Parasites require synchrony with their hosts so if host timing changes with climate change, some parasites may decline and eventually go extinct. Residents and short-distance migrant hosts of the brood parasitic common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus , have advanced their phenology in response to climate change more than long-distance migrants, including the cuckoo itself. Background: We provided a comprehensive analysis of rate, pattern, and severity of early and late postoperative complications in a very large, single-institution series of locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients administered CT/RT plus radical surgery (RS). Methods: A total of 362 consecutive LACC (FIGO stage IB2-IVA) patients were submitted to RS after CT/RT at the Gynecologic Oncology Unit of the Catholic University (Rome/Campobasso). At 4 weeks after CT/RT, patients were evaluated for objective response and triaged to radical hysterectomy and pelvic ± aortic lymphadenectomy. Abstract Background The aim of this study is to report on the impact of neuromodulation to the superior hypogastric plexus in patients with bladder atonia secondary to pelvic surgery. Methods In 4 consecutive patients with bladder atonia secondary to pelvic surgery, we performed a laparoscopic implantation of a neurostimulator—LION procedure—to the entire superior hypogastric plexus. Results Of the 4 reported patients, 3 are able to partially void or empty their bladder. Paleoenvironmental context of the early Neanderthals of Poggetti Vecchi for the late middle Pleistocene of Central Italy

AbstractWork on thermal pools at Poggetti Vecchi in Grosseto, Italy, exposed an up to 3-meter-thick succession of seven sedimentary units. Unit 2 in the lower portion of the succession contained vertebrate bones, mostly of the straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, commingled with stone, bone, and wooden tools. Thermal carbonates overlying Unit 2 are radiometrically dated to the latter part of the middle Pleistocene. This time span indicates that early Neanderthals produced the human artifacts from Poggetti Vecchi. The elephant bones belong to seven individuals of different ages. A stalactite record of four relative sea-level highstands during the Middle Pleistocene Transition

International audience; Ice-sheet and sea-level fluctuations during the Early and Middle Pleistocene are as yet poorly understood. A stalactite from a karst cave in North West Sicily (Italy) provides the first evidence of four marine inundations that correspond to relative sea-level highstands at the time of the Middle Pleistocene Transition. The speleothem is located ∼97 m above mean sea level as result of Quaternary uplift. Its section reveals three marine hiatuses and a coral overgrowth that fixes the age of final marine ingression at 1.124 ± 0.2, thus making this speleothem the oldest stalactite with marine hiatuses ever studied to date. The Mediterranean Basin is characterized by a significant variability in tectonic behaviour, ranging from subsidence to uplifting. However, those coastal areas considered to be tectonically stable show coastal landforms at elevations consistent with eustatic and isostatic sea level change models. In particular, geomorphological indicators—such as tidal notches or shore platforms—are often used to define the tectonic stability of the Mediterranean coasts. We present the results of swim surveys in nine rocky coastal sectors in the central Mediterranean Sea using the Geoswim approach.
