Perylenediimide (PDI) compounds with no substituents in their core are widely used as the active units of thin-film organic lasers. Recently, bay-substituted PDIs (b-PDIs) bearing two sterically hindering diphenylphenoxy groups at the 1,7-bay positions have received great attention because they show red-shifted emission with respect to bay-unsubstituted PDIs, while maintaining high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields and low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) thresholds even at high doping rates. Quaternary ammonium polyiodides as ionic liquid/soft solid electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract Four new quaternary ammonium iodides, (Me 2 Pe 2 N)I, (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I, (Et 2 Pe 2 N)I and (Et 2 Hex 2 N)I, were synthesized and studied as electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells. All compounds were solids at room temperature. Influence of varying amounts of elemental iodine and the effect of tert -butylpyridine (TBP) on the performance of the cell was also studied. Addition of iodine lowered the melting points of the resulting polyiodides. From the ammonium iodides only (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I:I 2 (10:1) was liquid at the room temperature and the others were soft solids. Self-Sustaining Supramolecular Ionic Liquid Gels for Dye Adsorption

Water contamination is one of the main problems of modern society, and scientific research is continuously involved in identifying solutions able to preserve this valuable source. In this context, we characterized novel ionogels formed by organic salts with different anions. In particular, they show self-strengthening behavior, a quite unusual property for supramolecular gels, and they also exhibit a good load-bearing capacity. These ionogels are able to remove cationic dyes from wastewater. Thanks to their properties, they can be used in different apparatuses like dialysis membranes and as loading in adsorption columns. Membrane potential dye imaging of ventromedial hypothalamus neurons from adult mice to study glucose sensing

Studies of neuronal activity are often performed using neurons from rodents less than 2 months of age due to the technical difficulties associated with increasing connective tissue and decreased neuronal viability that occur with age. Here, we describe a methodology for the dissociation of healthy hypothalamic neurons from adult-aged mice. The ability to study neurons from adult-aged mice allows the use of disease models that manifest at a later age and might be more developmentally accurate for certain studies. Removal of Brilliant Green Dye from Water Using Ficus benghalensis Tree Leaves as an Efficient Biosorbent

The presence of dyes in water stream is a major environmental problem that affects aquatic and human life negatively. Therefore, it is essential to remove dye from wastewater before its discharge into the water bodies. In this study, Banyan (Ficus benghalensis, F. benghalensis) tree leaves, a low-cost biosorbent, were used to remove brilliant green (BG), a cationic dye, from an aqueous solution. Batch model experiments were carried out by varying operational parameters, such as initial concentration of dye solution, contact time, adsorbent dose, and pH of the solution, to obtain optimum conditions for removing BG dye. Halogen bonding—a key step in charge recombination of the dye-sensitized solar cell

The halogen bonding between [Ru(dcbpy)(2)(SCN)(2)] dye and I(2) molecule has been studied. The ruthenium complex forms a stable [Ru(dcbpy)(2)(SCN)(2)]···I(2)·4(CH(3)OH) adduct via S···I interaction between the thiocyanate ligand and the I(2) molecule. The adduct can be seen as a model for one of the key intermediates in the regeneration cycle of the oxidized dye by the I(-)/I(3)(-) electrolyte in dye sensitized solar cells.

Effects of Dissolved Organic Material on Binding and Toxicokinetics of Pyrene in the Waterflea Daphnia magna

The binding and bioavailability of pyrene was studied in the laboratory in two humic fresh waters and in a reference water without dissolved organic material (DOM), measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The uptake of pyrene by Daphnia magna in short-term (24 h) accumulation experiments was fitted to a first-order rate-kinetic equation to calculate simultaneous uptake and elimination rates. The partition coefficients of pyrene to DOC (KDOC) were 37.1 x 103 in Pielisjoki River (9.4 mg DOC L(-1)), and 34.9 x 103 in Lake Kontiolampi (17.4 mg DOC L(-1)) waters, indicating similar binding affinities of pyrene for both humic waters. Iodine hyperfine structure and absolute frequency measurements at 565, 576, and 585nm

Abstract The hyperfine structure splittings of the P(10)14-1, R(15)14-1, and R(99)15-1 transitions at 585 nm, P(62)17-1 at 576 nm, and P(80)21-1 at 565 nm in 127 I 2 are measured by heterodyne spectroscopy using two dye lasers. In addition, the absolute frequencies of the hyperfine components P(10)14-1 a 15 and P(80)21-1 a 10 are determined using a self-referenced frequency comb. These frequencies are used in an experiment testing relativistic time dilation by laser spectroscopy on a fast ion beam.
