Tear production and intraocular pressure values in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (<i>Cygnus cygnus</i>)

2018

The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of tear production and values of intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus). A total of 86 birds: 81 cygnets (6-10 weeks old) and 5 moulting - adult swans (3-6 years old) were examined in this study. Both eyes of all birds underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and the assessment of the IOP by rebound tonometry, employing the TonoVet® device. The mean ± standard deviation of PRTT values were as follows: all cygnets (81) 22.59±3.48 mm/15s, male cygnets (45) 22.64±3.54 mm/15s, female cygnets (36) 22.53±3.4…

Beyond The Wall, Notes An Multicultural Mediterranean Landscape

2009

Transforming growth factor beta1 T29C gene polymorphism and hypertension: relationship with cardiovascular and renal damage.

2008

Distribution of T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism was analysed in 260 hypertensive and 134 normotensive subjects. Circulating TGFb1 and procollagen type III levels, microalbuminuria, left ventricular geometry and function were evaluated in all the hypertensives subgrouped according to T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism. Circulating TGFb1by ELISA technique, procollagen type III by a specific radioimmunoassay, microalbuminuria by radioimmunoassay, left ventricular geometry and function by echocardiography were determined. All groups were comparable for gender, age and sex. Regarding T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism, prevalence of TC or CC genotypes was significantly (pv0.05) higher in hypertensives than nor…

Renal and nonrenal clearances of ceftriaxone at the steady-state and its relation to plasma protein binding

1995

Abstract The effect of the saturable plasma protein binding of ceftriaxone on the elimination of this drug was studied under steady-state conditions in the rat. A concentration-dependent increase in the total, renal and nonrenal clearances of total drug (bound + unbound) was observed, and it was related to the increase in the ex vivo unbound fraction of ceftriaxone as the plasma concentration increased. The nonrenal clearance of the unbound ceftriaxone showed a statistically significant decrease as the plasma concentration of the unbound drug at the steady state increased, which indicates that the nonrenal elimination of the drug (mainly by biliary excretion) is a saturable process. Renal c…

Enterobacter and Klebsiella species isolated from fresh vegetables marketed in Valencia (Spain) and their clinically relevant resistances to chemothe…

2013

Occurrence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic or commensal enterobacteria in marketed agricultural foodstuffs may contribute to their incorporation into the food chain and constitutes an additional food safety concern. In this work, we have determined the clinically relevant resistances to 11 common chemotherapeutic agents in Enterobacter and Klebsiella isolates from fresh vegetables from various sources (supermarkets and greengrocers' shops in Valencia, Spain). A total of 96 isolates were obtained from 160 vegetables analyzed (50% positive samples): 68 Enterobacter isolates (59 E. cloacae, two E. aerogenes, two E. cancerogenus, one E. gergoviae, and four E. sakazakii, currently Cronobacter…

Early and midterm outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds for ostial coronary lesions: insights from the GHOST-EU registry.

2016

Aims: We aimed to investigate the outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) in coronary ostial lesions. Ostial lesions represent a challenging angiographic subset, with higher event rates compared with non-ostial lesions. BVS might be associated with advantages over the long term, but their safety in this setting remains to be explored. Methods and results: Procedural and 12-month follow-up data from consecutive patients treated with BVS for lesions located at the ostium of the right (RCA), left anterior (LAD) or circumflex (LCX) coronary in 11 European centres were collected. The primary device-oriented endpoint was defined as a combination of cardiovascular death, target vessel m…

LEFT VENTRICULAR HYPERTROPHY IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH NORMAL ELECTROCARDIOGRAM

2011

Objective: In hypertensive patients the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately electrocardiogram (ECG) has a low sensitivity in detecting LVH, while echocardiography cannot be routinely and extensively performed in all hypertensive patients. In this study we evaluated the prevalence of LVH and of anomalies of diastolic function in a group of hypertensive patients with normal ECG, and free of diabetes and CV diseases. Design and Methods: Patients with CV diseases, diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), electrocardiographic LVH (Sokolow-Lyons or Cornell criterion) or “strain” were excluded. We enr…

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBESITY AND LEFT VENTRICULAR MASS IN CAUCASIAN HYPERTENSIVE SUBJECTS. DOES SEX MATTER?

2015

Objective The excess of adiposity affects the heart through haemodynamic and non haemodynamic mechanisms leading to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and ultimately to heart failure. It has been been previously observed, in a large study performed in American Indians, that the impact of obesity on left ventricular mass (LVM) is greater in women than men, while the results of other investigations carried out in other ethnic groups have yielded conflicting results .The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential influence of gender on the relationships between obesity and LVM in Caucasian patients with essential hypertension (EHs) . Design and method We enrolled 724 subjects with EH (mean…
