Biopiracy and the right to self-determination of indigenous peoples.

2018

Abstract Background: Since over thirty years, I work on the unclear legal situation of in which indigenous peoples find themselves today in the beginning mainly in the USA and later also in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The status of indigenous people and native nations is characterized as a mixture of national and international law. Hypothesis/Purpose: To clarify the status of indigenous people it is necessary to analyze and interpret carefully hundreds of old treaties, international declarations and covenants, national statutes and jurisprudence, especially the old leading decisions of the US-Supreme Court. Such an analysis and interpretation should prove that indigenous people have …

Gli Angiomi Primitivi Dei Muscoli Striati

1957

Starting from a personal observation of primary angioma of the left pectoralis major, investigations on muscle angiomas are resumed, with the purpose of completing the latest statistical analyses. 75 new cases are reviewed which, added to those from Shallow, Eger and Wagner, bring the number of angiomas referred in the literature up to 111. The etiopathogenesis, pathological anatomy and symptomatology of this affection are considererd and the differential diagnosis, still very difficult, is discussed. A diagnostical misunderstanding may be avoided or limited by thinking of this possible occurrence. The numerous means, currently available for an easier diagnosis are exposed, like direct roe…

Safety and efficacy of left atrial appendage occlusion with the ACP or Watchman device guided by intracardiac echocardiography from the left atrium

2021

Abstract Background There is a paucity of randomized data regarding the safety and efficacy of the use of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) from the left atrium (LA) to guide left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures under local anesthesia using either of the available devices. Hypothesis The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of ICE from the LA with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for guidance during transcatheter LAAO procedures. Methods Single‐center, cohort study of patients undergoing LAAO with the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug or Watchman device. Procedures were guided by ICE from the LA with local anesthesia (n = 175) or TEE under general anesthesia (n…

Prognostic significance of central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide difference during the first 24 hours of septic shock in patients with and withou…

2017

IF 6.238; International audience; Objective: To investigate the prognostic significance of central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide difference (cv-art CO2 gap) during septic shock in patients with and without impaired cardiac function. Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study in 10 French intensive care units. Patients suffering from septic shock were assigned to the impaired cardiac function group (‘cardiac group’, n=123) if they had atrial fibrillation (AF) and/or left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 0.9 kPa at 12 h had a higher risk of day 28 mortality (hazard ratio=3.18; P=0.0049). Among the 59 patients in the cardiac group with mean arterial pressure (MAP) ≥65 mm Hg, centr…

Recombinant growth hormone therapy in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy : effects on hemodynamics, left ventricular function, and cardiopulmonary…

1999

Background —We studied the effects of recombinant growth hormone (rhGH) on exercise capacity and cardiac function in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Methods and Results —Seven patients (aged 55±9 years) with mild to moderate congestive heart failure (ejection fraction 31±4%) who were on standard therapy were included. The patients were studied at baseline, after 3 months of rhGH treatment, and 3 months after rhGH discontinuation. Cardiac function was assessed by exercise capacity, right heart catheterization at rest and after submaximal exercise, MRI, echocardiography, and Holter monitoring. When administered at a dose of 2 IU/d, rhGH doubled the serum concentration of insulin-like …

Effects of sauna bath on heart failure : A systematic review and meta-analysis

2018

Background: Sauna bath has potential as a lifestyle treatment modality for heart failure (HF). It is important to analyze the current evidence to help suggest paths of future study and potential for clinical application. Hypothesis: Sauna bath has a positive effect on HF patients. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases were searched to identify randomized and nonrandomized controlled studies to compare effects of sauna bath with no sauna bath. Studies were searched for both infrared sauna bath and Finnish sauna bath. The strength of evidence was rated using a modified GRADE approach. Out of 1444 studies, nine met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Seve…

Local transient myocardial liposomal gene transfer of inducible nitric oxide synthase does not aggravate myocardial function and fibrosis and leads t…

2010

Microcirculation (2010) 17, 69–78. doi: 10.1111/j.1549-8719.2010.00002.x Abstract Background:  This study was designed to explore the effect of transient inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) overexpression via cationic liposome-mediated gene transfer on cardiac function, fibrosis, and microvascular perfusion in a porcine model of chronic ischemia. Methods and Results:  Chronic myocardial ischemia was induced using a minimally invasive model in 23 landrace pigs. Upon demonstration of heart failure, 10 animals were treated with liposome-mediated iNOS-gene-transfer by local intramyocardial injection and 13 animals received a sham procedure to serve as control. The efficacy of this iNOS-gene-…

0229: Alterations of cardiac function induced by postnatal overfeeding can be reversed by moderate diet restriction

2014

Postnatal overfeeding (OF) in rodents induces a permanent moderate increase in body weight, metabolic disorders and progressive alterations of cardiac function. Our aim was to determine whether moderate diet restriction could restore cardiac function in mature overfed mice. Immediately after birth, litters of C57BL/6 mice were either maintained at nine (normal-fed group, NF), or reduced to three in order to induce OF. At weaning, mice of both groups received a standard diet ad libitum (AL). At 6 months of age, half of the OF mice were assigned to a moderate 20% calorie restriction (CR, OF-CR) for one month, while NF and the other half of the OF mice continued to eat ad libitum (NF-AL, OF-AL…

0053 : Short-term moderate diet restriction in adulthood can reverse alterations of cardiac function induced by postnatal overfeeding in mice

2015

Postnatal overfeeding (OF) in rodents induces early programming of cardio-metabolic risk: permanent moderate increase in body weight, metabolic disorders and progressive alterations of cardiac function in adulthood. Our aim was to determine whether moderate diet restriction, performed at the time where these disorders are acquired, could restore cardiac function and ameliorate post-ischemic recovery.Immediately after birth, litters of C57BL/6 mice were either maintained at 9 (normal-fed group, NF), or reduced to 3 in order to induce OF. At weaning, mice of both groups received a standard diet ad libitum (AL). At 6 months of age, half of the NF mice and OF mice were assigned to a moderate 20…
