Fragment- and negative image-based screening of phosphodiesterase 10A inhibitors.

2019

A novel virtual screening methodology called fragment- and negative image-based (F-NiB) screening is introduced and tested experimentally using phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) as a case study. Potent PDE10A-specific small-molecule inhibitors are actively sought after for their antipsychotic and neuroprotective effects. The F-NiB combines features from both fragment-based drug discovery and negative image-based (NIB) screening methodologies to facilitate rational drug discovery. The selected structural parts of protein-bound ligand(s) are seamlessly combined with the negative image of the target's ligand-binding cavity. This cavity- and fragment-based hybrid model, namely its shape and electr…

Development of Predictive Retention-Activity Relationship Models of Barbiturates by Micellar Liquid Chromatography

2000

The need to get a tool for biological parameters estimation of new compounds for clinical applications, supports the postulation of predictive models as an alternative to conventional classical assays being no necessary the use of experimentation in animals. Our main aim in this work is to determine correlations between the logarithm of capacity factors and preclinical pharmacology and therapeutic efficacy parameters of barbiturates. The predictive and interpretative capability of quantitative chromatographic retention-biological activity models is supported by the fact that in adequate experimental conditions the solute partitioning into chromatographic system can emulate the solute partit…

Aceclofenac versus piroxicam in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee: A double-blind controlled study

1994

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac tablets 100 mg twice daily with piroxicam tablets 20 mg once daily in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee or gonarthritis. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study of 3 months' duration was conducted in patients with gonarthritis diagnosed according to the World Health Organization criteria. A total of 212 patients were recruited; 205 patients fully complied with the inclusion-exclusion criteria. Of these, 103 received aceclofenac and 102 received piroxicam. Fourteen patients in the aceclofenac group and 12 patients in the piroxicam group who failed to complete the 3-month treatment …

Reconstruction of an Accretion Disk Image in AU Mon from CoRoT Photometry

2011

AbstractThe long-period binary system AU Mon was photometrically observed on-board the CoRoT satellite in a continuous run of almost 60 days long which has covered almost 5 complete cycles. Unprecedented sub milimag precision of CoRoT photometry reveals all complexity of its light variations in this, still active mass-transfer binary system. We present images of an accretion disk reconstructed by eclipse mapping, and an optimization of intensity distribution along disk surface. Time resolution and accurate CoRoT photometric measurements allow precise location of spatial distribution of ‘hot’ spots on the disk, and tracing temporal changes in their activity. Clumpy disk structure is similar …

The BeppoSAX 0.1-100 keV Spectrum of the X-Ray Pulsar 4U 1538-52

2001

We report the results of temporal and spectral analysis performed on the X-ray pulsar 4U 1538-52 observed by BeppoSAX. We obtained a new estimate of the spin period of the neutron star P=528.24 \pm 0.01 s (corrected for the orbital motion of the X-ray source): the source is still in the spin-up state, as since 1988. The pulse profile is double peaked, although significant variations of the relative intensity of the peaks with energy are present. The broad band (0.12-100 keV) out-of-eclipse spectrum is well described by an absorbed power law modified by a high energy cutoff at \sim 16 keV (e-folding energy \sim 10 keV) plus an iron emission line at \sim 6.4 keV. A cyclotron line at \sim 21 k…

Eclipsed X-ray flares in binary stars: geometrical constraints on the flare's location and size

2007

The observation of eclipses during X-rays flares taking place in active cool stars binaries allows us to calculate the position and size of the flares. This information cannot be derived by analyzing the decay of the flares, a frequently used approach in the literature that requires the assumption of a physical model. We make use of the eclipsing light curve to constrain the set of possible solutions, from the geometrical point of view, in two flares of Algol, and one flare in VW Cep. We make use of a technique developed with the system SV Cam (i~90 deg) and generalize it to binary systems with arbitrary inclination. The method simulates all possible geometrical situations that can produce …

Messungen der Himmelsstrahlung und deren Polarisationsgrad während der Sonnenfinsternis am 15.2.1961 in Viareggio (Italien)

1961

On the occasion of the total solar eclipse in Viareggio (Italy) measurements of intensity of sky radiation and polarization have been carried out at 90 degrees vertical distance from the sun. UV-, green- and red-filters have been used. The results showed a diminution of the intensity during the eclipse of about 3 powers of ten. The sky brightness in the point 90 degrees distant during the total eclipse was similar to the brightness when sun is 7 degrees below the horizon. About one minute before the total eclipse the degree of polarization diminuished to zero. — Furthermore photos of nearly the total sky were made using two cameras with wide angle lenses.

The Heliospheric Imagers Onboard the STEREO Mission

2008

Mounted on the sides of two widely separated spacecraft, the two Heliospheric Imager (HI) instruments onboard NASA’s STEREO mission view, for the first time, the space between the Sun and Earth. These instruments are wide-angle visible-light imagers that incorporate sufficient baffling to eliminate scattered light to the extent that the passage of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) through the heliosphere can be detected. Each HI instrument comprises two cameras, HI-1 and HI-2, which have 20° and 70° fields of view and are off-pointed from the Sun direction by 14.0° and 53.7°, respectively, with their optical axes aligned in the ecliptic plane. This arrangement provides coverage over solar…

Extension of Electron Monte Carlo Dose Calculation in Eclipse to Siemens Linear Accelerators

2009

Initially, the implementation of the macro Monte Carlo (MC) method into Eclipse (Varian Medical Systems), named eMC, was carried out for Varian accelerators only. In this work eMC algorithm has been modified to allow also accurate dose calculations for electron beams for Siemens accelerators.

Absolute parameters for binary systems

1997

New light curves of the late-type binary sys- tem ZZ UMa were obtained during a uvby and H mon- itoring program on low mass eclipsing binaries, that has been carried out in a six year photometric observational program (Clement et al. 1997a, Paper I). The main goal of the program is to obtain accurate absolute parameters for stars in the low and intermediate mass range, in order to improve the Mass-Luminosity Relationship (MLR) at the end of the main sequence. This paper presents a complete analysis of the rst uvby light curves of the late-type detached eclipsing binary ZZ UMa. This binary system has been observed during eight campaigns at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain). The act…
