The role of adolescent athletes' task value patterns in their educational and athletic career aspirations
2018
Abstract The present study examined the stability and change in task value patterns that Finnish student-athletes (n = 391) show during their first two years in upper secondary sport school and the extent to which these patterns, and changes in them, are associated with students' future educational and athletic career aspirations . By using latent profile analysis , three different and highly stable motivational patterns were identified among adolescents: (1) a dual motivated pattern, characterized by high value placed on both school and sport; (2) a low academically motivated pattern, characterized by a high value placed on sport but a low value on school; and (3) a relatively low sport m…
Spatial and temporal distribution of SARS-CoV-2 diversity circulating in wastewater
2022
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has proven to be an effective tool for epidemiological surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, combining WBE together with high-throughput sequencing techniques can be useful for the analysis of SARS-CoV-2 viral diversity present in a given sample. The present study focuses on the genomic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in 76 sewage samples collected during the three epidemiological waves that occurred in Spain from 14 wastewater treatment plants distributed throughout the country. The results obtained demonstrate that the metagenomic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater allows the detection of mutations that define the B.1.1.…
Dual Inequalities for Stabilized Column Generation Revisited
2014
Column generation (CG) models have several advantages over compact formulations: they provide better linear program bounds, may eliminate symmetry, and can hide nonlinearities in their subproblems. However, users also encounter drawbacks in the form of slow convergence, also known as the tailing-off effect, and the oscillation of the dual variables. Among different alternatives for stabilizing the CG process, Ben Amor et al. [Ben Amor H, Desrosiers J, Valério de Carvalho JM (2006) Dual-optimal inequalities for stabilized column generation. Oper. Res. 54(3):454–463] suggest the use of dual-optimal inequalities (DOIs) in the context of cutting stock and bin packing problems. We generalize th…
Simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the low-mass X-ray binary GX 13+1
2004
We present the results of two simultaneous X-ray/radio observations of the low-mass X-ray binary GX 13+1, performed in July/August 1999 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Very Large Array. In X-rays the source was observed in two distinct spectral states; a soft state, which had a corresponding 6 cm flux density of ~0.25 mJy, and a hard state, which was much brighter at 1.3-7.2 mJy. For the radio bright observation we measured a delay between changes in the X-ray spectral hardness and the radio brightness of ~40 minutes, similar to what has been found in the micro-quasar GRS 1915+105. We compare our results with those of GRS 1915+105 and the atoll/Z-type neutron star X-ray binarie…

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mobility in ten countries and associated perceived risk for all transport modes.
2021
The restrictive measures implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have triggered sudden massive changes to travel behaviors of people all around the world. This study examines the individual mobility patterns for all transport modes (walk, bicycle, motorcycle, car driven alone, car driven in company, bus, subway, tram, train, airplane) before and during the restrictions adopted in ten countries on six continents: Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, South Africa and the United States. This cross-country study also aims at understanding the predictors of protective behaviors related to the transport sector and COVID-19. Findings hinge upon an online survey con…

Film Nationality: The Relevance of This Concept in Europe
2019
Discussing films’ nationality raises two questions. The first relates to the identity and culture films are supposed to transmit. The second relates to the duality of the sector, which is divided i...

Hypothetical Investment Bias
2018
Young, entrepreneurial firms are particularly dependent on external investors to sustain their development. Are non-binding equity investment commitments informative? Our large sample evidence in the context of equity crowdfunding shows that only 18% of non-binding commitments made by investors in entrepreneurial firms are actually invested. The evidence is consistent with hypothetical bias. Hypothetical bias is significantly less pronounced among women, and among investors with greater social capital, proxied by education and wealth. While investment intentions are only partially reliable at the individual level, the aggregate amount of collected investment intentions is a strong predictor…
