Networked Bio-Inspired Evolutionary Dynamics on a Multi-Population

2019

We consider a multi-population, represented by a network of groups of individuals. Every player of each group can choose between two options, and we study the problem of reaching consensus. The dynamics not only depend on the dynamics within the group, but they also depend on the topology of the network, so neighboring groups influence individuals as well. First, we develop a mathematical model of this networked bio-inspired evolutionary behavior and we study its steady-state. We look at the special case where the underlying network topology is a regular and unweighted graph and show that the steady-state is a consensus equilibrium. A sufficient condition for exponential stability is given.…

On stability of linear dynamic systems with hysteresis feedback

2020

The stability of linear dynamic systems with hysteresis in feedback is considered. While the absolute stability for memoryless nonlinearities (known as Lure's problem) can be proved by the well-known circle criterion, the multivalued rate-independent hysteresis poses significant challenges for feedback systems, especially for proof of convergence to an equilibrium state correspondingly set. The dissipative behavior of clockwise input-output hysteresis is considered with two boundary cases of energy losses at reversal cycles. For upper boundary cases of maximal (parallelogram shape) hysteresis loop, an equivalent transformation of the closed-loop system is provided. This allows for the appli…

Friction Model for Tool/Work Material Contact Applied to Surface Integrity Prediction in Orthogonal Cutting Simulation

2017

Abstract Tribological behavior at both tool/chip and tool/work material interfaces should be highly considered while simulating the machining process. In fact, it is no longer accurate to suppose one independent constant friction coefficient at the tool/chip interface, since in reality it depends on the applied contact conditions, including the sliding velocity and pressure. The contact conditions at both above mentioned interfaces may affect the thermal and mechanical phenomena and consequently the surface integrity predictions. In this article, the influence of contact conditions (sliding velocity) on the tribological behavior of uncoated tungsten carbide tool against OFHC copper work mat…

Aluminium sheet metal scrap recycling through friction consolidation

2019

Abstract In the last decades, several direct-recycling techniques have been developed and investigated in order to avoid material remelting, typical of the conventional aluminum alloys recycling processes. Moreover, the remelting step for aluminum recycling is affected by permanent material losses. Solid-state recycling processes have proven to be a suitable strategy to face such issues. Friction Consolidation is an innovative solid state-recycling technology developed for metal chips. During the process, a rotating die is plunged into a hollow chamber containing the material to be processed. The work of friction forces decaying into heat soften the material and, together with the stirring …

Identification of Objects Based on Generalized Amplitude-Phase Images Statistical Models

2017

The article presents the dynamical objects identification technology based on statistical models of amplitude-phase images (APIm) – multidimensional data arrays (semantic models) and statistical correlation analysis methods using the generalized discrete Hilbert transforms (DHT) – 2D Hilbert (Foucault) isotropic (HTI), anisotropic (HTA) and total transforms – AP-analysis (APA) to calculate the APIm. The identified objects are modeled with 3D airplanes templates rotated in space around the center of Cartesian coordinate system. The DHT domain system of coordinates displaying the plane projections (2D flat images) remains to be space-invariant. That causes the anisotropic properties of APIm a…

Opinion dynamics in social networks through mean field games

2016

Emulation, mimicry, and herding behaviors are phenomena that are observed when multiple social groups interact. To study such phenomena, we consider in this paper a large population of homogeneous social networks. Each such network is characterized by a vector state, a vector-valued controlled input, and a vector-valued exogenous disturbance. The controlled input of each network aims to align its state to the mean distribution of other networks' states in spite of the actions of the disturbance. One of the contributions of this paper is a detailed analysis of the resulting mean-field game for the cases of both polytopic and $mathcal L_2$ bounds on controls and disturbances. A second contrib…

A Hybrid Control Strategy for Quadratic Boost Converters with Inductor Currents Estimation

2020

International audience; This paper deals with a control strategy for a DC-DC quadratic boost converter. In particular, a hybrid control scheme is proposed to encompass a control law and an observer for the estimation of the system states, based only on the measurements of the input and output voltages. Differently from classical control methods, where the controller is designed from a small-signal model, here the real model of the system is examined without considering the average values of the discrete variables. Using hybrid dynamical system theory, asymptotic stability of a neighborhood of the equilibrium point is established, ensuring practical stability of the origin, which contains es…

Performance and feasibility of biotrickling filtration in the control of styrene industrial air emissions

2017

Abstract The performance and feasibility of a pilot unit of biotrickling filter (BTF) for the treatment of industrial emissions polluted by styrene was investigated for one year at a fiber reinforced plastic industrial site. The pilot unit was packed with a structured material with a volume of 0.6 m3. Monitoring results have shown successful treatment of the industrial styrene emissions working at empty bed residence times (EBRT) between 31 and 66 s. The best performance was obtained after 300 days when a more stable biofilm had been developed, obtaining the highest elimination capacity of 18.8 g m−3 h−1 (removal efficiency of 75.6%) working at 31 s of EBRT. In addition, a photocatalytic re…

A numerical model for pre-monitoring design of historical colonnade courtyards: The case study of chiaramonte palace in palermo

2016

This paper proposes a numerical model that can be used for theoretical and experimental dynamic characterization of historical colonnade courtyards. Such an architectural element appears often in buildings of historical heritage and, especially under seismic excitation, it represents the most vulnerable structural part. Therefore, it is very important to have reliable as well as simple models available for vulnerability analysis, to evaluate different reinforcing systems if needed, or to plan dynamic characterization tests or monitoring campaigns, as in the present case. Chiaramonte Palace, a wonderful example of the historical heritage of Palermo, is investigated as case study. Firstly, a …

Applying System Dynamics Modelling to Strategic Management: A Literature Review

2016

System dynamics (SD) has been proved to be a useful methodology to support both understanding and learning processes of complex systems and phenomena. Since its origin, SD has been successfully applied to many different fields of studies (e.g. climate change, physics, engineering, environmental sciences, economics, management, etc.). Among these, strategic management (SM) has a particular relevance as testified by several streams of research that originate from the combination between SD modelling and SM. The aim of this paper is to explore and discuss the theoretical and empirical development of SD in the SM field through a systematic analysis of the literature in order to highlight the ma…
