First results of iButton® loggers and infrared camera application inside a greenhouse

2017

Greenhouse microclimate management (temperature, relative humidity) plays a very important role in order to optimize the production process improving pest and disease control, irrigation and energy efficiency. The systems mostly used in Sicily (south Italy) to record the ambient parameters are made up of fixed measuring stations able to give useful information about the climate inside the greenhouse limited to some pre-fixed points. In this study we texted a novel system made up of humidity and temperature data loggers (iButton®) placed inside a greenhouse. The iButton® temperature/humidity logger (DS1923) is a rugged, self-sufficient system that measures temperature and/or humidity and r…

Sicilian potential biogas production

2013

This study is aimed at predicting the Sicilian potential biogas production, using the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW), animal manure and food industry by-products, in a region where only one biogas plant using MSW and one co-digestion plant are nowadays available. The statistical data about OFMSW, the number of animals bred in medium and large farms and the amounts of by-products of food processing industries were evaluated, in order to compute the Sicilian potential biogas and energy production. The OFMSW produced in Sicily, that is 0.8 million tons ca. per year (37% of MSW), could be used in a bio-reactor, together with other raw materials, for Anaerobic Digestion (AD) p…

Performances Comparison for a Rotating Shaft Suspended by 4-Axis Radial Active Magnetic Bearings via 𝜇 -Synthesis, Loop-Shaping Design, and Sub ( 𝐻…

2011

The control systems applied on active magnetic bearing are several. A perfect levitation is characterized by maintaining the operating point condition that is characterized by the center of stator coincident with the geometric center of shaft. The first controller implemented for this purpose is PID controller that is characterized by an algorithm that leads the amplifier to produce control current until the operating point condition is not reached, this is obtained by an integration operator. The effect of an integrator is essential but not necessary for a centered levitation for example in the robust control characterized by a dynamic model depended on plant of system so that it depends o…

Integrated Approach to Part Scheduling and Inspection Policies for a Job Shop Manufacturing System

2007

The quality of a product greatly depends on the quality of its components. This requires that manufacturing specifications have to be met in the manufacturing environment and as a consequence inspection stations are present in many manufacturing systems and inspection policies must be adopted. One problem, which has been widely investigated, concerns the detection of the inspection points in the hypothesis that the action to be taken is known when a defective part is detected. If different jobs are to be produced, then operation scheduling becomes yet another complex problem needing to be solved. And while the problem of scheduling has received a great amount of attention from researchers, …

Analysis of the accuracy of fiber-optic strain transducers installed by using composite smart patches

2015

The aim of this work is to investigate the accuracy of fiber-optic strain transducer related to the incomplete load transmission that can occur on composite smart patches used as base support for the installation of such transducer, commonly used for structural monitoring of concrete elements. In detail, since the dimensions of the transducer are generally very small compared to those of the structural element being monitored, attention is given not to the global reinforcement effect, which occurs when the transducer alters the entire strain field of the transversal section of the monitored element, but rather to the so-called local reinforcement effect, which is due to an incomplete load …

Analysis of the maximization of wind turbine energy yield using a continuously variable transmission system

2017

Abstract In this paper, an analytic study of the subject of mechanical power transmission in HAWT wind turbine has been carried out. For the most part, the study analyzes the use of continuously variable transmission (CVT) in order to allow the turbine and the electric generator to couple, allowing in turn, an unremitting transmission ratio adjustment. In low-wind sites, the design criteria suggest an oversizing of the wind turbine in order to generate adequate electrical power even at low wind speed. The proposed solution enhances the space of operating points since it allows the electric generator to release the rotational speed from the turbine one (limited due to structural integrity). …

A combined multi-criteria approach to support FMECA analyses: A real-world case

2018

[EN] The paper proposes an approach that combines reliability analyses and multi-criteria decision methods to optimize maintenance activities of complex systems. A failure mode, effects, and criticality analysts (FMECA) is initially performed and the fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) method is then applied to rank previously identified failure modes. For prioritization, failure modes are assessed against three evaluation criteria that differ from those traditionally involved in risk priority number (RPN) computation (i.e. severity, occurrence and detection). Two criteria refer to the maintenance management reflecting the operational time taken by the maintenance activity performed after the occurrence…

Finite Element Simulation of Multilayer Metal Cylinder Head Gaskets

2006

ABAQUS gasket elements are an efficient and flexible tool to study gasket applications. Nevertheless the usage of the ABAQUS gasket elements is not limited to gasket analysis, but it provides an effective improvement in structural analysis. The results point out that both the predicted contact pressure and the predicted stress distribution depend on the mesh topology. Several combinations of mesh dimension and topology are investigated. The purpose is the definition of a calculation methodology and the demonstration of the application potentiality. Complex models analysis highlights that the set methodology constitutes a very effective tool for the design and optimization of gasket, cylinde…

Error and Uncertainty Analysis of Non-Uniform Residual Stress Evaluation by Using the Ring-Core Method

2016

Like other mechanical methods used for the residual stress evaluation on a generic structural component, the Ring-Core Method (RCM) is potentially subjected to various error sources that in some particular experimental conditions can lead to significant errors and/or uncertainties on the computed residual stresses. The accuracy of the residual stresses computed by the RCM can be improved by a proper error analysis that allows the user to correct the systematic errors, as well as to evaluate the remaining stress uncertainty due to the random errors. Therefore, in order to give a contribution to the accuracy of the RCM, in the present work the list of the main error sources is presented and t…

Noise risk assessment in a bottling line of a modern Sicilian winery

2013

In wine industry, bottling is a phase of the production cycle characterized by high levels of noise mostly due to repeated collisions between the bottles. In Italy the Law Decree 81/2008 defined the requirements for assessing and managing noise risk, identifying a number of procedures to be adopted at different noise levels to limit workers exposure. This study aims at evaluating the equivalent and peak noise level inside the bottling plant area of a modern Sicilian winery. In particular, the influence of the working capacity (number of bottles produced per hour) on noise levels was evaluated. We considered three test conditions: T1 with working capacity of 4,000 bottles per hour, T2 with w…
