2022
Hiroshima mon amour depicts tight relations between memory and oblivion. The novel ’s love story takes place in France ’s collective memory, but it also refers to the individual memory of a woman evoking past events. Consequently, the encounter with another human being (a man) allows her to confront her personal trauma. This confrontation can be perceived as a quest for one ’s own identity and history, i.e. the alienation history of an individual who – due to an unhappy love affair – cannot escape either the past or oblivion. The permeation of these two notions is emphasised by diverse time perspectives which overlap each other, allowing for an intertextual reading of Duras ’ script. Hence,…
2016
The works of Marguerite Duras show visible hybridity, broadly understood as a mixture of genres, correspondence of the arts, or intertextuality. Her texts reflect, par excellence, this tendency because they keep departing from classical forms. Conseąuently, the same text can be interpreted as a novel, screenplay, or film. This transgression seemingly results from the versatility of changing artistic interests of Duras, who, while writing, was fascinated by film-making and all possibilities of experimentation. The transgression is confirmed by a kind of polyphony of voices in her works, which makes them both extremely suggestive and open. A prime example of this technique is Le Navire Night.…
2018
The work of Marguerite Duras draws on such concepts as rejection, loss, and transgression. A deviation from the current norms and rules of language and rhetoric is part of a wider reflection on the discourse of women in the public sphere. The issue of exclusion in Duras’s texts resonates particularly strongly in the context of ‘thresholds’ of paratext defined by Gerard Genette. Such analysis shows the coexistence of text and nontext in the creative process. The author avoids explicitness to underscore the specificity of her unfinished/broken writing. Particularly noteworthy is the fragmentation of the meta-narrative. Using decomposition, cross-genre, and silence, Duras makes the reader awar…
“La solitude de l'auteur” en tant que condition sine qua non de l'acte créateur chez Marguerite Duras
2019
Loneliness seems to be a leitmotif of Marguerite Duras’s literary oeuvre. It is interpreted by the writer primarily as a personal experience, a specific form of freedom, the dominant expression of which is silence expressing pain, loss, inability to communicate with other people, unfulfilled love. Loneliness is also seen as a sine qua non condition that allows one to focus on oneself, to close oneself in one’s own world. This is an indispensable element of the author’s poetics, the one having an ontological character, referring to “the way of thinking, reasoning”. Duras treats loneliness as a typical condition of every true writer, inscribed in his or her condition, and argues that one can …

2016
Madness is an inherent quality of female protagonists in the prose of Marguerite Duras. It manifests itself through melancholy, sadness, loneliness, misunderstanding or absence arising from abandonment. The behaviour of female characters, marked by distress or “the disease of death”, is irrational, nonsensical and difficult to understand. Their attitude defies logic and attempts to capture this specificity of writing focused on the emotive sphere, on what is inexpressible. This article discusses the perception of femininity and its various incarnations, manifesting themselves through specific language, sexuality and obsessions inscribed in the nature of the weaker sex. The destruction of pe…

Le périple erratique de la mendiante durassienne
2022
Marguerite Duras focuses on a rejected individual on the margins of society. Her literary characters oppose being perceived as devoid of autonomy, contesting the fixed model of a submissive and passive woman. On the contrary, they reject the social order and the traditional system of values, claiming the right to freedom and thus demonstrating transgressive female behaviour. Duras’ heroine, a mysterious, crazy person who is looking for love and is aware of her otherness and alienation, appears as a kind of femme fatale or a witch. This image of a “different” woman – a disturbing, unhappy, lost, borderline person experiencing a specific crisis – is best illustrated by a beggar. She identifie…
