Five novel metal-free organic dyes DQ1-5 containing a dipentyldithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline (DPQ) unit were synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where DPQ was employed as a π-spacer for the first time. Their photophysical, electrochemical, and theoretical calculations and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. All the five dyes show broad photoresponse. Especially the absorption edges of DQ3-5 extend to 800 nm on the TiO2 films. Optical properties of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) in the presence of nanocrystalline TiO2 (nominal diameter 15 nm) have been investigated in ethanol solution and in the solid state by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence. Experimental results show that, in ethanol, the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles causes significant changes in the typical absorption and fluorescence bands of PTCA and in the fluorescence relaxation time. Two zinc porphyrins, 2 and 8, have been synthesized. Porphyrin 8 displays better electronic communication between the dye and the TiO2 electrode. Photophysical measurements and electrochemistry experiments suggest that both porphyrins are very promising sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It was found that their molecular orbital energy levels favor electron injection and dye regeneration in DSSCs. Solar cells sensitized by 2 and 8 were fabricated, and it was found that they show power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 5.27% and 7.13%, respectively. Fluorescence labels as sensors for oxygen binding of arthropod hemocyanins

The molecular basis of high cooperativity in multi-subunit proteins is still unknown in most cases. Oxygen binding by multi-subunit hemocyanins produces two intrinsic spectroscopic signals which are, however, either limited to the UV or are very weak. Here we demonstrate that fluorescence labels emitting in the visible can be used as sensors for cooperative oxygen binding of hemocyanins. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer to the oxygenated active sites quenches the emission of the labels by roughly 50% upon oxygenation of the protein. In this article the preliminary evaluation of the performance of a photovoltaic window is presented. The aim is to trace the behavior of next-generation systems, which favor architectonical integration. Three different systems have been taken into account: a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), blue and grey caved silicon panels. The systems can be placed behind a window or behind a wall of glass blocks.
