Health and the war. Changing schemes and health conditions during the Spanish civil war

This paper focuses on the health reforms during the republican Spain (1931-1939) and the crisis derived from the three-year of civil war. It considers how the war affected the health system and the impairment of health conditions of the population during the late 1930s, considering the changing conditions caused by the conflict. Some of the specific topics analysed are the changing healthcare system, the adaptation of health organization after the outbreak of the war, the impact of the war on the health of the population and epidemiological changes, the problem of the refugees and the clinical studies by experts, mainly on undernourishment.

Accurate molecular geometries of the protonated water dimer

The equilibrium geometry of the protonated water dimer, H5O2+, was studied using Moller–Plesset perturbation theory and coupled-cluster theory. Constrained geometry optimizations were carried out for the C2 and Cs symmetric structures within the counterpoise framework and near the limit of a complete basis set. In the constrained optimization, the degrees of freedom of the complex are reduced to an intrafragmental distortion and an interfragmental coordinate, making the procedure tractable for large basis sets and explicitly correlated linear r12 methods. The energy of the stationary point of C2 symmetry was found to be 1.2 kJ mol−1 below the energy of the Cs structure.

On the influences of vegetation biomass on COSMO-Skymed X-band

The knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of land cover is important to manage water resources for yield forecasting, water stress prediction, irrigation water management and flood protection. Cloud cover dramatically reduces the temporal resolution of optical data thus limiting their operational use; in addition, the spatial resolution is often inadequate for applications in heterogeneous areas. Universal charts for optical difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain

We present a universal and rigorous approach to study difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain, keeping the number of degrees of freedom to a minimum, through the definition of a suitable figure of merit. The proposed method relies on suitably normalized charts, that enable to predict the optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency of any system based on wave propagation in quadratic nonlinear materials. The predictions of our approach are found to be in good agreement with the best experimental results reported to date, enabling also to estimate the d22 nonlinear coefficient of high quality GaSe.

Preliminary study on analysis and removal of wax from a Carrara marble statue

This preliminary study has mainly focused on the wax identification by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and removal. Wax is used for many purposes in the field of art as protective coatings on wooden, stone or metal objects. From the comparison of the spectra H NMR and in particular with the correspondence of the resonance peaks of the samples taken from the statue and beeswax and paraffin, we can conclude that the wax applied on the statue surface is beeswax. From our data, it can be concluded that, to remove the beeswax, from any stone support, the more effective solvent is the mixture of cyclohexane/ethyl acetate. Benefits of the relations between editorial board members and scholarly journals. The case of Ibero-American journals of psychology

[EN]: The objective of the present work is to delve into the publication habits of members of editorial committees of Ibero-American journals of psychology, collected in the Web of Science (WoS) between the years 2013 and 2015. Different bibliometric indicators were used and the results reveal a disparity in the participation of editorial board members from one journal to another, including a shorter article acceptance time and a larger number of citations, mainly in Web of Science and BIOSIS. In-Depth Investigation of the Safety of Wooden Shelves Used for Traditional Cheese Ripening

ABSTRACT The main goal of this research was to characterize the bacterial diversity of the wooden boards used for aging traditional Sicilian cheeses and to evaluate whether pathogenic bacteria are associated with these surfaces. Eighteen cheese dairy factories producing three traditional cheese typologies (PDO Pecorino Siciliano, PDO Piacentinu Ennese, and Caciocavallo Palermitano) were selected within the region of Sicily. Determination of cow’s milk in non-bovine and mixed cheeses by capillary electrophoresis of whey proteins in acidic isoelectric buffers

An improved method for the determination of cow's milk in non-bovine cheese is reported: electrophoresis of whey proteins in acidic, isoelectric buffers. Two background electrolytes (BGEs) have been tested: (i) 50 mM iminodiacetic acid (pH=isoelectric point=2.30 at 25 degrees C), 0.5% hydroxyethylcellulose, 0.1% Tween 20 and 6 M urea (apparent pH 3.1), E=300 V/cm, for the separation of alpha-lactalbumins (alpha-LAs); (ii) a BGE with the same composition, but supplemented with 10% Tween 20, E=450 V/cm, for the fractionation of beta-lactoglobulins (beta-LGs). Sorption of wine volatile phenols by yeast lees

The capacity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast lees to sorb 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol was investigated in a synthetic medium and in wine. Active dried yeast was more effective when volatile phenols were diluted in red wine. Partition coefficients between wine model solution and wine yeast lees were determined and compared with those measured for dried active yeast. They showed a larger affinity of volatile phenols for wine yeast lees than for dried active yeast. The effect of yeast lees on volatile phenol sorption was sensitive to yeast autolysis level and to physicochemical parameters, such as ethanol content, temperature and pH.
