This paper considers the probability of fracture in a system in which a material travels supported by rollers. The moving material is subjected to longitudinal tension for which deterministic and stochastic models are studied. In the stochastic model, the tension is described by a multi-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The material is assumed to have initial cracks perpendicular to the travelling direction, and a stochastic counting process describes the occurrence of cracks in the longitudinal direction of the material. We present a new class of binary words: the prefix normal words. They are defined by the property that for any given length $k$, no factor of length $k$ has more $a$'s than the prefix of the same length. These words arise in the context of indexing for jumbled pattern matching (a.k.a. permutation matching or Parikh vector matching), where the aim is to decide whether a string has a factor with a given multiplicity of characters, i.e., with a given Parikh vector. Józef Warszewicz (1812–1864) was one of the first Polish naturalists to explore the flora of the tropical New World. During two expeditions to Central and South America (1844–1850 and 1850–1853) he collected and delivered to Europe up to twenty thousand plant specimens.
