one portion of the grove was left non-weeded, and the permanent grass cover was managed by mowing 2-3 times per year in winter and spring. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, yield, average drupe weight, percentage of drupe black color (veraison), trunk circumference, shoot elongation, and leaf relative water content (RWC) were determined on 34 adult trees of the cultivar 'Biancolilla' with uniform size and age. Das kompositorische Verfahren in Jean Moutons Quadrupelkanon Nesciens mater virgo virum

Anhand der kompositorischen Probleme, die sich bei der Konzeption mehr als zweistimmiger Kanons ergeben, wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie der konkrete Kompositionsprozess um 1500 ausgesehen haben konnte. Eine Analyse von Jean Moutons Motette Nesciens mater zeigt, dass die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kanonkonzeption, Klangfolge und melodischer Gestaltung eine simultane Kompositionsweise voraussetzen, in der die Klangfolge wechselnde Verhaltnisbestimmungen als Resultat und Voraussetzung der kontrapunktischen Konfiguration erfahrt: Der Wechsel von der Sukzessiv- zur Simultankonzeption erscheint in Bezug auf komplexe Kanonbildungen als ein verfahrenstechnisches Erfordernis.
Kinematics of obstacle clearance in the rat

Although the rat has become the favourite animal model in preclinical research on locomotion, studies designed to assess the strategy used by rats to avoid obstacle are lacking. Using an optoelectronic 3D motion analysis system, we therefore, compared the step pattern, timing and length variables of locomotor cycles, trajectories and joint angles of limbs when rats step between and over obstacles (3 cm-high) fixed on a treadmill belt (25 cm/s). Motion in all four limbs of adult animals with an initial age of 11 weeks was serially recorded for a period of 10 weeks. Despite the global economic importance of olive (Olea europaea L.), little is known about the molecular and metabolic changes during fruit development and the modulation of quality-related metabolic pathways during drought stress. In this work, we report the expression pattern of genes involved in important pathways of secondary metabolism (polyphenols, terpenoids) during fruit development in rainfed or fully irrigated olive plants. Phenolic compounds represent a complex mixture in both olive fruits and oil. Parassitizzazione di Bactrocera oleae su olivo coltivato e selvatico in Sicilia e nel Western Cape (Sud Africa)

Nel 2009 e nel 2010 in Sicilia e nella regione del Western Cape (Sud Africa) sono stati condotti studi sulla parassitizzazione della mosca delle olive, Bactrocera oleae, raccogliendo i frutti su piante di olivo coltivato (Olea europaea ssp. europaea) e selvatico (O. europaea ssp. oleaster in Sicilia, O. europaea ssp. cuspidata in Sud Africa); le piante delle due sottospecie erano non trattate e distanti pochi metri. I campioni sono stati raccolti nell’arco di quattro mesi in Sicilia e di due mesi in Sud Africa.
