Abstract Aluminum‑silicon (Al Si) alloys of high silicon contents are composite materials; they are used whenever high casting properties are required. They are slightly ductile below 8wt%Si. An increase in ductility can be obtained by refining Si-crystals in elaboration or by a further hot working. In the present work, an Al-7wt%Si alloy was processed by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) at temperatures 20 °C and 160 °C up to three passes. Synthesis of FeAl Hetero-Nanostructured Bulk Parts via Spark Plasma Sintering of Milled Powder

AbstractSpark plasma sintering (SPS) has been used in order to introduce nanocrystalline grains within fully dense FeAl consolidated parts. Hetero-nanostructured parts, consisting of nano, ultrafine and micrometric grains, have been successfully processed when milled - Y2O3 reinforced - FeAl powder was used. The large temperature differences that are spontaneously generated during the SPS process as well as the use of milled powder account for the formation of such interesting structures. The grain size distribution - that is suggested to be very potent to improve both strength and ductility - could be significantly modified by a proper selection of sintering temperature and holding time.
Modelling load-transmission mechanisms in axially loaded RC columns retrofitted with steel jackets

The use of steel jacketing technique is a common practice for retrofitting existing reinforced concrete (RC) columns, as it allows increasing load-carrying capacity and ductility of the member. When the external jacket has no-end connections – i.e. the jacket is indirectly loaded- the load sustained by the column is transferred from the inner RC core to the external jacket through shear stresses along the contact surface. Experimental results of the local bond stress-slip relationship of reinforcing bars embedded in lightweight fiber reinforced concrete with expanded clay aggregates are presented. The effect of the following parameters were investigated: - dimension of specimens; - anchorage length; - percentages of hooked steel fibers; - geometrical ratio of transverse reinforcement; - confinement external transverse pressure. Summary The study concerns the behaviour of steel MR-frames subjected to vertical and lateral forces, not properly designed according to capacity design criteria, and upgraded by means of encasing the steel columns with concrete having different grade. The purpose of the paper is to examine if the proposed technique allows one to adequately increase the lateral stiffness and the resistance of the frames.
