Reliable measures of plastic deformations for elastic plastic structures in shakedown conditions

2020

A new formulation for evaluating reliable measures of the plastic deformations occurring in the transient phase of a structure in shakedown conditions is proposed. The structure is thought as constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material and subjected to a combination of fixed and cyclic loads. The proposed formulation consists in the search for the optimal plastic strain field that minimize a suitable objective function defining a strain energy measure related to the plastic strains at the shakedown limit. The typical self-stress field can be obtained as the elastic structural response to an assigned plastic strain field respecting appropriate ductility limits for the material. Without…

Strength and ductility of RC jacketed columns: A simplified analytical method

2016

Abstract Reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing is a common method for retrofitting existing columns with poor structural performance. It can be applied in two different ways: if the continuity of the jacket is ensured, the axial load of the column can be transferred to the jacket, which will be directly loaded; conversely, if no continuity is provided, the jacket will induce only confinement action. In both cases the strength and ductility evaluation is rather complex, due to the different physical phenomena included, such as confinement, core–jacket composite action, preload and buckling of longitudinal bars. Although different theoretical studies have been carried out to calculate the confin…

Seismic response of braced frames with and without friction dampers

1995

Abstract The dynamic response of friction damped bracing systems and ordinary cross-bracing systems inserted into surrounding frames without lateral stiffness is analysed in order to compare the typical behaviour of the two different bracing systems. The cyclic force-displacement relationship in the two cases is accurately modelled on the basis of experimental and related numerical models which are available in the literature, and the structural dimensionless parameters defining the shapes of the cycles are stressed. Systems having the same average period of vibration in the elastic phase of the response are assumed to be comparable with one another, which leads to a relationship linking th…

A practical approach for the strength evaluation of RC columns reinforced with RC jackets

2015

Abstract Reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing is nowadays one of the most common techniques adopted for seismic retrofitting of existing RC columns. It is used to increase load-carrying capacity and ductility of weak existing members by means of a simple and cheap method. The structural efficiency is related to two main effects: – the enlargement of the transverse cross section; – the confinement action provided by the external jacket to the inner core. Several theoretical and experimental studies were addressed in the past to investigate on how it is possible to calculate the strength enhancement due to these effects and to highlight the main key parameters influencing the structural behavio…

A Laboratory Scale Equipment to Relieve Force and Pressure in Cold Extrusion of Lead Hollow Components

2008

Nowadays, many researchers are involved in studies aimed to the explanation of some peculiar aspects regarding manufacturing processes. In this paper, an experimental campaign was carried out in order to reproduce tube extrusion starting from a cylindrical billet. In particular, the development of a proper equipment is presented: the aim was to measure both the total load, by using the testing machine load cell, and the local pressure value on the porthole. The latter task was carried out performing a proper system based on the use of a small load-cell. The tube was extruded with a good surface quality and the external area does not show any welding line evidence. Pure Lead was used for the…

Modeling of out-of-plane behavior of masonry walls

2009

The flexural behavior of rectangular masonry sections is investigated by considering nonlinear stress-strain in compression and limited-tension material. A preliminary analysis shows that, with variation in the parameters specializing with the adopted conventional constitutive law, the experimentally observed behavior of different kinds of masonry materials can be approximated. Subsequently, moment-curvature dimensionless curves are derived numerically by satisfying the equilibrium equations of the section. In the case of negligible tensile strength these curves exhibit a typical shape that can be approximated by analytical expressions; consequently, suitable functions are proposed that are…

Cyclic behavior of composite truss beam-to-RC column joints in MRFS

2016

In the present paper, the cyclic behavior of beam-to-column joints made up of Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) connected to Reinforced Concrete (RC) piers is investigated. HSTCBs are a typology of composite beam generally constituted by a steel truss with end zone added rebars embedded within a block of concrete cast in place. HSTCBs represent a structural solution for light industrialization in the civil constructions; the main advantages in their use are the higher construction speed with the minimum site labor, the possibility of covering wide spans with low depths and a final economical convenience. For these reasons, they are also increasingly adopted within seismic framed …

Concrete softening effects on the axial capacity of RC jacketed circular columns

2016

Abstract Among the different strengthening techniques to repair RC structures, reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing is one of the most commonly adopted, especially for columns. Its wide application is due to its easy application and relatively reduced cost with respect to other methods (e.g. FRP wrapping, Shape Memory Alloy active confinement). The target of RC jacketing is to increase axial, flexural capacity and ductility of weak existing members by means of two main effects: confinement action provided by the jacket and composite action between external jacket and inner concrete. Different theoretical studies have been carried out to calculate the strength enhancement due to confinement ac…

Theoretical approaches for modelling buckling effects in rebars of RC members

2017

Buckling of longitudinal bars in reinforced concrete (RC) members is definitely a critical issue in framed structures subjected to seismic loads. Second order effects can affect the compressive stress–strain law of steel bars, influencing ductility calculations of RC structures. Moreover, literature studies show that buckling can occur over a length wider than stirrups’ pitch (global buckling mode), involving more stirrups and inducing large deflections in the bar. If the critical length is not carefully estimated, stirrups’ failure can occur, causing also the sudden loss of confining effects in concrete. This paper presents the results of different approaches for calculating the crit…

RC column externally strengthened with RC jackets

2013

In this paper the behaviour in compression of RC columns externally strengthened with concrete jacketing is analysed and a cross-section analysis of the jacketed member under axial load and bending moment is developed. The focus was to study the effect of confinement of concrete jacket on concrete core and the behaviour of compressed bars with buckling effects. Some other important aspects such as shrinkage, creep, old to new concrete surfaces and bond split effects were not included in the model because: the use of thick non-shrink grout jacket and a well-roughened surface of old-to-new concrete was supposed; long term effects were included though corrective coefficients for monolithic beh…
