La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateSicily in Bears of Dino Buzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti · In Dino Buzzati’s illustrated fairy tale The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily (1945) and its film adaptation by Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) the Sicilian setting is decisive. In both cases Sicily is an island with a large volcano – transfigured into a fantastic setting or rewritten according to certain stereotypes – that the two authors use with different meanings within the ecosystem of their narratives. Only through a comparison between the two works will it be possible to distinguish the representation of the two Sicilies which are narrated within an interval of about seventy years. If one does not consider the story of the Bears merely a children’s fairy tale using simplistic stylistic devices but on the contrary sees it as an opportunity for the author to deal with serious and complex issues such as an ante litteram Ecocritical perspective or questions of inter-group conflicts derived from Subaltern or Migration Studies the images of the two Sicilies can provide altogether new interpretations.

Dendrolatrie. Miti e pratiche dell'immaginario arboreo

2021

Fede e ordalia. Religiosità e cyber community a Catania.

2009

The monograph presents n anthropological analysis of the religious feast os Saint Agata in Sicily (Italy), which is one of the most important in the Mediterranean area, gathering a very big number of faithful people, especially young, who live this commemorative moment like an unloose appointment with the patron saint of Catania, town of the Sicilian region in southern Italy. According to us, it represents not only a religious feast, consecrating the annual encounter between the Saint and her local community, but a kind of modern youth initiation rite.

Genotypic characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional Pecorino Siciliano cheese

2008

A total of 468 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates from the interior of six traditional Pecorino Siciliano cheeses during ripening (1, 30 and 90 days) were characterized genotypically in order to assess the biodiversity within this wild microbial population. Two DNA-based technique, PCR and PFGE were used for genetic typing of isolates. Of the 468 isolates, species-specific PCR analysis showed that 79, 58, 2, 9 and 4 isolates reacted with primers for Lactobacillus paracasei, Lb. plantarum, Lb. pentosus, Lb. rhamnosus and Lb. curvatus, respectively and no isolates reacted with the Lb. casei primers. Genus-specific PCR analysis showed that 59 isolates reacted positively with the lactococcal p…

Louseborne relapsing fever in young migrants, sicily, Italy, july-september 2015

2016

To the Editor: During the early 20th century, at the end of World War I, and during World War II, louseborne relapsing fever (LBRF) caused by Borrelia recurrentis was a major public health problem, especially in eastern Europe and northern Africa (1,2). Currently, poor living conditions, famine, war, and refugee camps are major risk factors for epidemics of LBRF in resource-poor countries, such as those in the Horn of Africa (3,4). Increased migration from resource-poor countries and war/violence create new routes for spread of vectorborne diseases. Recently, several cases of LBRF have been reported among asylum seekers from Eritrea in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany (5–8). All of…

[Deciding in conditions of uncertainty: the Delphi method and its use in the formulation of guidelines].

2001

The purpose of this paper is to analyze one of the most powerful tools in the decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, the Delphi method, and to verify the related interest of scientific world, particularly, for formulation of guidelines. The method combines the expert opinion preventing biases due to institutional role, status or dominant personality. In the text we explain the methodology and the steps through which it is possible to realize the consensus; we schematized in a didactic manner all the phases for an operational approach of the reader. The search by the most diffused biomedical database (Medline) individualized 623 citations, 7 of which are guidelines (3 of remarkable…

Lessons learned from the facts on the ground and political demands for future agency

2021

Since the first “emergency migration” event in Italy (1990s), social work represented the interface and the filter between the Italian reception system and migrants, acting for initial assessment, orientation and “sorting" of migrants into the various local and national welfare agencies and in the network of public and private services within the reception system (Simone, 2020). Consequently, in addition to the more operational competences, social workers need to be supported by training, in-service training and supervision, in order to acquire, along with updated methods and knowledge, full awareness of the dictates of their deontological code; in accordance with this, there should be an a…

Scrutinizing the situation on the ground in Sicily

2021

Conditions of refugees and migrants in Sicily are very difficult because there are a lot of implications, variations, observations, problems, difficulties. In recent years, migration has become one of the most debated issues in public opinion because of its political, economic, social, and cultural implications. In addition to defining problems, doubts, epistemological errors, conflicts that the categories used (e.g., regular/irregular, refugee/asylum seekers) trigger. The focus on migration has become the topic for the clashes among political forces and to justify the difficulties that the country complains about. In this frame there is a gap between “reality” and its “representation”: as …
