Precision measurement of two iodine lines at 585 nm and 549 nm

1993

The transition frequencies of thei-component of the R(99)15-1 and thew-component of the R(85)26-0 transition in the B-X system of molecular127I2 have been determined with an overall relative standard uncertainty of 1.3 · 10−10. For this purpose a commercial linear dye laser has been modified and stabilized to the corresponding iodine line. This dye laser serves as a transportable frequency standard which is compared with the wavelength standards of the PTB. The evaluation of an experiment for testing special relativity at the test storage ring (TSR) in Heidelberg is based on the precision of the reported interferometric wavelength comparison.

Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source - Off-line tests at TRIUMF

2004

Resonance ionization laser ion sources (RILIS) developed into the most powerful tool for radioactive ion beam production at on-line facilities, as they provide a selective ionization process with inherent suppression of unwanted isobaric contaminations at the ion source. While typical tunable laser systems for these applications are based on dye lasers, we developed an all solid state laser system which consists of three pulsed titanium:sapphire (ti:sa) lasers pumped by a single high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser. Each ti:sa laser provides up to 2.5 W average output power at 12 kHz repetition rate in the wavelength region of 700-950 nm with optional frequency doubling in BBO crystals. This l…

Development of a laser ion source at IGISOL

2005

FURIOS, the Fast Universal laser IOn Source, is under development at the IGISOL (Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line) mass separator facility in Jyvaskyla, Finland. This new laser ion source will combine a state-of-the-art solid state laser system together with a dye laser system, for the selective and efficient production of exotic radioactive species without compromising the universality and fast release inherent in the IGISOL system. The motivation for, and development of, this ion source is discussed in relation to the programme of research ongoing at this mass separator facility.

Electric field induced hyperfine level-crossings in (nD)Cs at two-step laser excitation: experiment and theory

2005

The pure electric field level-crossing of m_F Zeeman sublevels of hyperfine F levels at two-step laser excitation was described theoretically and studied experimentally for the nD_3/2 states in Cs with n = 7,9, and 10, by applying a diode laser in the first 6S_1/2 to 6P_3/2 step and a diode or dye laser for the second 6P_3/2 to nD_3/2 step. Level-crossing resonance signals were observed in the nD_3/2 to 6P_1/2 fluorescence. A theoretical model was developed to describe quantitatively the resonance signals by correlation analysis of the optical Bloch equations in the case when an atom simultaneously interacts with two laser fields in the presence of an external dc electric field. The simulat…

Modification of Plasma Membrane Organization in Tobacco Cells Elicited by Cryptogein

2014

Abstract Lipid mixtures within artificial membranes undergo a separation into liquid-disordered and liquid-ordered phases. However, the existence of this segregation into microscopic liquid-ordered phases has been difficult to prove in living cells, and the precise organization of the plasma membrane into such phases has not been elucidated in plant cells. We developed a multispectral confocal microscopy approach to generate ratiometric images of the plasma membrane surface of Bright Yellow 2 tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) suspension cells labeled with an environment sensitive fluorescent probe. This allowed the in vivo characterization of the global level of order of this membrane, by which w…

In Search of Pathogens: Transcriptome-Based Identification of Viral Sequences from the Pine Processionary Moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa)

2015

Thaumetopoea pityocampa (pine processionary moth) is one of the most important pine pests in the forests of Mediterranean countries, Central Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Apart from causing significant damage to pinewoods, T. pityocampa occurrence is also an issue for public and animal health, as it is responsible for dermatological reactions in humans and animals by contact with its irritating hairs. High throughput sequencing technologies have allowed the fast and cost-effective generation of genetic information of interest to understand different biological aspects of non-model organisms as well as the identification of potential pathogens. Using these technologies, we have o…

Electrochemical Abatement of Organic Pollutants in Continuous-Reaction Systems through the Assembly of Microfluidic Cells in Series

2015

The electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated by organic pollutants was performed under a continuous mode by using, for the first time, various micro-electrochemical cells in series. A synthetic solution of acid orange 7 (AO7), a largely used azoic dye, was chosen as model wastewater. Both the electro-Fenton (EF) method with a cheap compact graphite cathode and electrochemical oxidation (EO) at a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode were used. EO gave higher abatement of total organic carbon (TOC), but drastically higher energetic consumptions than EF. It is worth mentioning that very different operating conditions were set for EF and EO to optimize their performances. The utilization…

Maya Blue as a nanostructured polyfunctional hybrid organic–inorganic material: the need to change paradigms

2009

Maya Blue, an ancient nanostructured organic–inorganic hybrid material resulting from the attachment of indigo, a natural dye, to a phyllosilicate clay, palygorskite, has received considerable attention of late. Despite intensive research, several aspects remain unsolved, in particular the nature of the indigo–palygorskite association. Recent results suggest that the Maya Blue pigment is a complex system in which different topological isomers of various indigoid molecules attached to the palygorskite matrix coexist.
