AN INEXPENSIVE ULTRA-HIGH-SPEED PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE

1968

Commercial Ultra-High-Speed Cameras for framing rates over 50,000 f.p.s. are very expensive and yield a small number of frames (8 to 24) per run. The single-flash technique with increasing delays gives photographs at a high framing rate over a comparatively long time and, as described here, requires no special electronic equipment except a good flash unit and a general-purpose oscilloscope.

Stretched fibre based dispersion compensating module for ultra high-speed telecommunication systems

2008

International audience; In this work, the potential efficiency of a low-loss, tunable second-and third-order dispersion compensating module based on a stretched optical fibre for ultra high-speed telecommunication systems is analysed. Experimental results at a repetition rate of 640 GHz show that precise dispersion compensation could be achieved in the range of +0.038 ps/nm by means of an 11.3 cm maximum stretching of a 48 m long dispersion compensating.

Practical design rules for single-channel ultra high-speed dense dispersion management telecommunication systems

2009

International audience; In this work, we establish some efficient and practical design rules for the implementation of single-channel ultra-high speed (>160-Gbit/s) telecommunication systems based on dense dispersion management. Moreover, we analyze some of actual implementation issues such as slope compensation scenario, junction losses, polarization mode dispersion and chromatic dispersion fluctuations.

Growth and defense in deciduous trees and shrubs under UV-B

2005

Abstract Reflection by waxy or resinous surface structures and hairs, repair reactions of biomolecules and induction of different sheltering components provide the means of plant protection from harmful solar UV-B radiation. Secondary products, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids as defense components are also important in plant tolerance to UV-B, fulfilling the dual role as screens that reduce UV-B penetration in plant tissues, and as antioxidants protecting from damage by reactive oxidant species. Plants are sensitive to UV-B radiation, and this sensitivity can be even more clone-specific than species-specific. The results available in the literature for deciduous trees and shrubs in…

Indomethacin enhances endothelial NO release — evidence for a role of PGI2 in the autocrine control of calcium-dependent autacoid production

1998

Objective: We studied whether NO or prostacyclin (PGI2), which are continuously released by endothelial cells, have autocrine/paracrine effects on the calcium-dependent autacoid production by modulating the intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i). Methods: Histamine(His)-induced [Ca2+]i increases (Fura 2-method) and NO-dependent cGMP increase were measured in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) before and after cyclooxygenase inhibition or application of cAMP- and cGMP-elevating drugs. Results: 0.3 μM His increased endothelial [Ca2+]i from 77±2 nM to 418±59 nM. The His-induced [Ca2+]i increases were significantly attenuated following treatment with PGI2 (by 23%) and forskolin…

Toward a conceptual understanding of acute cultural adaptation: A preliminary examination of ACA in female swimming

2012

This paper considers a novel approach to researching adaptation in transnational athletes. The first part introduces a conceptualisation of acute cultural adaptation (ACA), which extends the current literature in sport psychology by offering original insights into mechanisms underpinning adaptive processes to a new cultural site during an interim relocation. Rereading a self-determination theory through the lens of cultural epistemology, the proposed theorisation suggests that ACA is realised in everyday practices drawing on a range of material and symbolic cultural resources to satisfy basic psychological needs. The second part of the paper engages the conceptualisation of ACA to make sens…

Using the Breeder genetic algorithm to optimize a multiple regression analysis model used in prediction of the mesiodistal width of unerupted teeth

2014

For the prediction of the unerupted canine and premolars mesiodistal size, have been proposed different variants of multiple linear regression equations (MLRE). These are based on the amount of the upper and lower permanent incisors with a tooth of the lateral support. Aim of present study was to develop a method for optimization of MLRE, using a genetic algorithm for determining a set of coefficients that minimizes the prediction error for the sum of permanent premolars and canines dimensions from a group of young people in an area Romania's central city represented by Sibiu. To test the proposed method, we used a multiple linear regression equation derived from the estimation method propo…

Design of the stabilization control system of a high-speed craft

2016

In this paper, the main causes of technical malfunction of a hydrofoil was analyzed. In particular, a preliminary analysis evaluates the economic impact for the navigation company of the periodical maintenance related to the keeping of the vessel in dry dock. The study demonstrated that the main critical points are focused on the fragility of the stabilization control system. The increasing of operating costs has motivated the realization of a study aimed at redesigning the stabilization system. The continuing failure of the stabilization system (usually in water-immersed) severely limits the use of the high-speed craft. The proposed design solution considers the positioning of the control …

Gli uccelli delle isole circumsiciliane

2015
