Calcified Spinal Meningioma: A Lurking Danger
2017
Tumors of the spine with an intradural location have an incidence ranging from 3 to 10 per 100,000 persons per year, and intradural extramedullary tumors account for two thirds of all intraspinal neoplasms. Among these, spinal meningiomas account for 25%–46% of all spinal cord tumors. They develop from the arachnoid cells that differentiate from neural crest cells and, like cerebral meningioma, they have a slow-growing behavior. Although spinal meningiomas are not uncommon, calcified spinal meningioma is rare in spinal location. Calcified meningioma manifests with extensive matrix and tends to infiltrate the surrounding structures. It exhibits a growth pattern limited by an incompletely dev…
Efficacy of Chondroitin Sulfate in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Exploring Inconsistencies in Randomized, Placebo-…
2019
Introduction There are some controversies about treatment modalities in osteoarthritis (OA), including chondroitin sulfate (CS). The objective of this study was to determine whether CS is effective at alleviating pain and improving function in patients with knee OA and to identify the factors that explain inconsistencies in clinical trial results. Methods We conducted a systematic review of randomized, placebo-controlled trials, searching the databases Medline, Cochrane central register for controlled trials and Scopus. Random effects meta-analysis was then performed, using tau2 and I2 statistics to assess heterogeneity. The pain and Lequesne index (LI) scores were expressed as standardized…

Harnessing Big Data for Communicable Tropical and Sub-Tropical Disorders: Implications From a Systematic Review of the Literature
2018
aim: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), communicable tropical and sub-tropical diseases occur solely, or mainly in the tropics, thriving in hot, and humid conditions. Some of these disorders termed as neglected tropical diseases are par- ticularly overlooked. Communicable tropical/sub-tropical diseases represent a diverse group of communicable disorders occurring in 149 countries, favored by tropical and sub-tropical conditions, affecting more than one billion people and imposing a dramatic societal and economic burden. methods: A systematic review of the extant scholarly literature was carried out, searching in PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus. The search string used included prope…
Alzheimer's disease associated with sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy in an elderly patient

Lsr2-like nucleoid-associated proteins play an important role as xenogeneic silencers (XS) of horizontally acquired genomic regions in actinobacteria. In this study, we systematically analyzed the in vivo constraints underlying silencing and counter-silencing of the Lsr2-like protein CgpS in Corynebacterium glutamicum Genome-wide analysis revealed binding of CgpS to regions featuring a distinct drop in GC profile close to the transcription start site (TSS) but also identified an overrepresented motif with multiple A/T steps at the nucleation site of the nucleoprotein complex. Binding of specific transcription factors (TFs) may oppose XS activity, leading to counter-silencing. Following a sy…
Volatile compounds produced by the ligninolytic fungus Phlebia radiata Fr. (Basidiomycetes) and influence of the strain specificity on the odorous pr…
1989
Abstract The odorous volatile compounds produced by 3 strains (out of 25 strains tested) of Phlebia radiata Fr. were investigated on six synthetic media and identified by GC-MS analysis. One of the 3 strains was odourless. Aromatic primary alcohols and a sesquiterpenic alcohol, α-bisabolol, were the most abundant metabolites for both of the other strains, which exhibited similar flavours and a similar gas chromatographic profile.
Discovering unbounded unions of regular pattern languages from positive examples
1996
The problem of learning unions of certain pattern languages from positive examples is considered. We restrict to the regular patterns, i.e., patterns where each variable symbol can appear only once, and to the substring patterns, which is a subclass of regular patterns of the type xαy, where x and y are variables and α is a string of constant symbols. We present an algorithm that, given a set of strings, finds a good collection of patterns covering this set. The notion of a ‘good covering’ is defined as the most probable collection of patterns likely to be present in the examples, assuming a simple probabilistic model, or equivalently using the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle. 09-P102 Somitogenesis and development of primary motor neurons: The role of the homeobox uncx4.1
2009
The gene uncx4.1 is a paired-type homeobox transcription factor, expressed during zebrafish embryonic development in branchial arches, somites, CNS and pronephric ducts. In particular, the expression at the somite level is detectable from 5ss stage and becomes progressively posteriorly and ventrally restricted to the presumptive myoblast cells in later stages. Interestingly, the progressive restriction of uncx4.1 activity anticipates and accompanies the appearance of the first outgrowing primary motor axons. Indeed, after uncx4.1 expression is not detected anymore in medial somitic cells, a ventrally projecting CaP motor axons emerge from the ventro-lateral spinal cord. In relation with mus…
