Histological and fine structural features of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas in relation to growth and prognosis: studies in xenografted tumours an…
1985
Histology and fine structure of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas were assessed with respect to their significance for tumour growth and prognosis. The histological parameters included glandular differentiation, nuclear anaplasia, nuclear size, and mitotic activity (number of mitoses per high power field). Using these criteria three grades of malignancy were distinguished. They correlated well with the growth kinetics of seven human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas transplanted into nude mice. The tumour doubling time of a G 3 carcinoma was about half that of a G 1 carcinoma. On electron microscopy the tumour grade was reflected in the degree of functional differentiation of the neoplastic…
Beyond the amygdala: Linguistic threat modulates peri-sylvian semantic access cortices
2015
In this study, healthy volunteers were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural systems involved in processing the threatening content conveyed via visually presented “threat words.” The neural responses elicited by these words were compared to those elicited by matched neutral control words. The results demonstrate that linguistic threat, when presented in written form, can selectively engage areas of lateral temporal and inferior frontal cortex, distinct from the core language areas implicated in aphasia. Additionally, linguistic threat modulates neural activity in visceral/emotional systems (amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus and periaqueductal gr…
Clinical and pathologic characteristics of BRCA-positive and BRCA-negative male breast cancer patients: results from a collaborative multicenter stud…
2012
Recently, the number of studies on male breast cancer (MBC) has been increasing. However, as MBC is a rare disease there are difficulties to undertake studies to identify specific MBC subgroups. At present, it is still largely unknown whether BRCA-related breast cancer (BC) in men may display specific characteristics as it is for BRCA-related BC in women. To investigate the clinical–pathologic features of MBC in association with BRCA mutations we established a collaborative Italian Multicenter Study on MBC with the aim to recruit a large series of MBCs. A total of 382 MBCs, including 50 BRCA carriers, were collected from ten Italian Investigation Centres covering the whole country. In MBC p…
The Role of Third Ventriculostomy in the Management of Obstructive Hydrocephalus
2003
Objective: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is an effective treatment for occlusive hydrocephalus caused by an obstruction of the CSF flow in the aqueduct or the posterior fossa. We evaluated the factors age, pathology and surgical technique on the results of the ETV. Methods: Between November 1992 and October 2000 171 ETV have been performed in 159 patients. The follow-up was evaluated in 150 patients. The age ranged from 10 days to 77 years (mean age 35 years). The hydrocephalus was caused by benign aqueductal stenosis in 77 patients, space-occupying lesions in 59, by intraventricular hemorrhages in 11, and by other causes in 3 patients. The trajectory was planned in 31 patients by …
Preoperative diagnostics in pancreatic carcinoma: would less be better?
1998
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the value of preoperative diagnostics in patients with pancreatic carcinoma in terms of tumor diagnosis and evaluation of resectability. Patients/Methods: From 1 September 1985 to 31 December 1997, 408 patients shown by histology to have a ductal (n=330) or periampullary carcinoma (n=78) were treated at our hospital. Results: In determining the presence of tumor, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) had a sensitivity of 88.3% and 94.0%, respectively; combined, they had a sensitivity of 96.2%. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) had a sensitivity of 96.2%. Preoperative aspiration biopsy cytology had a sensiti…
Lysosomal aspartic and cysteine proteinases serum levels in patients with pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis
1997
Lysosomal cathepsins D (CD), B (CB), and L (CL) serum levels were determined by immunoassays in patients with chronic (CHP) or acute (AP) pancreatitis and in patients with ductal pancreatic carcinoma (DPC) and correlated with some biological and clinical parameters of this tumor. CB serum concentrations significantly higher than those measured in healthy subjects (NS) were observed in CHP, AP, and DPC patients (p < 0.01). However, no significant difference was noted among these groups. Increased CL serum levels were evident only in cancer patients compared to NS, AP, or CHP groups (p < 0.05), while no difference was observed among these groups. Elevated CD serum values were observed i…
Are pancreatic calcifications specific for the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis? A multidetector-row CT analysis
2009
Aim To retrospectively establish the most frequently encountered diagnoses in patients with pancreatic calcifications and to investigate whether the association of certain findings could be helpful for diagnosis. Materials and methods One hundred and three patients were included in the study. The location and distribution of calcifications; presence, nature, and enhancement pattern of pancreatic lesions; pancreatic atrophy and ductal dilatation were recorded. Differences between patients with chronic pancreatitis and patients with other entities were compared by using Fisher's exact test. Results Patients had chronic pancreatitis ( n =70), neuroendocrine tumours ( n =14), intraductal papill…
PANCREATIC CARCINOMA VERSUS CHRONIC FOCAL PANCREATITIS: CONTRAST-ENHANCED POWER DOPPLER ULTRASONOGRAPHY FINDINGS
2005
Background: We assessed the potential usefulness of contrast-enhanced power Doppler ultrasonography (US) for differentiating pancreatic carcinoma from chronic focal pancreatitis. Methods: Twenty-six consecutive patients with ductal carcinoma (n=16) and chronic focal pancreatitis (n=10) underwent power Doppler US examinations before and after intravenous injection of an air-based contrast agent (Levovist, Schering, Berlin, Germany). Final diagnosis was obtained by surgery in all patients. The following parameters before and after intravenous administration of contrast agent were evaluated for each lesion: number, morphology and course of the vessels within the lesion and time to maximum dete…
Elevated [18F]FDOPA utilization in the periaqueductal gray and medial nucleus accumbens of patients with early Parkinson's disease
2010
Udgivelsesdato: 2010-Feb-15 PET studies with the DOPA decarboxylase substrate 6-[(18)F]fluoro-l-DOPA (FDOPA) reveal the storage of [(18)F]-fluorodopamine within synaptic vesicles, mainly of dopamine fibres. As such, FDOPA PET is a sensitive indicator of the integrity of the nigrostriatal dopamine innervation. Nonetheless, there have been several reports of focal elevations of FDOPA utilization in brain of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), all based on reference tissue methods. To investigate this phenomenon further, we used voxel-wise steady-state kinetic analysis to search for regions of elevated FDOPA utilization (K; ml g(-1) min(-1)) and steady-state trapping (V(d); ml g(-1)) in a …
The prognostic value of sentinel lymph node micrometastases in patients with invasive breast carcinoma
2016
The prognostic value of sentinel lymph node micrometastases in invasive breast cancer patients is still widely debated. Even if, in the absence of unequivocal guidelines, the axillary lynphadenectomy is not still performed in the routine clinical care of these patients. We have retrospectively analyzed 746 patients with operable invasive breast cancer and clinically negative axillary lymph nodes. These patients underwent conservative surgery or total mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Patients with micrometastases in the sentinel lymph node treated with axillary dissection has been checked and the involvement of the remaining lymph nodes analyzed. Patients with micrometastases in th…
