Accuracy of ASTER Level-2 thermal-infrared Standard Products of an agricultural area in Spain

2007

Abstract The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) collects five-channel thermal-infrared images that are calibrated, corrected for atmospheric effects, and then converted to land surface temperature and emissivity products by the ASTER Temperature/Emissivity Separation (TES) algorithm. TES scales low- and high-contrast surfaces differently, and has been validated over water (low contrast) and rock (high contrast). Performance of TES over agricultural areas, however, has not been evaluated specifically. To address this issue, field measurements of “ground truth” were made over bare soil in addition to green grass, alfalfa and corn, at an agricultural researc…

The PolarLITIS Dataset: Road Scenes Under Fog

2022

Road scene analysis is a fundamental task for both autonomous vehicles and ADAS systems. Nowadays, one can find autonomous vehicles that are able to properly detect objects in the scene in good weather conditions; however, some improvements still need to be done when the visibility is altered. People claim that using some non-conventional sensors such as, infra-red or Lidar, combined with classical vision, enhances road scene analysis in optimal weather conditions. In this work, we present the improvements achieved using polarimetric imaging in the complex situation of some adverse weather conditions. This rich modality is known for its ability to describe an object not only by its intensit…

The requirement for the inclusion of formulation efficacy trials in pesticide preregistration evaluations

2008

BACKGROUND: Optimization of biocide use could serve to reduce the risks of biocides on human health. To optimize the risk/benefit ratio, it is important to develop procedures for evaluating the efficacy of biocide formulations. The authors examined the effectiveness of ten pyrethroid insecticide aerosol formulations registered for the household control of flies. Tests were performed using adult Musca domestica L. Knockdown effects and mortality were measured in a test chamber using the manufacturer's recommended discharge time. RESULTS: The knockdown effect varied greatly between aerosols of similar composition. The knockdown 15 min post-treatment was 66–98% for flies placed 120 cm above fl…

The Narration to Take Care of Oneself in the Development of Educational Professions

2019

This work aims to highlight the importance of narration and autobiographic practice in looking after oneself. The narration represents a technology of taking care of oneself (Foucault, 1992) and at the same time, facilitates the person in oneself recognition and self-training. The merit of narrating is extremely educational and formative for whoever is preparing to operate a practical training in the field of caring professions, including the educational ones (Zannini, 2003). An active methodology to work through the narration is the autobiographic practice which offers to the pedagogy and the educational research the opportunity to place subjects at the hearth, adding depth to the educatio…

Neural Activation During Submaximal Contractions Seems More Reflective of Neuromuscular Ageing than Maximal Voluntary Activation

2016

International audience; This study aimed at testing the hypothesis that differences in neural activation strategy during submaximal but not maximal plantarflexions exist between young and older men. Eleven young men (YM, 26 +/- 4 years) and thirteen old men (OM, 76 +/- 3 years) volunteered for the investigation. Maximal voluntary torque (MVT) was 38.2%, lower (p < 0.001) in OM than in YM, while voluntary activation was equivalent (similar to 97%). The relationship between the interpolated twitch torque and the voluntary torque (IT-VT relationship) was composite (curvilinear + exponential) for both age-groups. However, the OM showed accentuated concavity, as attested by the occurrence of the…

Integrating Personality Structure, Personality Process, and Personality Development

2017

In this target article, we argue that personality processes, personality structure, and personality development have to be understood and investigated in integrated ways in order to provide comprehensive responses to the key questions of personality psychology. The psychological processes and mechanisms that explain concrete behaviour in concrete situations should provide explanation for patterns of variation across situations and individuals, for development over time as well as for structures observed in intra–individual and inter–individual differences. Personality structures, defined as patterns of covariation in behaviour, including thoughts and feelings, are results of those processe…

The performance of thin-film Li-ion batteries under flexural deflection

2006

A method is introduced to study the effects of flexural deformation on the electrical performance of thin-film lithium-ion batteries. Flexural deformation of thin films is of interest to engineers for applications that can be effective in conformal spaces in conjunction with multi-functional composite laminates in structural members under mechanical deflections such as thin airfoils used in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A test fixture was designed and built using rapid prototyping techniques. A baseline reference charge/discharge cycle was initially obtained with the device in its un-flexed state, in order to later contrast the performance of the thin-film battery when subjected to defle…

685 Food Allergy - Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease Association in Infants

2012

Background Cow’s milk allergy is considered to be the first and most common type of allergy during early infancy. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease and cow’s milk allergy are two different diseases with common clinical features. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical data in relation with gastroesophageal reflux and cow’s milk allergy in infants. Material and Methods The prospective study includes 36 infants aged between 2–6 months who attended at Pediatric Clinic during the year 2011 for the clinical evocative manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux. Study protocol includes: clinical criteria, familial/personal atopic features, mother diet, duration of breastfeeding, infant for…

Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle

2017

International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.
