Development of fluorogenic probe-based PCR assays for the detection and quantification of bovine piroplasmids.

2009

This paper reports two new quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays, developed in an attempt to improve the detection of bovine piroplasmids. The first of these techniques is a duplex TaqMan assay for the simultaneous diagnosis of Babesia bovis and B. bigemina. This technique is ideal for use in South America where bovids harbour no theilerids. The second technique, which is suitable for the diagnosis of both babesiosis and theileriosis worldwide, involves fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) probes. In FRET assays, Babesia bovis, B. divergens, Babesia sp. (B. major or B. bigemina), Theileria annae and Theileria sp. were all identifiable based on the melting temperatures of their amplified f…

Solar PAR and UVR modify the community composition and photosynthetic activity of sea ice algae

2015

The effects of increased photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on species diversity, biomass and photosynthetic activity were studied in fast ice algal communities. The experimental set-up consisted of nine 1.44 m(2) squares with three treatments: untreated with natural snow cover (UNT), snow-free (PAR + UVR) and snow-free ice covered with a UV screen (PAR). The total algal biomass, dominated by diatoms and dinoflagellates, increased in all treatments during the experiment. However, the smaller biomass growth in the top 10-cm layer of the PAR + UVR treatment compared with the PAR treatment indicated the negative effect of UVR. Scrippsiella complex (mainly…

The first part of this note is dedicated to the life, the works and the bibliographical "status quaestionis" of Baudry of Bourgueil, an important medieval latin poet who lived between the XI and XII centuries. The second part, instead, focuses on the recent book of Francesca SIVO, Follia d’amore. La “fabu…

Digital epidemiology: assessment of measles infection through Google Trends mechanism in Italy.

2019

Introduction. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the temporal correlation between Google Trends and the data on measles infection arising from the conventional surveillance system, reported by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità's (ISS) bulletin. Moreover, this study is also aimed at forecasting the trends of the reported infectious diseases cases over time. Materials and Methods. The reported cases of measles were selected from January 2013 until October 2018. The data on Internet searches have been obtained from Google Trends; the research data referred to the first 48 weeks of year 2017 have been aggregated on a weekly basis. The search volume provided by Google Trends has a relat…

In-Operando Lithium-Ion Transport Tracking in an All-Solid-State Battery.

2022

An all-solid-state battery is a secondary battery that is charged and discharged by the transport of lithium ions between positive and negative electrodes. To fully realize the significant benefits of this battery technology, for example, higher energy densities, faster charging times, and safer operation, it is essential to understand how lithium ions are transported and distributed in the battery during operation. However, as the third lightest element, methods for quantitatively analyzing lithium during operation of an all-solid-state device are limited such that real-time tracking of lithium transport has not yet been demonstrated. Here, the authors report that the transport of lithium …

Distansescharella seguenzai Cipolla, 1921 (Bryozoa, Cheilostomata),nouvelles données morphologiques et écologiques tirées de spécimens fossiles (Mioc…

1989

The cribrimorph Distansescharella seguenzai Cipolla,,1921, described from the Pliocene of Sicily has been rediscovered in fossil deposits (Messinian of Western Algeria, and Lower Pliocene of Calabria, Southern Italy) and in Recent Mediterranean material (Straits of Gibraltar, Alboran Sea, Gulf of Tripoli). Its morphology is demonstrated by SEM study of living specimens. In spite of some differences with the type-species of Distansescharella D'Orbigny revealed by examination of its neotype, the generic status of D. seguenzai is confirmed. An ecological analysis of the Recent and fossil assemblages including D. seguenzai is made by considering the zoarial growth forms and the potential habita…

Persistence of the effect of birth size on dysglycaemia and type 2 diabetes in old age: AGES-Reykjavik Study

2012

We studied the effect of birth size on glucose and insulin metabolism among old non-diabetic individuals. We also explored the combined effect of birth size and midlife body mass index (BMI) on type 2 diabetes in old age. Our study comprised 1,682 Icelanders whose birth records included anthropometrical data. The same individuals had participated in the prospective population-based Reykjavik Study, where BMI was assessed at a mean age of 47 years, and in the AGES-Reykjavik Study during 2002 to 2006, where fasting glucose, insulin and HbA₁c were measured and homeostasis model assessment for the degree of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) calculated at a mean age of 75.5 years. Type 2 diabetes was…

Association between WHO cut-offs for childhood overweight and obesity and cardiometabolic risk

2012

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the association between cardiovascular risk and childhood overweight and obesity using the BMI cut-offs recommended by the WHO.DesignChildren were classified as normal weight, overweight and obese according to the WHO BMI-for-age reference. Blood pressure, lipids, glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and uric acid levels were compared across BMI groups. ANOVA and tests of linearity were used to assess overall mean differences across groups. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated for adverse plasma levels of biochemical variables.SettingPaediatric care centres.SubjectsChildren (n149) aged 8–18 years.ResultsAbout 37 %,…

Altered expression of nonclassical HLA class Ib antigens in human renal cell carcinoma and its association with impaired immune response

2003

Abstract An optimal antitumoral immune response requires the activation of both CD8 + and CD4 + T lymphocytes by the peptide antigen presentation via the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I and class II molecules, respectively. Downregulation or loss of HLA molecules has been found in human renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and provides a strategy of these tumors to evade T-cell mediated immunosurveillance. In addition, a tumor-specific upregulation of HLA-G has been recently described in RCC, which also leads to an impaired immune response. We here summarize the frequency of the constitutive and/or interferon-γ (IFN-γ) inducible expression of nonclassical HLA class Ib antigens in RCC cell lines…
