Private Pre-University Education in Romania

2014

This paper approaches private provision of pre-university education in Romania, exploring available data on the sector's size and main characteristics and evaluating the extent to which the current regulatory framework enables positive effects in terms of freedom of choice, quality, equity, and social cohesion. The paper argues that the lack of a clear strategy mixed with strict control in key areas and lax implementation of support instruments has led to private providers not being a legitimate alternative to public education.

Information Flows Across Wheat Futures Markets

2015

We study information flows across four wheat futures markets on four continents: Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE), South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX), Euronext/Liffe, and Kansas City Board of Trade (KCBT). Three main approaches have been applied: cointegration techniques, VAR analysis, and a multiple regression model proposed by Peiro, Quesada, and Uriel (1998) to study information flows among non-synchronous markets. Our results indicate that no long-run links exist among the four markets, that ZCE is by far the most endogenous market, and that Euronext/Liffe is the most exogenous one. Furthermore, the model by Peiro et al. (1998) points to KCBT as the most influential as well as the…

Collective and Cooperative Behaviour Models

2016

International audience; In modelling residential choice we cannot escape the debate about the effect of societal context on an individual’s decision-making. This debate depends on whether we set more store by the aggregate scale of society or by the individual’s decision-making. An individual-centred approach will focus on the particularities of an individual and the way her past, for example, influences her decisions.

Ageing, Gender and Leadership: A Study Based on Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

2017

Based on current research on ageing in organizations, this chapter focuses on ageing, its gendered nature, and its relations to what is valued in organizational settings in terms of careers and leadership. Stories about ageing are present in mythology, archetypes, and the societal collective unconsciousness, often followed by heroism and charismatic figures. Myths of ageing are manifold but may also represent a “Grand Story” of ageing, present for everyone as an ideal without gender or other dimensions. Using Tolkien’s mythology and Peter Jackson’s guided film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, the gendered relations between ageing, leadership, and leadership charisma are explored and interpret…

Life satisfaction and tax morale: The role of trust in government and cultural orientation

2022

Taxes are essential for a government to function correctly, because they fund public services and promote long-term growth in a country. Tax morale is a positive attitude toward taxation shaped by extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, including numerous psychological factors. However, these factors are far from completely clear and a better understanding of what drives tax morale can greatly help governments in the design of tax policies and their administration. In this paper we test the novel hypothesis that life satisfaction is one of the psychological aspects affecting tax morale. Using longitudinal data from the World Value Survey, we show that people more satisfied with their own life …

Geometry/Time Measurement/Sundials Graphical Resolution via Algorithmic and Parametric Processes

2018

Every people, in every historical period, developed methods to measure Time both at a daily scale and at a yearly scale. Some of them constructed sundials to represent the apparent trajectory of the Sun around the Earth, by using and developing tools from descriptive and projective Geometry, mainly. This subject acquired a great multidisciplinary interest since ancient times, also for Science of Representation applications. This study presents the first results of an ongoing research concerning some aspects related to Time Measurement. The geometric-spatial setting of the Sun-Earth system is described and is structured parametrically via algorithms, following the known conventions shared an…
