Evaluation of the DART 3D model in the thermal domain using satellite/airborne imagery and ground-based measurements
2011
This work provides an evaluation of the discrete anisotropy radiative transfer (DART) three-dimensional (3D) model in assessing the simulation of directional brightness temperatures (Tb) at both sensor and surface levels. Satellite imagery acquired with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), airborne imagery acquired with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) sensor and ground-based measurements collected over an agricultural area were used to evaluate the DART model at nadir views. Directional radiometric temperatures measured with a goniometric system at ground level were also used to evaluate modelling results at different view angles. The DART mod…
Offshore Assets in the Transition from ‘Traditional Business Practice’ to ‘Connected Business Eco-systems’
2020
In many industrial sectors we have already begun to see how new business ecosystems gradually emerge turning the traditional business practices upside down. Particularly within relatively conventional sectors, such as upstream oil and gas (O&G) and land-based process industry, we expect to see substantial changes in the years to come. In this paper, we elaborate on principal challenges related to major structural changes and core technology platforms for the oil industry identifying critical features and elaborating on emerging operational principles. This is based on a critical review of latest industry conditions and practices that are targeted towards the creation of new business models …

Drivers of peat accumulation rate in a raised bog: impact of drainage, climate, and local vegetation composition
2017
We used variation partitioning to assess the relative importance of drainage, climate and local vegetation composition for the development of a raised bog. As a case study we selected Teici (Teici) Bog in Latvia (north-east Europe). Explanatory variables together explained 74 % of the variation in peat accumulation and only the residue of 26 % remained unexplained. Our study showed that the local vegetation composition and dominant Sphagnum species significantly influence peat accumulation rates. The results of linear models revealed that, under natural conditions, minor drainage and even strong drainage of the peat is associated with a positive growth balance of the system. However, draina…

Biomethylation of Heavy Metals in Soil and Terrestrial Invertebrates
2009
Heavy metals play a prominent role in the lives of all organisms. They can be essential, as in the cases of iron, manganese, nickel and copper, which are needed to obtain proper enzyme conformation and reactivity. Some heavy metals are toxic to organisms, such as mercury or cadmium. Often, these metals are rarely accessible in their inorganic form. After biological transformation into organometallic compounds, they exhibit increased toxicity and penetration into animal tissue is facilitated. The alkylation mechanisms of metals (especially mercury) performed by aquatic microorganisms have been well documented. The organometallic food chain from fish to humans has also been investigated. Howe…
Toxico-resistance of Baltic amphipod species to heavy metals
2013
Benthic organisms are important components of aquatic ecosystems and have been widely used to assess environmental pollution. Being very sensitive to a wide range of toxicants amphipods are often used as test objects in eco-toxicological studies. The aim of this study was to compare toxico-resistance of various Baltic amphipod species to exposure of heavy metals. The acute toxicity (48-h LC50 and 96-h LC50) of cadmium (CdCl2), copper (CuSO4) and zinc (ZnSO4 ⋅ 7H2O) was detected experimentally, using juveniles and adults of brackish water amphipods, Monoporeia affinis, Bathyporeia pilosa, Gammarus tigrinus, Pontogammarus robustoides and the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex as test objects.…
