Limits of ultra-high bit rate RZ data transmissions in terrestrial optical fiber systems

2006

We numerically study the limits of the terrestrial optical fiber systems as a function of the bit rate. In particular, we compare for 160-, 320- and 640-Gbit/s the limits of single channel and WDM configurations.

40 GHz pulse source based on cross-phase modulation-induced focusing in normally dispersive optical fibers.

2016

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the design of a high-repetition rate source delivering well-separated optical pulses due to the nonlinear compression of a dual-frequency beat signal within a cavity-less normally dispersive fiber-based setup. This system is well described by a set of two coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for which the traditional normally dispersive defocusing regime is turned in a focusing temporal lens through a degenerated cross-phase modulation process (XPM). More precisely, the temporal compression of the initial beating is performed by the combined effects of normal dispersion and XPM-induced nonlinear phase shift provided by an intense beat signa…

Coherent and incoherent spectral broadening in a photonic crystal fiber.

2007

The coherence of the spectral broadening process is the key requisite for the application of supercontinua in frequency combs. We investigate the coherence of two subsequent supercontinuum pulses created in a photonic crystal fiber pumped by a femtosecond laser. We measure Young interference fringes from a Michelson-type interferometer at different wavelengths of the output spectrum and analyze their dependence on pump intensity and polarization. The visibility of these fringes is a direct measure of the coherence of the spectral broadening processes.

Generation and detection of optical rogue-wave-like fluctuations in fiber Raman amplifiers

2009

Rogue wave-like statistics is reported in a fiber Raman amplifier. The pump-signal noise transfer leads to the development of large peak-power fluctuations following a powerlaw probability distribution. Discrimination of the rarest events is demonstrated.

Polychromatic Cherenkov radiation and supercontinuum in tapered optical fibers

2012

We numerically demonstrate that bright solitons in tapered optical fibers can emit polychromatic Cherenkov radiation providing they remain spectrally close to the zero dispersion wavelength during propagation along the fiber. The prime role in this phenomenon is played by the soliton self-frequency shift driving efficiency of the radiation and tuning of its frequency. Depending on tapering and input pulse power, the radiation is emitted either as a train of pulses at different frequencies or as a single temporally broad and strongly chirped pulse.

The nonlinear optical loop mirror: soliton and noise-like pulse emission in a figure-eight fiber laser

2021

In this article, a symmetrical nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) exhibiting a polarization-dependent transmission is evaluated to generate optical pulse emission in a figure-eight fiber laser in the soliton and noise-like pulse (NLP) regimes. The NOLM structure relies on a 50:50 fiber coupler, a loop with highly twisted single-mode optical fiber and a quarter-wave retarder (QWR) to break the polarization asymmetry. The pulse operation regime is determined by properly adjusting the NOLM low-power transmission, which is easily realized by the rotation of the QWR angle. Soliton pulses of 1.48 ps pulse duration and peak power of 18 W were observed with a peak to peak separation of 1.25 µs, c…

Multi-peak-spectra generation with Cherenkov radiation in a non-uniform single mode fiber

2014

We propose, by means of numerical simulations, a simple method to design a non-uniform standard single mode fiber to generate spectral broadening in the form of "ad-hoc" chosen peaks from dispersive waves. The controlled multi-peak generation is possible by an on/off switch of Cherenkov radiation, achieved by tailoring the fiber dispersion when decreasing the cladding diameter by segments. The interplay between the fiber dispersion and the soliton self-frequency shift results in discrete peaks of efficiently emitted Cherenkov radiation from low order solitons, despite the small amount of energy contained in a pulse. These spectra are useful for applications that demand low power bell-shaped…

Diffractive optics for high-resolution low-coherence digital holography

2010

We study the properties of the recording of off-axis holograms when a 10 fs pulsed laser is used as illumination source. A proper optical design involving one diffractive lens outside a Michelson interferometer enables the recording of full-field off-axis holograms with high resolution and optical sectioning. We demonstrate our approach with some experimental results that show optical sectioning with a maximum resolution of 3.5 µm. We note that the axial resolution of the technique is reduced up to 9 µm when the object beam travels through a few millimeters of glass due to the pulse broadening along dispersive media.
