Modular Paradigm for Composites: Modeling Hydrothermal Degradation of Glass Fibers

Fiber-reinforced composite materials are often used in structural applications in humid, marine, and offshore environments. Superior mechanical properties are compromised by environmental ageing and hydrolytic degradation. Glass fibers are the most broadly used type of fiber reinforcement to date. However, they are also most severely affected by environmental degradation. This paper discusses the impact of both standardization and quality testing of dyes and stains in biology and medicine. After the brief review of why standardized dyes and strains are not presently available commercially, two types of testing and ways of improving dye quality are described. National or international organizations could be established to define standardization of dyes and stains. Cryopreservation of MHC Multimers: Recommendations for Quality Assurance in Detection of Antigen Specific T Cells

Fluorescence-labeled peptide-MHC class I multimers serve as ideal tools for the detection of antigen-specific T cells by flow cytometry, enabling functional and phenotypical characterization of specific T cells at the single cell level. While this technique offers a number of unique advantages, MHC multimer reagents can be difficult to handle in terms of stability and quality assurance. Alkoxy-styryl DCDHF fluorophores

A photostable dicyanomethylenedihydrofuran fluorophore which contains electron-donating alkoxy groups is described. This chromophore is highly environmentally-sensitive, which is a remarkable property for a fluorescent reporter. Its light excitation also enables, in low viscous solvents, the formation of dark states whose radical or triplet nature is ruled out.

A complementary laser system for ISOLDE RILIS

The Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) is a powerful tool for efficient and selective production of radioactive ion beams at Isotope Separator On Line (ISOL) facilities. To avoid isobaric background, highly selective stepwise resonant ionization is applied, using up to three different laser wavelengths. Due to their advantages in terms of stability and reliability, an all solid-state titanium:sapphire (Ti:Sa) system is used or is planned to be installed at the majority of on-line facilities worldwide. Such an all solid-state Ti:Sa laser system is going to be installed at the ISOLDE RILIS at CERN alongside the well-established dye laser system.

Analytical control of photocatalytic treatments: degradation of a sulfonated azo dye

The degradation of Methyl Orange (C(14)H(14)N(3)SO(3)Na), chosen as a model sulfonated azo dye, was investigated in aqueous solutions containing suspended polycrystalline TiO(2) particles under irradiation with simulated sunlight. The dye disappearance and the formation of the mineralization end products were monitored; the formation of the main transient intermediates was also examined in detail. Particular attention was devoted to the identification and to the evolution of fragments retaining the chromophoric group. Two distinct Ca2+ influx pathways activated by the bradykinin B2 receptor.

The hormone-induced depletion of cellular Ca stores provides a signal for the Ca2+ influx into electrically non-excitable cells; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Therefore, we analyzed bradykinin-activated Ca2+ influx into human foreskin fibroblast cells, HF-15, by fura-2 and 45Ca labeling to discriminate between Ca2+ influx into the fura-sensitive compartment and Ca uptake into fura-insensitive Ca stores. Bradykinin-activated CaZt influx into the fura-sensitive compartment was blocked by inhibitors of NO synthases. Random Lasing of Rhodamine 6G Solution Containing TiO2:Silica Core:Shell Nanoparticles

Toward oxygen binding curves of single respiratory proteins

Oxygen binding curves of single molecules promise to discriminate between different models describing cooperativity because load distributions are accessible. Individual tarantula hemocyanins could be detected by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy using intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence as sensor of bound oxygen. However, imaging of immobilized proteins was not possible due to fast photo-bleaching. It is shown that tetra-methyl-carboxy-rhodamine (TAMRA), commonly used as a fluorescence label in single-molecule spectroscopy, can also be applied to monitor bound oxygen. The dye's fluorescence is quenched due to Förster energy transfer to the oxygenated active sites of hemocyanin.
