Survey data regarding perceived air quality in Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, South Africa, United States before and du…

2020

The dataset deals with the air quality perceived by citizens before and during the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions in ten countries around the world: Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, South Africa and the United States. An online survey conveniently translated into Chinese, English, Italian, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese collected information regarding the perceived quality of air pollution according to a Likert scale. The questionnaire was distributed between 11-05-2020 and 31-05-2020 and 9 394 respondents took part. Both the survey and the dataset (stored in a Microsoft Excel Worksheet) are available in a public repository. The collected data offer the peo…

Estimating economic severity of Air Traffic Flow Management regulations

2021

The development of trajectory-based operations and the rolling network operations plan in European air traffic management network implies a move towards more collaborative, strategic flight planning. This opens up the possibility for inclusion of additional information in the collaborative decision-making process. With that in mind, we define the indicator for the economic risk of network elements (e.g., sectors or airports) as the expected costs that the elements impose on airspace users due to Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) regulations. The definition of the indicator is based on the analysis of historical ATFM regulations data, that provides an indication of the risk of accruing dela…

Triggering collective action for bio-energy supply chain through contract schemes

2016

This paper discusses contractual features to manage and coordinate a hypothetical bio-energy supply chain. The present study focuses on farmers operating in two Regions of Italy, namely Sicily and Campania, somewhat representative of areas with high potential of investments in new bioenergy supply value chain. Farmers were asked to choose whether to participate or not in a collective investment regulated by contract schemes. Monetary trade-offs were then computed among contract attributes. A specific questionnaire was submitted to a sample of farmers selected on the basis of their potential capability of investments. A stated preference modelling approach was implemented so that farmers cou…

Specialization of cycles and the K-theory elevator

2017

A general specialization map is constructed for higher Chow groups and used to prove a "going-up" theorem for algebraic cycles and their regulators. The results are applied to study the degeneration of the modified diagonal cycle of Gross and Schoen, and of the coordinate symbol on a genus-2 curve.

Landau's theorem and the number of conjugacy classes of zeros of characters

2021

Abstract Motivated by a 2004 conjecture by the author and J. Sangroniz, Y. Yang has recently proved that if G is solvable then the index in G of the 8th term of the ascending Fitting series is bounded in terms of the largest number of zeros in a row in the character table of G. In this note, we prove this result for arbitrary finite groups and propose a stronger form of the 2004 conjecture. We conclude the paper showing some possible ways to prove this strengthened conjecture.

Sense and sensibility: using a model to examine the relationship between public pre-school places and fertility

2019

This paper presents a stochastic dynamic mathematical model, in which a Family Policy Index (XFPI) is included to measure and compare two different models of provision of resources to support families with children from 0 to 3 years old. The main variables in this model are the XFPI, fertility, mortality, emigration and immigration rates. This mathematical model was validated in two different countries, Spain and Norway, during the 2007–2015 period. A sensitivity analysis was applied to simulate the future trend (2016–2030), examining the influence of providing public pre-school services (0 to 3 years) on (XISF). The results obtained show that these services may indeed have an influence on …

Rejoinder on: Natural Induction: An Objective Bayesian Approach

2009

Giron and Moreno. We certainly agree with Professors Giron and Moreno on the interest in sensitivity of any Bayesian result to changes in the prior. That said, we also consider of considerable pragmatic importance to be able to single out a unique, particular prior which may reasonably be proposed as the reference prior for the problem under study, in the sense that the corresponding posterior of the quantity of interest could be routinely used in practice when no useful prior information is available or acceptable. This is precisely what we have tried to do for the twin problems of the rule of succession and the law of natural induction. The discussants consider the limiting binomial versi…
