Deine Sonia: A Reading from a Burned Letter by Reinhard Bölling, Translated by D. E. Rowe

2018

It was in January 1990. Finally, just two months after the Berlin Wall had fallen, I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Djursholm, a small town just northeast of Stockholm. The palatial villa that today houses the Institute is the former home of Gosta Mittag-Leffler (1846–1927), and on entering its doorway I felt as if I had taken a step back into the world in which he lived. For me, the Institute’s single greatest attraction lay in its archival holdings, and particularly the extensive correspondence that linked Mittag-Leffler with many of the era’s leading mathematicians. A former student of Karl Weierstrass (1815–1897), Mittag-Leffler sought to pres…

Experiences of radioactivity measurement in various environmental samples

2013

An overview on our activity of environmental radioactivity measurement is reported. Radionuclide concentration have been evaluated in the particulate air, soils and rocks, drinking and surface water, wastewater, marine sediments and so on. Most of radionuclide concentration evaluation were performed using facilities of DEIM Department of Palermo University. In particular, particulate collection was performed by suction of atmospheric air through 45x45 Sofiltra-Poelman HYN-75 (Bleu type) cellulose filter paper using a high-volume air sampler located on the roof of our department building (20 m above ground-level), located within an undisturbed large park area in the city of Palermo (latitude…

Influences of landscape structure on diversity of beetles associated with bracket fungi in Brazilian Atlantic Forest

2015

Abstract Brazilian Atlantic forest ecosystem is a global biodiversity hotspot. We studied the effects of area, connectivity and habitat quality of conservation areas on the diversity of beetles associated with basidiomes of wood-decaying fungi. Moreover, we analyzed the beetles' composition to verify what the process that produces the differentiation between the patches (β diversity). Species richness of fungivorous beetles increased the larger the area and the better the connectivity of conservation areas; however, neither area nor connectivity had an independent effect on beetle richness. Furthermore, the fungivorous beetle community was affected by the reduction in resource availability …

Verso una dimensione narrativa delle mappe

2021

Between the idea and the construction of the architecture the drawing plays a central role to connect the different protagonists of a project. It involves the community by envisaging unprecedented perspectives. Writing is useful to explicit the graphics and establish a new order in the design reasoning. The relationships between signs and meanings multiply in recent information systems in which it seems possible to conclude a lot (thanks to numerical and spatial data) but sometimes a synthesis is missing though that synthesis is fundamental to create new physical experiences. For the exploration of the use of different architectural languages and for the push towards the project rather than a sterile cataloging the case of the Piano Programma for the historic center of Palermo (Giuseppe Samonà Giancarlo De Carlo Umberto Di Cristina Anna Maria Sciarra Borzí 1979-82) reveals to be ambitious. Giuseppe Samonà integrates the classical representation based on Monge's projections with photographs and iconic drawings associating signs with a linguistic-structural communication capable of expressing the relationships between the parts at the basis of a morphological approach to the plan. The graphic story ("second language") of the urban fabric has creative implications expressed by images and annotations ("first language") useful for decoding them. Since the plan focuses on the potential of a storytelling that orients the imagination of its readers (designers citizens politicians) it can contribute to the study titled "B4R– BRANDING 4 RESILIENCE - Tourist infrastructure as a tool to enhance small villages by drawing resilient communities and new open habitats” as a starting point for the mapping in which GIS analysis and multidisciplinary data (geometric topological and quantitative) relating to some villages of the internal Sicily shall translate into a new architectural urban and landscape quality.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Technological screening and application of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated from fermented honey by-products for the sensory improvement of …

2021

“Spiritu re fascitrari” is a Sicilian alcoholic beverage obtained through distillation of a decoction of spontaneously fermented honey by-products (FHP). The production process often leads to sensorial defects due to the unstable alcoholic fermentation. The objective of this work was to select Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains from FHP to be used as starter in decoction fermentation. Based on chemical, microbiological and technological data, from a total of 91 strains three S. cerevisae were selected for further testing to produce FHP at laboratory scale level. After FHP distillation, the analysis of volatile organic compounds showed a complex mixture of sensory active molecules, mainly alco…

A hydrodynamic water quality model for propagation of pollutants in rivers.

2010

Numerical modelling can be a useful tool to assess a receiving water body's quality state. Indeed, the use of mathematical models in river water quality management has become a common practice to show the cause-effect relationship between emissions and water body quality and to design as well as assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures. In the present study, a hydrodynamic river water quality model is presented. The model consists of a quantity and a quality sub-model. The quantity sub-model is based on the Saint Venant equations. The solution of the Saint Venant equations is obtained by means of an explicit scheme based on space-time conservation. The method considers the unificatio…

Elusive amines and cluster headache: mutational analysis of trace amine receptor cluster on chromosome 6q23.

2004

Cluster headache (CH) is characterised by unilateral pain and ipsilateral autonomic features. To date, no molecular genetic evidence has been shown for CH. Small pedigrees and low penetrance render the identification of the CH-gene quite difficult. Nonetheless the association of CH and migraine to a new class of amine, namely trace or elusive amines such as tyramine, octopamine and synephrine, has recently been demonstrated. In particular, in comparison to healthy control subjects, all these neurotransmitters have been found to be greatly elevated in CH sufferers in plasma and platelets both in active and remission periods. A cluster of gene-encoding G-protein-coupled receptors that bind an…

Application of whey of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana fermented by lactic acid bacteria as a bread biopreservative agent

2021

A total of nine isolated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from tomato and sourdough with antifungal activity were employed to revaluate the whey of Mozzarella di Bufala through the fermentation process for 72 h at 37 °C. Then, the fermented whey (BWF) was characterised and used as biopreservative in bread formulation. L. plantarum TR7 and L. plantarum TR2 strains showed average lactic acid concentration in BWF of 13.8 g L 1. Also, the bread volatile organic compounds (VOC) analysis showed an increase in hexanal, benzeneacetaldehyde, benzaldehyde and pyrazine tetramethyl when using BWF as ingredient. Moreover, the DPPH-inhibitory activity of bread with BWF extract also reflected a 33% rise in comp…

Are IL-10+ regulatory Th17 cells implicated in the sustained response to glucocorticoid treatment in patients with giant cell arteritis? Comment on t…

2013

We have read with interest the recently published paper of Espigol-Frigole et al 1 in which the authors confirmed that interleukin (IL)-17 is highly expressed in giant cell arteritis (GCA) lesions.1–3 They also demonstrated for the first time that IL-17 expression in temporal artery biopsies (TABs) was correlated with a better outcome. Among other interesting results, the identification of Foxp3+IL-17+ T cells by confocal microscopy in TAB made the authors to hypothesize that these cells could be induced regulatory T cells (Treg) that may facilitate the remission of the disease under steroid therapy. …

Stitching proteins into membranes, not sew simple

2014

Abstract Most integral membrane proteins located within the endomembrane system of eukaryotic cells are first assembled co-translationally into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) before being sorted and trafficked to other organelles. The assembly of membrane proteins is mediated by the ER translocon, which allows passage of lumenal domains through and lateral integration of transmembrane (TM) domains into the ER membrane. It may be convenient to imagine multi-TM domain containing membrane proteins being assembled by inserting their first TM domain in the correct orientation, with subsequent TM domains inserting with alternating orientations. However a simple threading model of assembly, with s…
