The buffer effect of canopy-forming algae on vermetid reefs' functioning: A multiple stressor case study.

Abstract Biodiversity plays a key role for our planet by buffering ongoing and future changes in environmental conditions. We tested if canopy-forming algae enhancing biodiversity (CEB) in a Mediterranean intertidal reef ecological community could alleviate the effect of stressors (heat waves and pollution from sewage) on community metabolic rates (as expressed by oxygen consumption) used as a proxy of community functioning. CEB exerted a buffering effect related to the properties of stressor: physical-pulsing (heat wave) and chronic-trophic (sewage). The tangled cases of Deinogalerix (Late Miocene endemic erinaceid of Gargano) and Galericini (Eulipotyphla, Erinaceidae): a cladistic perspective.

The Late Miocene giant erinaceid Deinogalerix from Scontrone and Gargano (Italy) is associated with many other vertebrates in deposits of a past island, the “Abruzzo-Apulia Platform”. At Gargano, Deinogalerix is accompanied by the moderately endemized Galericini Apulogalerix. This first extensive cladistic analysis is aimed at defining the relationships of Deinogalerix with characteristic members of the tribe Galericini. The analysis was performed on a matrix of 30 characters and 19 taxa and identified some smaller clades, nested within three major ones. Se aportan nuevas citas del helecho amenazado Equisetum moorei en la Comunidad Valenciana, donde solo se conocían previamente seis localidades con presencia actual de la especie. Una de las nuevas poblaciones am­plía notablemente el área de distribución conocida en esta región, ya que la mayor parte de las localidades conocidas se concentraban en el macizo del Peñagolosa (provincia de Castellón). Se describen las características ecológicas y demográficas de las nuevas localidades en el contexto de las poblaciones previamente conocidas en la región valenciana.

Small-scale patches of detritus as habitat for invertebrates within a Zostera noltei meadow

Abstract Seagrass detritus can attract numerous invertebrates as it provides food and substrate within the meadow or in adjacent environments. Nonetheless, several factors could modify the invertebrate response to this habitat. In this study, we tested if epifaunal colonisation of Zostera noltei detritus was related to substrate availability rather than food and whether colonising assemblages were similar according to the meadow structural complexity.
