Diagnostic Analyses for the Study of Materials, Technique and State of Preservation of a Gilt and Painted Leather of the XVIII Century

2013

Abstract In this study we report on the restoration work for the gilded and painted leather from the Sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso di Papardura in Enna, Italy. The work started with a historical and stylistic examination of the artwork which dates back to 18th Century. The study of the leather and its decoration was deepened thanks to specific scientific analysis (such as XRF spectroscopy, Raman and SEM) in order to assure the integrity of the material during the restoration work. To this end, a diagnostic procedure was set up to provide a clear picture of constitutive materials (type of leather, silver leaf and pigments), technique, and state of preservation.

SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE RESTORATION OF SANTA CHIARA FROM THE SANTA CATERINA D’ALESSANDRIA MONASTERY IN PALERMO, ITALY

2022

The aim of this research was to assess the techniques and the materials used to realize the canvas painting Santa Chiara, from the Santa Caterina d’Alessandria Monastery and to verify the state of preservation, the possible decay processes and previous restorations. Consequently, an integrated analytical approach based on the use of non-invasive (diffused, indirect and ultraviolet light investigations) and micro-invasive techniques (optical microscopy, OM, scanning electron microscopy, SEM-EDX, Fourier- transform infrared spectroscopy FT-IR spectroscopy) were used. The oil painting on canvas dated XVI century: data suggests traditional painting technique, characterized by two priming prepar…

Mājas lapas izstrāde organizācijai TEDxRIGA

2019

Characterization of prehispanic cosmetics found in a burial of the ancient city of Teotihuacan (Mexico)

2012

The present paper reports the chemical data obtained on samples of pigmenting materials contained in 31 miniature vessels found in a burial found in Teopancazco, a multiethnic neighborhood center located in the southeastern sector of the archaeological site of Teotihuacan (Central Mexico) and the analytical protocol established for the complete characterization of these archaeological materials. For this purpose a multi-technique approach based on the combination of several non destructive and micro-destructive instrumental techniques, namely, light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy-X-ray micro-analysis (SEMe EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), voltammetry of micropart…

SEM-EDX metodes izmantošanas iespējas atmosfēras aerosolu sastāva analīzē

2021

Bakalaura darbā tiek veikta cieto daļiņu ķīmiskā satura un morfoloģisko parametru analīze, kuru papildina meteoroloģisko apstākļu un gaisa kvalitātes datu analīze, ar mērķi atšķirt atmosfēras aerosolu izcelsmes avotus. 12 ķīmisko elementu koncentrācija (C, O, Fe, Ca, Si, S, Al, Mg, Na, K, Mo, Cl) noteikta ar skenējošā elektronu mikroskopa (SEM) un rentgenstaru enerģijas dispersijas spektroskopa (EDX) palīdzību Latvijas Universitātes Cietvielu fizikas institūtā, bet laika apstākļu novērojumu dati, gāzveida piesārņotāju un aromātisko ogļūdeņražu koncentrācijas dati iegūti no Latvijas Vides, ģeoloģijas un meteoroloģijas centra (LVĢMC) novērojumu stacijām Rīgā. FIB-FESEM and EMPA results on Antoninianus silver coins for manufacturing and corrosion processes

2018

[EN] A set of ancient Antoninianus silver coins, dating back between 249 and 274¿A.D. and minted in Rome, Galliae, Orient and Ticinum, have been characterized. We use, for the first time, a combination of nano-invasive (focused ion beam-field emission scanning electron microscopy-X-ray microanalysis (FIB-FESEM-EDX), voltammetry of microparticles (VIMP)) and destructive techniques (scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA)) along with non-invasive, i.e., micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that, contrary to the extended belief, a complex Ag-Cu-Pb-Sn alloy was used. The use of alloys was common in the flourishing years of the Roman Empire. In th…

Luonnontieteellisin analyysimenetelmin tunnistettu Akseli Gallen-Kallelan väripaletti

2020

Artikkeli on kokonaisuudessaan ensimmäinen laatuaan Suomessa ja se esittelee tutkimuksen tuloksia koskien Akseli Gallen-Kallelan käyttämiä väriaineita. Tutkimusaineisto on läpileikkaus taiteilijan taiteellisesta tuotannosta vuosilta 1880–1929.

An Iranian booklet: non destructive examination by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Diffractometry and Micro-Raman Spectroscopy

2009

Energy Dispersive X-Ray Diffractometry was used in combination with micro-Raman Spectroscopy to study an undated illuminated Iranian booklet. In both cases, no preliminary preparation of the samples was needed: the data were acquired in a non-destructive way in a natural environment. The book is of particular interest because of the unusual presence of miniatures on some pages. The two techniques were used to collect data from small areas of the pages and in different regions of the miniature in order to identify inks and pigments and to attempt chronological assignment. Raman spectra were affected by strong background fluorescence. In spite of this, different peaks were detected and identi…
