Leg extension power deficit and mobility limitation in women recovering from hip fracture.

2008

OBJECTIVE: After hip fracture, muscle strength and power remain persistently poor, especially in the fractured leg. This study explores whether asymmetrical leg extension power (LEP) deficit affects mobility in women after proximal femoral fracture (PFF). DESIGN: In this observational study, LEP of both legs, 10- and 50-foot walking speed, and stair-climbing speed were measured in 43 women, aged 73-96, at 1 and 13 wks after surgical repair of PFF. Asymmetrical LEP deficit was calculated as (fractured/(sum both legs)) x 100%. RESULTS: Between weeks 1 and 13 after PFF surgery, LEP increased in the fractured and nonfractured legs by 100% and 30%, respectively. Asymmetrical deficit was reduced …

Hysteroscopy and treatment of uterine polyps.

2015

This article summarizes and analyzes the salient topics on the diagnosis and management of endometrial polyps, focusing on the role of the hysteroscopy. Noninvasive investigations such as transvaginal ultrasonography, with or without the use of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D US) and contrast techniques, remain the mainstay of first-line investigation. Hysteroscopic resection represents the gold standard minimally invasive treatment for endometrial polyps. It is the most effective management and allows histologic assessment, whereas blind biopsy or curettage have low diagnostic accuracy and should not be performed.

Effect of probiotics as a complement to non-surgical periodontal therapy in chronic periodontitis : a systematic review

2020

Background To improve the results of the classic periodontal treatment, probiotics have been suggested recently to decrease the number of bacteria and the expression of mediators of inflammation. This systematic review aimed to assess the literature for the effectiveness of different probiotic strains as adjuvants to non-surgical periodontal therapy. Material and Methods The electronic database of MEDLINE (via Pubmed) was searched up to December 2017 for randomised clinical trials in English comparing non-surgical periodontal treatment and probiotics versus periodontal treatment and placebo. The primary outcome investigated was reduction in pocket probing depth. Secondary outcomes were blee…

Individual alpha peak frequency, an important biomarker for live Z-Score training neurofeedback in adolescents with learning disabilities

2021

Learning disabilities (LDs) have an estimated prevalence between 5% and 9% in the pediatric population and are associated with difficulties in reading, arithmetic, and writing. Previous electroencephalography (EEG) research has reported a lag in alpha-band development in specific LD phenotypes, which seems to offer a possible explanation for differences in EEG maturation. In this study, 40 adolescents aged 10–15 years with LDs underwent 10 sessions of Live Z-Score Training Neurofeedback (LZT-NF) Training to improve their cognition and behavior. Based on the individual alpha peak frequency (i-APF) values from the spectrogram, a group with normal i-APF (ni-APF) and a group with low i-APF (li-…

Evaluation of the predictive value of the bleeding prediction score VTE‐BLEED for recurrent venous thromboembolism

2019

Abstract Introduction VTE‐BLEED is a validated score for identification of patients at increased risk of major bleeding during extended anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism (VTE). It is unknown whether VTE‐BLEED high‐risk patients also have an increased risk for recurrent VTE, which would limit the potential usefulness of the score. Methods This was a post hoc analysis of the randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled PADIS‐PE trial that randomized patients with a first unprovoked pulmonary embolism (PE) initially treated during 6 months to receive an additional 18‐month of warfarin vs. placebo. The primary outcome of this analysis was recurrent VTE during 2‐year follow‐up after ant…

Commentary: Preliminary Evidence for Training-Induced Changes of Morphology and Phantom Limb Pain

2019

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a special prosthetic training in phantom limb pain patients aimed at increasing the functional use of the prosthesis leads to neural morphological plasticity of brain structures and a reduction in phantom limb pain. For chronic pain disorders, it was shown that morphological alterations due to pain might become at least partially reversed by pain therapies. Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain disorder that is frequently followed by neural plasticity of anatomical brain structures. In our study, 10 patients with amputation of the upper limb participated in a two-week training with a myoelectric prosthesis with somatosensory feedback. Grip stre…

Concept of an extracellular regulation of muscular metabolic rate during heavy exercise in humans by psychophysiological feedback.

1996

Efferent motor signals to skeletal muscles concern not only the space/ time pattern of motion, but also the setting of muscular performance and through this the control of the current metabolic rate. For an optimal adjustment of metabolic rate during heavy exercise-e.g. in athletic competitions-a feedback control system must exist, including a programmer that takes into consideration a finishing point (teleoanticipation). The presented experiments, using Borg's scale, indicate the existence and functioning of a system for optimal adjustment of performance during heavy exercise and the relevance of teleoanticipatory effects. Thus motor learning includes not only somatosensory control, but al…

Interleukin 12 enhances deficient HCV-antigen-induced Th1-type immune response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells

1998

The aim of this study was to examine the possible immunomodulating effects of rhIL-12 on the immune response induced by different hepatitis C virus (HCV) antigens. Freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of 33 patients with chronic HCV infection were stimulated with optimal concentrations of antigens from the NS3, NS4, NS5, and core region of HCV in the absence or presence of interleukin12 (IL-12). Stimulation by α-CD3 + α-CD28, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) were used as controls. Proliferation and cytokine production were determined by 3H-thymidine uptake and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after 72 hr. After stimulation with antigen or a…

The Lègami/Legàmi Service—An Experience of Psychological Intervention in Maternal and Child Care during COVID-19

2021

This study provides a descriptive analysis of the Lègami/Legàmi service, a free psychological support service in maternal and childcare, offered through the internet and by telephone that was initiated by the Italian Society of Pediatric Psychology (S.I.P.Ped.) during the COVID-19 medical emergency as an act of solidarity, first independently, and then in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Health. This paper presents findings related to the “universe” of people who called the toll-free service, from the sociocultural characteristics of the users to the information collected by the professionals during the psychological pathways until human satisfaction was achieved. We provide a ret…

Pharmacokinetics of new oral anticoagulants: implications for use in routine care

2018

Introduction: Since 2008, new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been approved for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients receiving hip or knee replacement surgery, prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). Premarketing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of NOACs demonstrated their non-inferiority in terms of efficacy vs. warfarin (traditional oral anticoagulant–TOA), with lower risk of serious adverse drug reactions, especially cerebral hemorrhages. In clinical practice, pharmacokinetic aspects of NOACs have to be carefully taken into account to …
