Sustainable Energy Supply Based on Sunflower Seed Husk for Oil mills

2019

The use of biomass, including sunflower husk, for in-situ energy generation has undergone a development in Ukraine last decades. Within this work, four combined heat and power technologies based on oil utilization, husk combustion, gasification, and methanization have been investigated. Their electricity and heat potential has been determined. Criteria for techno-economical assessment of CHP technologies have been suggested. Husk biogas and gasification technologies are not mature. CHP plants based on husk combustion are competitive. Steam turbine generators with a nominal electric capacity higher 1.5 MW may be profitable too.

Accurate molecular geometries of the protonated water dimer

2000

The equilibrium geometry of the protonated water dimer, H5O2+, was studied using Moller–Plesset perturbation theory and coupled-cluster theory. Constrained geometry optimizations were carried out for the C2 and Cs symmetric structures within the counterpoise framework and near the limit of a complete basis set. In the constrained optimization, the degrees of freedom of the complex are reduced to an intrafragmental distortion and an interfragmental coordinate, making the procedure tractable for large basis sets and explicitly correlated linear r12 methods. The energy of the stationary point of C2 symmetry was found to be 1.2 kJ mol−1 below the energy of the Cs structure.

Universal charts for optical difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain

2010

We present a universal and rigorous approach to study difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain, keeping the number of degrees of freedom to a minimum, through the definition of a suitable figure of merit. The proposed method relies on suitably normalized charts, that enable to predict the optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency of any system based on wave propagation in quadratic nonlinear materials. The predictions of our approach are found to be in good agreement with the best experimental results reported to date, enabling also to estimate the d22 nonlinear coefficient of high quality GaSe.

Real-time acquisition of complex optical fields by binary amplitude modulation

2017

We describe, through simulations and experiments, a real-time wavefront acquisition technique using random binary amplitude masks and an iterative phase retrieval algorithm based on the Fresnel propagator. By using a digital micromirror device, it is possible to recover an unknown complex object by illuminating with this set of masks and simultaneously recording the resulting intensity patterns with a high-speed camera, making this technique suitable for dynamic applications.

Slow pyrolysis of an LDPE/PP mixture: Kinetics and process performance

2021

Abstract High- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most common polymers among plastic waste as they have multiple commercial applications. This study focused on thermal degradation characteristics and kinetic of a plastic mixture with a composition of 92.5 wt% LDPE and 7.5% PP. Thermal decomposition characteristics of the plastic mixture was analysed through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall kinetic of the process was studied using the modified Coats−Redfern method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) method. The apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) obtained were 316.0 kJ/mol; 8.09E+21 min−1 and 311.5 kJ/mol; 4.35E+21 m…

"Try again, fail better" : detecting the intersectionality of white female protagonist in Weeds

2012

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kuinka televisiosarja Weedsin naispäähahmon identiteetti rakentuu intersektiävistä subjektipositioista. Subjektipositioilla tarkoitetaan positioita kuten luokka tai sukupuoli, joiden kautta yksilö kohtaa maailman ja joiden kautta hänet määritellään. Tutkimusaineistona on käytetty televisiosarja Weedsin kaikkia kahdeksaa tuotantokautta, jotta identiteetin rakentuminen prosessina voidaan hahmottaa selvemmin. Televisiosarja Weeds (2005- 2012) keskittyy marijuanaa välittävään yksinhuoltajaäitiin ja hänen perheeseensä. Sarja on esimerkillinen tutkimuskohde intersektionaaliselle analyysille sillä se nostaa esille monia yhteiskunnan epäkohtia ja esittää päähen…

Behaviour-modifying compounds for management of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliver).

2014

BACKGROUND: Populations of red palm weevil (RPW), a severe pest of palms in Mediterranean countries, might be limited by semiochemical-based behaviour-disrupting methods. We evaluated the effects of electroantennogram (EAG)-active plant volatiles on the behaviour of RPWs from Italy and Israel. In field experiments, α-pinene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and 1-octen-3-ol were tested for their ability to disrupt attraction to pheromone-kairomone and molasses baited traps. Those that were found to be disruptive in the field were evaluated in a laboratory choice bioassay in individual cages for their effect on RPW female feeding and oviposition. RESULTS: Field experiments showed reduced captur…

Non-surgical periodontal treatment with a new ultrasonic device (Vectortm-ultrasonic system) or hand instruments. A prospective, controlled clinical …

2004

Objectives: The aim of this prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study was to compare the effectiveness of a newly developed ultrasonic device to that of scaling and root planing for non-surgical periodontal treatment. Material and Methods: Thirty-eight patients with moderate to advanced chronic periodontal disease were treated according to an “one-stage procedure” with either a newly developed ultrasonic device (VUS) (Vector™-ultrasonic system) or scaling and root planing (SRP) using hand instruments. Clinical assessments by plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were made …

Show me your tail, if you have one! Is inbreeding depression occurring in wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) from Italy?

2022

Knowledge of genetic diversity is important to wildlife conservation because genetically depleted populations experience an increased risk of extinction. Mammalian carnivores are characterized by small and fragmented populations and low dispersal, so that genetic erosion can lead to the fixation of deleterious genes relatively quickly, leading to morphological abnormalities. Kinked tails and cowlicks are indicative of inbreeding depression and have been described in two wild cat species so far, the puma (Puma concolor) and the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). Here we report the first records of morphological abnormalities in five populations of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) …
