rTMS of the prefrontal cortex in the treatment of chronic migraine: a pilot study

2004

A recent fMRI study showed that dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) exerts an inhibitory control on pain pathways in humans. We investigated whether high-frequency rTMS over left DLPFC could ameliorate chronic migraine. Treatment consisted of 12 rTMS sessions, delivered in alternate days over left DLPFC. Sham rTMS was used as placebo. Eleven patients were randomly assigned to the rTMS (n=6) or to the placebo (n=5) treatment. Measures of attack frequency, headache index, number of abortive medications (outcome measures) were recorded in the month before, during and in the month after treatment. Subjects treated by rTMS showed a significant reduction of the outcome measures during and in t…

Precision and Bias of Target-Controlled Prolonged Propofol Infusion for General Anesthesia and Sedation in Neurosurgical Patients

2018

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship, precision, and bias of a propofol target-controlled infusion (TCI) system during prolonged infusion in neurosurgical patients. We retrospectively included patients undergoing general anesthesia for elective neurosurgical removal of brain tumors and postoperative sedation in the intensive care unit over a period of 3 months. TCI of propofol (Diprifusor - Marsh model) and remifentanil were used for general anesthesia and sedation. We compared propofol blood concentration (Cmeas) measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy with predicted concentrations (Cpred) by the TCI system at 40 minutes (T0), 2 hours (T1), and 4 hours (T2) a…

Forensic microbiology applications: A systematic review.

2019

Abstract According to the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), a healthy human body contains ten times more microbes than human cells. Microbial communities colonize different organs of the body, playing fundamental roles both in human health and disease. Despite the vast scientific knowledge of the role of microbial communities in a living body, little is known at present about microbial changes occurring after death, thus leading many authors to investigate the composition of the thanatomicrobiome and its potential applications in the forensic field. The aim of the following review is to provide a general overview of the advances of postmortem microbiology research, mainly focusing on the role…

Parafoveal versus foveal N400s dissociate spreading activation from contextual fit.

2009

Using concurrent electroencephalogram and eye movement measures to track natural reading, this study shows that N400 effects reflecting predictability are dissociable from those owing to spreading activation. In comparing predicted sentence endings with related and unrelated unpredicted endings in antonym constructions ('the opposite of black is white/yellow/nice'), fixation-related potentials at the critical word revealed a predictability-based N400 effect (unpredicted vs. predicted words). By contrast, event-related potentials time locked to the last fixation before the critical word showed an N400 only for the nonrelated unpredicted condition (nice). This effect is attributed to a parafo…

Characteristics of sourdoughs and baked pizzas as affected by starter culture inoculums

2019

Previous investigations on pizza dough lactic acid bacteria (LAB) revealed that facultative heterofermentative species (FHS) were more represented than obligate heterofermentative species (OHS) within the Lactobacillus genus. Thus, the main hypothesis of this work was that facultative and obligate heterofermentative Lactobacillus species can impact differently the appreciation of baked pizza. The performances of different Lactobacillus, including L. sanfranciscensis, L. brevis and L. rossiae among OHS and L. plantarum, L. graminis and L. curvatus among FHS were tested in single or multiple combinations during pizza production. The values of pH, total titratable acidity and LAB levels indica…

Influence of different types of astigmatism on visual acuity

2016

[EN] Purpose To investigate the change in visual acuity (VA) produced by different types of astigmatism (on the basis of the refractive power and position of the principal meridians) on normal accommodating eyes. Methods The lens induced method was employed to simulate a set of 28 astigmatic blur conditions on different healthy emmetropic eyes. Additionally, 24 values of spherical defocus were also simulated on the same eyes for comparison. VA was measured in each case and the results, expressed in logMAR units, were represented against of the modulus of the dioptric power vector (blur strength). Results LogMAR VA varies in a linear fashion with increasing astigmatic blur, being the slope o…

Who is looking at me? The cone of gaze widens in social phobia

2011

Gaze direction is an important cue that regulates social interactions and facilitates joint attention. Although humans are very accurate in determining gaze directions in general, they have a surprisingly liberal criterion for the presence of mutual gaze. Using an established psychophysical task that required observers to adjust the eyes of a virtual head to the margins of the area of mutual gaze, we examined whether the resulting cone of gaze is altered in people with social phobia. It turned out that during presence of a second virtual person, the gaze cone's width was specifically enlarged in patients with social phobia as compared to healthy controls. The size of this effect was correla…

Neural Correlates of Visual versus Abstract Letter Processing in Roman and Arabic Scripts

2013

In alphabetic orthographies, letter identification is a critical process during the recognition of visually presented words. In the present experiment, we examined whether and when visual form influences letter processing in two very distinct alphabets (Roman and Arabic). Disentangling visual versus abstract letter representations was possible because letters in the Roman alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar in lowercase and uppercase forms (e.g., c-C vs. r-R) and letters in the Arabic alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar, depending on their position within a word (e.g., [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text] vs. [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text]). We employed a…
