X-Ray Diffraction and Multifrequency EPR Study of Radiation-Induced Room Temperature Stable Radicals in Octacalcium Phosphate.
2020
Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) {Ca8H2(PO4)6×5H2O] has attracted increasing attention over the last decade as a transient intermediate to the biogenic apatite for bone engineering and in studies involving the processes of pathological calcification. In this work, OCP powders obtained by hydrolysis of dicalcium phosphate dehydrate were subjected to X- and γ-ray irradiation and studied by means of stationary and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance at 9, 36 and 94 GHz microwave frequencies. Several types of paramagnetic centers were observed in the investigated samples. Their spectroscopic parameters (components of the g and hyperfine tensors) were determined. Based on the extracted parameters,…
Solvation of a probe molecule by fluid supercooled water in a hydrogel at 200 K
2008
By combining electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on a nitroxide probe and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we demonstrate existence of liquid supercooled water in a silica hydrogel with high hydration level down to temperatures of at least 198 K. Besides the major fraction of liquid supercooled water, a minor fraction crystallizes at about 236 K during cooling and melts at 246 K during heating. The liquid domains are of sufficient size to solvate the nearly spherical paramagnetic probe molecule TEMPO with a diameter of about 6 angstrom. Analysis of EPR spectra provides the rotational correlation time of the probe that is further used to compare the viscosity of the su…
New Tetrahydro-1,2,4,5-Tetrazinan-3-Ones and Oxoverdazyl Free Radicals
2006
A series of tetrahydro-1,2,4,5-tetrazinan-3-ones have been prepared by the reaction of carbonic acid bis (1-methylhydrazide) with aromatic aldehydes. These were oxidised to oxoverdazyl free radicals and used immediately for ESR spectroscopy studies that indicate that the unpaired electron is delocalised over the verdazyl ring. The ESR spectra can be very well simulated considering hyperfine couplings with the four nitrogen atoms of the verdazyl ring and the six hydrogen atoms of the two methyl groups bonded to it.
Re-investigation of the conformational interconversion of the 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene cation radical by EPR, ENDOR and TRIPLE spectroscopy
1985
The conformational interconversion of the 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene cation radical has been re-examined by EPR, ENDOR and TRIPLE spectroscopy, and the Arrhenius plot is presented for a wider temperature range than that used earlier. The EPR spectra were measured from 143 to 369 K and the ENDOR spectra from 143 to 263 K. The thermodynamic constants of the conformational interconversion of the cation radical were determined on the basis of the temperature-dependent spectra. The high-resolution spectra clearly show that there are two overlapping spectra at low temperature, and this is confirmed by simulation.
Malonato complexes of oxidovanadium(IV): Synthesis, structural characterization and exploration of their insulin mimetic properties
2011
Abstract Several bis-malonatooxidovanadium(IV) complexes of the general type [M2(H2O)n][VO(mal)2(H2O)] (where M = Li(1), Na(2), K(3), Cs(4) and NH4(5); n = 3.5, 1, 3, 1 and 1, respectively) were isolated in good yield and high purity. These complexes were fully characterized by various physicochemical techniques (elemental analysis, UV–Vis, IR, EPR, CV, etc.) complexes 1, 2 and 3 were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. In vivo antidiabetic properties of bis-malonato complexes 1, 2, 3 and 5 have been studied using Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Significant lowering of blood sugar level has been noticed. At the same time these complexes were found…
Experimental evidence of E’_gamma centers generation from oxygen vacancies in a-SiO2
2007
Abstract We report on the thermal treatment effects in a γ-ray irradiated oxygen deficient amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) containing Al impurities. We observed that by thermal treatments the intensity of the 7.6 eV optical absorption band, associated to an oxygen deficient center, and the EPR signal amplitude of irradiation induced [AlO4]0 centers gradually decrease. During these thermal treatments, the E γ ′ centers concentration is found to increase in a correlated way to the decrease of the 7.6 eV absorption amplitude. These results are interpreted assuming an hole-transfer process from the [AlO4]0 centers to the diamagnetic oxygen vacancies, resulting in the generation of E γ ′ cent…
Analysis of Mn2+EPR spectral shapes for studies of the oxyfluoride glass ceramics
2011
We investigated the EPR superhyperfine structure of the Mn 2+ ion in the disordered BaF2 crystalline media which tends to crystallize in the oxyfluoride glass-ceramics material. Obtained EPR spectra reveal explicit shf structure due to Mn 2+ ion building into the BaF2 lattice showing its usefulness as a probe in orientationally disordered and amorphous structures. Two types with explicit shf structure of Mn 2+ ion characteristic EPR spectra were obtained in BaF2 powder samples characteristic with broad (type 1) and narrow (type 2) hyperfine structure lines. Spectra of the ZnF2-BaF2 oxyfluoride glass-ceramics samples revealed explicit fine structure lines.
Evidences for the Formation of Chromium in the Unusual Oxidation State Cr(IV)
1999
Abstract Magnetic measurements on Tl x Cr 5 Se 8 (0≤ x ≤1) reveal that stoichiometric TlCr 5 Se 8 is a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with a Neel temperature T N of about 55 K. In contrast, samples with a reduced Tl content show highly unusual magnetic properties that are without precedent in the literature of magnetically coupled systems: upon lowering the temperature from 300 K the susceptibility reaches a maximum at about 125 K and then steeply drops to a value comparable to that obtained at room temperature. The height of this maximum increases first with decreasing Tl abundance reaching its largest value at a composition Tl 0.2 Cr 5 Se 8 and then decreases again for samples with x 3…
Experimental evidence for two different precursors of Eγ′ centers in silica
2004
Abstract Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements of concentration and line shape of E γ ′ centers induced by γ ray irradiation are presented for natural and synthetic commercial silica with different OH contents. Synthetic materials with OH content >200 ppm by weight show one line shape for all investigated doses. In contrast, the other materials show a different line shape at low irradiation doses. Differences are also observed in the concentration growth of the E γ ′ centers in synthetic wet materials and in the other materials. The results are interpreted as evidence of two E γ ′ centers distinguishable by their line shape and having different precursors.
Recombination processes in rare-earth doped MAl2O4(M = Ca, Sr) persistent phosphors investigated by optically-detected magnetic resonance
2007
Single crystalline MAl 2 O 4 (M = Ca and Sr) persistent phosphors, which are nominally pure or additionally doped with Eu and Nd or Dy, respectively, were investigated for their recombination luminescence (RL) and microwave-induced changes in the RL at low temperatures. The analysis of the optically-detected electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, recorded after ultraviolet excitation at 4.2 K, shows that intrinsic donor and acceptor centres are involved in the recombination process. Spectral dependent RL-EPR measurements on undoped CaAl 2 O 4 (CAO) and SrAl 2 O 4 (SAO) show that we deal with only one donor but at least two different acceptors. The g value of the donor is 1.99 in CAO…
