The occurrence of Echinorhynchus salmonis Müller, 1784 in benthic amphipods in the Baltic Sea

The acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus salmonis Muller, 1784 is a common parasite of salmonid fish, but it has rarely been reported from an intermediate host. Samples of benthic amphipods, Monoporeia affinis (Lindstrom), were taken from multiple, deep sites (usually below 70 m) in the Gulf of Bothnia over the course of more than a decade and examined for acanthocephalans. Overall, only 0.44% of 23 296 amphipods were infected, all with just a single worm. This prevalence is consistent with several previous reports of acanthocephalans in deep-water, benthic amphipods, but it appears low compared to that often reported for acanthocephalan species infecting littoral amphipods. Growth and production of three macrozoobenthic species in the Gulf of Riga, including comparisons with other areas

Three soft-bottom stations in the southern part of the Gulf of Riga were studied during the period December 1993 to January 1995. The amphipods, Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, and the poychaete Marenzelleria viridis, were analysed for production, using the cohort growth method. Animals were also analysed for carbon and nitrogen content in a CHN-analyser. Based on size measurements, the quantitative data were divided into age-classes and the growth of each cohort was calculated first as wet weight and then converted into carbon and nitrogen content. The paper proposes a reflection on the Greek concept of epieikeia. The first systematic treatment of epieiekia is attributed to Aristotle (EN, V 14 and Rhet. I, 13). The Aristotelian definition was the starting point of the considerable attention epieikeia has enjoyed in later tradition. However, this attention has been almost exclusively limited to the philosophy of law or, to a lesser extent, to theology as well. This restriction has caused an excessive specialization of the word. La tesi és un estudi semàntic diacrònic dels cinquanta zoònims llatins més productius de significats figurats o metasèmies; alhora constitueix una anàlisi motivacional de la creació de lèxic nou en general, i zoonímic en particular. Es constata que els zoònims constitueixen segurament el camp semàntic de més capacitat per a un ús figurat metafòric o metonímic. Vengono individuate le molte educazioni cui il genere umano ha dato vita nel corso della sua evoluzione, dalla preistoria ai giorni nostri, tenendo conto delle coordinate spazio-temporali entro cui queste si sono concretizzate. This Lesson presents an empirical-historical inquiry about education as an universal human phenomenon. Many of the educations that humanity has realized during its evolution, from prehistory to today, are identified. These educational practices have been realized within specific geographic and historical coordinates.
