Optical Bloch-mode-induced quasi phase matching of quadratic interactions in one-dimensional photonic crystals

We examine in detail the quasi-phase-matching process obtained as a stationary modulation of the fundamental field at the band edge of a finite one-dimensional photonic crystal. The treatment is carried out in terms of the structure Bloch waves and fully explains the behavior of second-harmonic generation in the grating. An integrated microstructured AlGaAs mesa waveguide is proposed that gives efficient second-harmonic and difference-frequency generation in virtue of the combined presence of a periodic modulation of the fundamental-field amplitude and of the photonic bandgap edge.
Silicon photomultiplier properties at cryogenic temperatures

Abstract The properties of different types of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) were studied at cryogenic temperatures. In liquid nitrogen at 77 K, problems with quenching in Hamamatsu SiPMs and with the protective epoxy layer, covering Zecotek SiPMs, were observed. Tests with one Zecotek SiPM were successful after removal of the epoxy layer. In liquid helium at 4 K, fast signals with pulse lengths shorter than 50 ns were observed, the dark count rate was below 10 Hz and no after-pulses were detected. FARCOS: a versatile and modular Femtoscopy Array for Correlations and Spectroscopy

In the framework of multi-fragmentation experiments the evolution towards two- (or more) particle correlations with stable and radioactive beams calls for the development of a novel detection system featuring high angular and energy resolution and able to reconstruct the particles momentum at high precision. The proposed detection system, named FARCOS (Femtoscopy ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) will be beneficial for different physical cases. Light propagation in triple-film hetero-opals

Spectra of transmitted and forward scattered light of single opal films and triple-film hetero-opals have been compared. The presence of an intermediate film in hetero-opal results in an anomalous increase of the scattered light intensity and in the change of the mainly ballistic light propagation regime to the mainly diffusive one in the frequency range of the photonic bandgap defect state.
Nonlinear plasmonic amplification via dissipative soliton-plasmon resonances

In this contribution we introduce a new strategy for the compensation of plasmonic losses based on a recently proposed nonlinear mechanism: the resonant interaction between surface plasmon polaritons and spatial solitons propagating in parallel along a metal/dielectric/Kerr structure. This mechanism naturally leads to the generation of a quasi-particle excitation, the so-called soliplasmon resonance. We analyze the role played by the effective nonlinear coupling inherent to this system and how this can be used to provide a new mechanism of quasi-resonant nonlinear excitation of surface plasmon polaritons. Effective bias and potentials in steady-state quantum transport: A NEGF reverse-engineering study

Using non-equilibrium Green’s functions combined with many-body perturbation theory, we have calculated steady-state densities and currents through short interacting chains subject to a finite electric bias. By using a steady-state reverse-engineering procedure, the effective potential and bias which reproduce such densities and currents in a non-interacting system have been determined. The role of the effective bias is characterised with the aid of the so-called exchange-correlation bias, recently introduced in a steady-state density-functionaltheory formulation for partitioned systems. Next generation of the Albira small animal PET based on high density SiPM arrays

A new design of the small animal PET Albira system which detectors are based on arrays of SiPMs and monolithic LYSO scintillator is presented here. The system is made out of 3 rings of 8 detectors each, resulting on an axial and transaxial FOVs of 148 and 80 mm, respectively. The scanner is thermally stabilized using air-cooling. Working temperatures around 22–25°C are reached with individual detector variations around 0.2°C minimizing dark count rates and gain drifts. Extremely low frequency band station for natural electromagnetic noise measurement

A new permanent ELF measurement station has been deployed in Sierra Nevada, Spain. It is composed of two magnetometers, oriented NS and EW, respectively. At 10 Hz, their sensitivity is 19 μV/pT and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 28 dB for a time-varying signal of 1 pT, the expected field amplitude in Sierra Nevada. The station operates for frequencies below 24 Hz. The magnetometers, together with their corresponding electronics, have been specifically designed to achieve such an SNR for small signals.
