Die Bedeutung anderer Fremdsprachen als Englisch ist in Finnland in den letzten Jahrzenten kontinuierlich gesunken. Als besonders drastisch ist der Rückgang von Deutschlernern an finnischen Schulen einzuschätzen. Die vorliegende Studie ist Teil des Projekts Deutsch als Verkehrssprache in Finnland, das auf die Untersuchung der Rolle des Deutschen in akademischen und wirtschaftlichen Kontexten in Finnland abzielt. Um die Meinungen von Studierenden an finnischen Universitäten zu Mehrsprachigkeit und Rolle des Deutschen zu untersuchen, wurde 2008 eine Online-Umfrage unter 20400 Studierenden der Universitäten Jyväskylä und Tampere sowie der Technischen Universität Tampere durchgeführt.
