”Hyvät käytännöt ovat hyviä iästä riippumatta!”
2012
– Older Workers in the Nordic Countries (OWN) -verkoston toimesta toteutettiin 2009-2010 välisenä aikana kyselytutkimus viidessä pohjoismaassa, jossa selviteltiin työmarkkinajärjestöjen ikääntyviä työntekijöitä koskevaa politiikkaa ja käytäntöjä.
Are Intercultural Competences at the Center of Job-Market Demands ?
2020
International audience; This chapter introduces the theoretical framework upon which this study was based before going on to set out the methodology used and detail the main results found. It discusses results in the light of scientific literature on the issue and their managerial implications. With the internationalization of organizational structures, the development of intercultural competences was often considered a strategic benefit. Indeed, companies are sensitive to the cultural diversity of their worldwide branches and to the international competences developed by their employees. Through organizational internationalization, intercultural competences become strategic resources. Alth…
The 2017 PREDICT Key Facts Report: An Analysis of ICT R&D in the EU
2017
The 2017 PREDICT Key Facts Report provides a detailed analysis of the state of ICT R&D activities in the European Union. This is the tenth edition of a series that is published annually. Like the previous editions, an online version is available at: https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/predict. The PREDICT dataset 2017 is based on the latest data available from official sources (such as the Eurostat and OECD, National Accounts and R&D statistics). It also includes the novelty of backwards reconstruction of the series from 1995, which allows it to cover the period from 1995 to 2014. Therefore, it provides a long-term analysis of the EU ICT sector and its R&D, covering a whole cycle since the initial …
Adolescence Surveillance System for Obesity Prevention (ASSO) in Europe
2017
Adolescents' obesity is a major concern in our modern life that could lead to significant increase in the rate of obese future generations and consequently in the health budget. The ASSO (Adolescence Surveillance System for Obesity prevention) project in Italy is tackling this new pandemic using the new e-technology through a multi facets monitoring system on life style including food consumptions, meal patterns and habits, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, fitness and sedentariness, and biological/genetic, and socio-cultural/environmental characteristics of adolescents. The project has been recently piloted in the South of the country. This chapter summarizes the design and structure of…
POSTPONING OR REJECTING PARENTHOOD? RESULTS OF A SURVEY AMONG FEMALE ACADEMIC PROFESSIONALS
2003
The current surge in childlessness is often seen as an alternative lifestyle amidst growing pluralism and individualism. The results of this study indicate that several subgroups of childless women need to be differentiated: those who actively decide to forgo children in favour of other life pursuits and those who merely defer the decision. Both have accumulated a high degree of human capital in their education or career-building paths. Thus, the increase of a woman's time invested in education or career formation takes its toll on the time available for childrearing. A survey performed among female academics (N=193) brought to light that among childless women, many merely mean to postpone …
Childhood physical activity as a labor market investment
2020
This study examined the role of physical activity and changes in physical activity levels during childhood in long-term labor market outcomes. To address this important but under-researched theme, the study utilized data drawn from longitudinal research, the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (YFS), and from registries compiled by Statistics Finland. The study consisted of children aged 9 (n = 1565) and 15 (n = 2445) at the time their physical activity was measured. Labor market outcomes, including employment status, average employment months, and average unemployment months, were calculated from 1997 to 2010, when the participants were aged 20 to 48 years. Regression models were used…
Discrimination, work and health in immigrant populations in Spain
2009
One of the most important social phenomena in the global context is the flow of immigration from developing countries, motivated by economic and employment related issues. Discrimination can be approached as a health risk factor within the immigrant population's working environment, especially for those immigrants at greater risk from social exclusion and marginalisation. The aim of this study is to research perceptions of discrimination and the specific relationship between discrimination in the workplace and health among Spain's immigrant population. A qualitative study was performed by means of 84 interviews and 12 focus groups held with immigrant workers in five cities in Spain receivin…
Employment stability and mental health in Spain: towards understanding the influence of gender and partner/marital status
2018
Background: The growing demand for labour flexibility has resulted in decreasing employment stability that could be associated with poor mental health status. Few studies have analysed the whole of the work force in considering this association since research on flexible forms of employment traditionally analyses employed and unemployed people separately. The gender division of work, and family characteristics related to employment situation, could modify its association with mental wellbeing. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between a continuum of employment stability and mental health taking into account gender and partner/marital status. Methods: We selected 685…
Role clarity, fairness, and organizational climate as predictors of sickness absence: a prospective study in the private sector.
2005
Aims: The majority of the research on the effects of the psychosocial work environment on sickness absenteeism has focused on components of job strain and social support among public sector employees without stratification by socioeconomic status. The authors examined less-studied work-related psychosocial predictors of sickness absence in the private sector by socioeconomic status. Methods: Questionnaire data on psychosocial factors at work were used to predict the rates of recorded short (1 - 3 days), long (4 - 21 days), and very long (over 21 days) sickness absences among 3,850 white- and blue-collar male and female employees in a large-scale enterprise. Multivariate Poisson regression …
Determinants of prescription opioid use: population‐based evidence from Finland
2019
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Previous studies have shown that prescription opioid use is more common in socio-economically disadvantaged communities in the United States. This study examined the area and individual-level determinants of prescription opioid use in Finland during the period 1995-2016. DESIGN Logistic regression analysis using nation-wide data on filled opioid-related prescriptions dispensed at Finnish pharmacies and covered by National Health Insurance. Opioid consumption was linked, using personal identification codes, to population-based data maintained by Statistics Finland, which records individual background and area-level characteristics. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Working-age pop…
