Summary High oxidative stress status (OSS) is known to be one of the most important factors determining cell injury and consequent organ damage in thalassaemic patients with secondary iron overload. Using an innovative hydroxylamine ‘radical probe’ capable of efficiently trapping majority of oxygen-radicals including superoxide we measured, by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, OSS in peripheral blood of 38 thalassaemic patients compared with sex-/age-matched healthy controls. Comparison of EPR response of alanine and Gd2O3-alanine dosimeters exposed to TRIGA Mainz reactor.

In this work we report some preliminary results regarding the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of alanine pellets and alanine pellets added with gadolinium used for dosimetry at the TRIGA research reactor in Mainz, Germany. Two set-ups were evaluated: irradiation inside PMMA phantom and irradiation inside boric acid phantom. We observed that the presence of Gd2O3 inside alanine pellets increases the EPR signal by a factor of 3.45 and 1.24 in case of PMMA and boric acid phantoms, respectively. Binary materials composed of the oxides SiO2, TiO2 and N-doped TiO2 and the Keggin heteropolyacid (PW12) were prepared and physicochemically characterized. They were used as catalysts and photocatalysts for the hydration of propene to 2-propanol. The characterization of the samples, particularly the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results and the acidity properties, were useful to explain the key role played by the PW12 in the composite materials in the thermal and photoassisted catalytic processes. Excess Electrons at Oxide Surfaces

Excess electrons profoundly affect the properties of oxide surfaces. The present review deals with excess charges on rutile and anatase. These much studied titania polymorphs open with strong prospects regarding (photo)catalysis and dye-sensitized solar cells. In the complex landscape of the mechanisms of electron trapping and electron transfer toward adsorbates, excess electrons open with flexible model systems which are the focus of an extensive research effort.

Abstract Titanium dioxide samples were prepared in the presence of different amounts of fluorine via hydrothermal method. It has been found that the presence of fluoride influenced the physico-chemical properties of TiO2 in various ways as polymorphic form stability, surface hydroxylation, generation of hydroxyl radicals under irradiation and formation of Ti3+ centers and oxygen vacancies. ESR and electrochemical studies of 2-acylpyridines and 6,6'-diacyl-2,2'-bipyridines.

Abstract The ESR spectra of radicals obtained by electrolytic reduction of 2-acylpyridines and 6,6′-diacyl-2,2′-bipyridines were measured in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and analyzed by quantum chemical calculations. The electrochemistry of these compounds was characterized using cyclic voltammetry, in DMSO solvent. The results showed a two step reduction mechanism, first wave was assigned to the generation of the correspondent free radical species, and the second wave was assigned to the dianion derivatives. A three-dimensional coordination polymer, [Cu(btix)(2)(BF(4))(2)](n) [btix = 1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene], with antiferromagnetic interactions occurring via the organic ligand, has been prepared and characterized. It has been shown to permit the exchange of anionic species in the crystalline network with modification of the magnetic properties. The selective annealing of point defects with different activation energies is studied, by performing sequences of thermal treatments on gamma irradiated silica samples in the temperature range 300-450 °C. Our experiments show that the dependence on time of the concentration of two irradiation induced point defects in silica, named ODC(II) (standing for oxygen deficient centre II) and the E(γ)(') centre, at a given temperature depends on the thermal history of the sample for both of the centres studied; moreover in the long time limit this concentration reaches an asymptotic value that depends on the treatment temperature alone. Interaction of metal ions with D-glucobenzothiazoline: isolation and characterization of the resultant products

Six different metal-ion complexes of D-glucobenzothiazoline were synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectral techniques. Formation of different types of species (ML and ML2) were observed with Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Zn2+ ions. Existence of an anomeric mixture in the case of the Cu2+ complex is identified from the EPR spectra, and the results were further supported by the simulated spectra. The structures were proposed based on different studies.

Role of paramagnetic polyconjugated clusters in lignin antioxidant activity(in vitro)

Using physico-chemical methods (EPR, SEC, Py-GC/MS and UV/VIS spectroscopy) and wet chemical analysis, the characteristics of 6 hardwood lignins in terms of functionality, molecular weight and composition of lignin substructures were determined and considered together with the results of DPPH•, ABTS•+ and O2•− antioxidant assays with the aim to understand the relationships governing antioxidant properties of lignin. The strong positive linear correlation between lignin antioxidant capacity in the three assays used and the extent of conjugation of paramagnetic polyconjugated clusters in lignin macromolecules was found.
