Duality and spatial inhomogeneity
2001
Within the framework on non-extensive thermostatistics we revisit the recently advanced q-duality concept. We focus our attention here on a modified q-entropic measure of the spatial inhomogeneity for binary patterns. At a fixed length-scale this measure exhibits a generalised duality that links appropriate pairs of q and q' values. The simplest q q' invariant function, without any free parameters, is deduced here. Within an adequate interval q < qo < q', in which the function reaches its maximum value at qo, this invariant function accurately approximates the investigated q-measure, nitidly evidencing the duality phenomenon. In the close vicinity of qo, the approximate meaningful rel…
Block–Savits Characterization and Star Ordering of Exponential Mixtures
2008
Block and Savits (1980) established a characterization of life distributions using the Laplace transform. In this article, we remark that one of the necessary conditions to be IFRA distribution is equivalent to the star ordering of exponential mixtures. It leads to the definition of two new classes of life distributions, called LIFR and LIFRA, and their dual classes: LDFR and LDFRA. It occurs that these classes have many useful aging properties and preserve known reliability operations. Properties of the classes are studied and relations with known classes are established.
GAMLSS for high-variability data: an application to liver fibrosis case
2020
In this paper, we propose management of the problem caused by overdispersed data by applying the generalized additive model for location, scale and shape framework (GAMLSS) as introduced by Rigby and Stasinopoulos (2005). The idea of using a GAMLSS approach for handling our problem comes from the idea of Aitkin (1996) consisting in the use of an EM maximum likelihood estimation algorithm (Dempster, Laird, and Rubin, 1977) to deal with overdispersed generalized linear models (GLM). As in the GLM case, the algorithm is initially derived as a form of Gaussian quadrature assuming a normal mixing distribution. The GAMLSS specification allows the extension of the Aitkin algorithm to probability d…
Residuenanalyse des Unabhängigkeitsmodells Zweier Kategorialer Variablen
1985
For the ‘cellwise’ analysis of independence of two categorial variables, Haberman (1973) proposes the method of ‘adjusted residuals’. Fuchs and Kenett (1980) use (the absolute value of) the maximal adjusted residual as a measure for the deviation from the null hypothesis.
The kinematics of water masers in the stellar molecular outflow source, IRAS 19134+2131
2004
Using the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), we have observed water maser emission in the proto-planetary nebula candidate IRAS 19134+2131, in which the water maser spectrum has two groups of emission features separated in radial velocity by ∼100 km s^−1. The blue-shifted and red-shifted clusters of maser features are clearly separated spatially by ∼150 mas, indicative of a fast collimated flow. However, not all of the maser features are aligned along the axis of the flow, as is seen in the similar high-velocity water maser source, W43A. Comparing the VLA and VLBA maps of the water maser source, we find 4 maser features that were active for 2 years. Using only V…
Mapping accretion and its variability in the young open cluster NGC 2264: A study based on u-band photometry
2014
We aim at characterizing the accretion properties of several hundred members of the star-forming cluster NGC 2264 (3 Myr). We performed a deep u,g,r,i mapping and a simultaneous u+r monitoring of the region with CFHT/MegaCam in order to directly probe the accretion process from UV excess measurements. Photometric properties and stellar parameters are determined homogeneously for about 750 monitored young objects, spanning the mass range 0.1-2 Mo. About 40% are classical (accreting) T Tauri stars, based on various diagnostics (H_alpha, UV and IR excesses). The remaining non-accreting members define the (photospheric+chromospheric) reference UV emission level over which flux excess is detecte…
CGCG 480-022: A Distant Lonesome Merger?
2006
[EN]We present a complete analysis, which includes morphology, kinematics, stellar populations, and N-body simulations, of CGCG 480-022, the most distant (cz = 14,317 km s-1) isolated galaxy studied so far in such detail. The results all support the hypothesis that this galaxy has suffered a major merger event with a companion of ~0.1 times its mass. Morphology reveals the presence of a circumnuclear ring and possibly further ring debris. The radial velocity curve looks symmetrical, while the velocity dispersion increases with radius, reaching values that do not correspond to a virialized system. Moreover, this galaxy deviates significantly from the fundamental plane and the Faber-Jackson r…
The Gaia-ESO survey: Discovery of a spatially extended low-mass population in the Vela OB2 association
2015
The nearby (distance~350-400 pc), rich Vela OB2 association, includes $\gamma^2$ Velorum, one of the most massive binaries in the solar neighbourhood and an excellent laboratory for investigating the formation and early evolution of young clusters. Recent Gaia-ESO survey observations have led to the discovery of two kinematically distinct populations in the young (10-15 Myr) cluster immediately surrounding $\gamma^2$ Velorum. Here we analyse the results of Gaia-ESO survey observations of NGC 2547, a 35 Myr cluster located two degrees south of $\gamma^2$ Velorum. The radial velocity distribution of lithium-rich pre-main sequence stars shows a secondary population that is kinematically distin…

Advances in Strain Gauge Measurement on Composite Materials
2010
Abstract: This article gives an overview on the application of strain gauge techniques to the analysis of the strains in composite materials. The orthotropic behaviour of the composite influences the performance of strain gauges that are calibrated for use on isotropic materials. The article considers therefore the typical topics of the strain gauge technology applied to composites with particular reference to the compensation of thermal output, the measurement of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the determination of the strain and stress state, the influence of the misalignment error, the reinforcement effect, the determination of the stress intensification factor, the analysis of r…
