Refsum disease. Clinical and morphological report on a case
1982
An atypical case of Refsum disease is reported together with the peripheral nerve morphological data. The body fluids must be assayed for phytanic acid whenever an atypical chronic peripheral neuropathy is observed.
Validation of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index in Patients Having Undergone Ankle Fracture Surgery
2019
The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) is a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) that is widely used to evaluate the pain, stiffness, and physical function of patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. Although the WOMAC has also been used for patients after foot and ankle surgery, it has not been validated for this purpose. A total of 130 patients with surgically treated ankle fractures completed the WOMAC, Visual Analogue Scale Foot and Ankle (VAS FA), Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), 15D Health-Related Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (15D), and Visual Analog Scale for General Health (VAS general health) after foot and ankle surgery. The…
Student-Teachers’ And School-Based Teacher Educators’ Beliefs About Teaching Practices And Instructional Goals
2015
Beliefs about teaching are integrated into teaching practices and instructional goals that impact teachers’ professional development. The aim of the research was to identify the beliefs that student-teachers and school-based teacher educators have about the development of pupils’ cognitive and social competences. First-year student-teachers and school-based teacher educators completed a questionnaire. The results revealed that the teachers’ beliefs vary according to their teaching experience. The student teachers preferred practices that were aimed at mechanical acquisition. The teacher educators’ choices of teaching practices were aimed at developing the pupils’ learning competences and th…
Biological diversity of the microbial film associated to the central-Mediterranean Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859) reefs.
2017
Microbial films may provide physical and bio-chemical cues which positively affect the settlement dynamic of a variety of benthic marine organisms, driving the development of ecosystems. Also for the Mediterranean intertidal reef-builder Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859), biofilm maturity has been found to enhance the settlement pattern. However, the microbial diversity associated with these bioconstructions has never been described. This study investigates the D. cristatum reef bacterial assemblage composition and temporal evolution in two localities in the northwest of Sicily. Biological diversity of the reef-associated biofilm and of 3 progressively older biofims obtained on artificial…
The premise, promise and disillusion of the ADHD categorisation - family narrative about the child's broken school trajectory
2019
This study presents co-narrated school experiences of a young Finnish girl diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those of her parents. The discourse analysis of the family interview focused on the discrepant ways family members gave meanings to and mobilised the ADHD categorisation while narrating their broken school trajectory. The results showed that the ADHD diagnosis was laden with the promise of the whole family being recognised differently by the school. However, this cultural promise proved disillusioning as daughter's support needs and parents' expertise were not recognised nor did the diagnostic category emancipate from stigmatising identities and blame…
Graphical models for estimating dynamic networks
2012
Rece…
Foreign Language Learners’ Pronunciation Learning Beliefs and Strategies
2021
This quantitative research investigates the extent to which adult L2 learners act in line with what they declare to believe in regarding pronunciation learning. In other words, this paper focuses on determining the strength of the relationship between the frequency of use of L2 pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) and the beliefs the individuals hold on selected factors affecting pronunciation acquisition, pronunciation instruction, self-efficacy, pronunciation learning goals and affective factors in pronunciation learning. A group of 116 learners of English as a foreign language who took an English phonetics course responded to the Pronunciation Learning Strategies Inventory (PLSI) and …
Identification of new claudin family members by a novel PSI-BLAST based approach with enhanced specificity.
2006
In an attempt to develop a novel strategy for the identification of new members of protein families by in silico approaches, we have developed a semi-automated procedure of consecutive PSI-BLAST (Position-Specific-Iterated Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) searches incorporating identificiation as well as subsequent validation of putative candidates. For a proof of concept study we chose the search for novel members of the claudin family. The initial step was an iterated PSI-BLAST search starting with the PMP22_Claudin domain of each known member of the claudin family against the human part of the RefSeq Database. Putative new claudin domains derived from the converged list were evaluated …
Asset Return Dynamics under Alternative Learning Schemes
2009
In this paper we design an artificial financial market where endogenous volatility is created assigning to the agents diverse prior beliefs about the joint distribution of returns, and, over time, making agents rationally update their beliefs using common public information. We analyze the asset price dynamics generated under two learning environments: one where agents assume that the joint distribution of returns is IID, and another where agents believe in the existence of regimes in the joint distribution of asset returns. We show that the regime switching learning structure can generate all the most common stylized facts of financial markets: fat tails and long-range dependence in volati…
In silico strategy for detection of target candidates for antibody therapy of solid tumors
2008
In contrast to earlier attempts for the identification of target candidates suitable for monoclonal antibody (mAb) based cancer therapies we concentrated on highly selective lineage-specific genes additionally preserved or even overexpressed in orthotopic cancers. In a script aided workflow we reduced all human entries of the RefSeq mRNA database to those encoding transmembrane domain bearing gene products and subjected them to BLAST analysis against the human EST database. All BLAST results were validated in a gene centric way allowing two types of data curation prior to expression profiling of matching ESTs in selected healthy tissues: (i) exclusion of questionable ESTs arising e.g. from …
